Technically traditional waterspouts are NOT formed by isolated supercell mesocyclones whereas this one clearly is. These are significantly more dangerous than the vast majority of non-supercell mesocyclone waterspouts. Can you call them both waterspouts? Sure, but technically this is a tornado on water rather than a traditional waterspout because they are two entirely separate weather phenomena. This version will cause significant damage and could be deadly whereas most waterspouts are relatively harmless. Much like the difference between land spouts and tornadoes. If you see a land spout or dust devil in the field by your house it’s likely not a big deal, but if you see a tornado by your house? Better head to the basement. So in short, a waterspout on the land is a land spout, just as a tornado on the water is still a tornado. Hope this helps.
@@dco1019 yes, very much so. I grew up on Lake Erie and I’ve witnessed multiple waterspouts. One formed about 100 yards away from a boat I was on during a partly cloudy day. I was initially pretty freaked out but the captain of the boat wasn’t bothered in the least so that sort of put me at ease and we all watched it swirl until it dissipated. If I were on the water and saw this type of storm blow in I’d be on shore long before it dropped that monster funnel.

50 years or so ago I used to go to the beach at sunrise and occasionally there would be a waterspout WAY FAR out on the horizon where they were no danger to anyone they were beautiful as they appeared to "dance" this is WAY TOO CLOSE. Always been a storm chaser as a kid,, Which led me to become a beach treasure hunter, on the treasure coast, So I've seen many water spouts over the years, One in particular,, in 94, Crossed US1, And went through a mobile home park, killing 2 people, This one on your footage, is about the biggest 1 I've seen, Not your typical thin rope, Water spout, Almost looks like a Midwestern wedge type tornado, They usually don't last very long, But they can definitely do some damage, in a short period of time, great footage,, Considering, we're not in Kansas anymore.
I have a picture from navarre beach, about 20-30 miles west of here, where i got 3 separate waterspouts in frame. iirc there were 4 at the same time but too spread out to get them all in one pic

Years ago while fishing off the Keys we saw a spout like that. While we watched it spawned two 'sisters', smaller spouts which rotated around the large one. Amazing sight. Later, partying on Duval the bar emptied out and we watched another spout touch down in the harbor. Crazy weather that year!

Years ago while fishing off the Keys we saw a spout like that. While we watched it spawned two 'sisters', smaller spouts which rotated around the large one. Amazing sight. Later, partying on Duval the bar emptied out and we watched another spout touch down in the harbor. Crazy weather that year!
I just got back from Destin last week. I love that place. I've been going there for the last twenty years.
Destin is the prettiest beach in Florida, the sand is so white and shiny and the water is so clear and light blue

Lol yeah because once it touches land, it's a tornado. And those are nothing to fuck with. This one would easily be an EF3 tornado if it were on land instead of water.
@@UseADamnCoasterNot always. Fair weather waterspouts are formed by different mechanics and they dissipate quickly when hitting land and are usually harmless. This one was definitely a tornado over water though, between what resembles a drillbit on the water and the intimidatingly dark, electrically excited mesocyclonic cumulonimbus above it.

Wow that is so cool. When I was in grade school living in Florida we were at the beach near Ft. Lauderdale one time and there was a waterspout out in the ocean. So cool.
