It’s about a soldier’s journey from being called to war , seeing the best and worst in man , then trying to make it back home without getting “blown away”
Still trying to hold onto who they were before the war “trying to hold onto a trace of what it was back then”
and facing all the things that soldiers do on return like PTSD.
Even the “you and I had our sites set on something hope this doesn’t mean our days are numbered “ (looking through the sites in your gun and thinking if your next to be shot)
It’s just a freakin amazingly written song and John absolutely does it justice.
But like he mentioned with everything going on in the world today I believe he sang it as a uniting song for all of us that are over the chaos and madness to pull us together, give hope and teach us to help each other.
That’s my take on why he chose to sing this .
    Loved the reaction! 💛✨

One of his best all time vocal performances no doubt. Especially that third verse, he’s high! I watched your first reaction to this, you on your own. I knew straight away how deeply personal it was. I lived with an Australian Vietnam Vet Father, who was shunned by his biological family when he returned soul wounded and misunderstood. He was to sleep in separate quarters from his family, called for dinner, but otherwise ignored by them, as a human being. As his new Aboriginal foster daughter, from age 6 to 17, he and I shared many stories, me listening with my heart open, his with a whispered tone. He endured and witnessed many human cruelties beyond description, but I insisted over the years that I wanted to know. I insisted, begged and sat quietly until he could feel safe to say, what he as a young 19 year old had survived. Im forever in debt to him for his trust, love and fearlessness to share. His family did not know, nor did they really try. They were frightened of him. Im glad when they fostered me, it was him my Father that I was so drawn to as a child and him to me. Each of us out of place and seeking a place of healing. We found each other. I loved him as my Father as he loved me as his daughter. Too many Vets, too many many Vets are so misunderstood, mistreated, disrespected. I also know it is hard. The wounds, the behavour, But listen, be patient be there. Enough of throwing people away after the wounds of their duty is done. When the War is Over...I was there for one man. How many more of us can be there from now on. I now work as a Mental Health professional, specialising in trauma. My foster Father who died many years ago now, Im 55, showed me this truth. This song reminds me of him. I miss him. I wish his life coming home was better. Im glad it was me. They need someone, just someone. To listen, to love, to understand. Thats a good start.

@@reactiontalk Completely agree. Enough of sending people to War against each other. Its a killing field of human on human. We should by now have capacity to pursue diplomatic dialogue and other non violent activities instead of War. Unfortunately, where bloodshed becomes a profit...well diplomacy seems to take a back seat. I will say it for you. The humane costs will never be redeemed and its not glorious at all. We are lesser for it. We maim entire generations because of this path.

    • @reactiontalk

@@charki40 This is how the upper Elites have the rest of the world do their dirty work for them, while convincing the people it is "Good" when we know it is nothing but Bad. I think the people have to start saying no and accepting the consequences for doing so, if the people are more convicted and can stand the ground of morality, then they could never use another human to fight their global wars. They need non thinking and immoral people to participate in their insanity otherwise it doesn't work. Those who worship money as a God, will perform the most immoral acts and behaviors to obtain it. The illusion that money can set you free and not a moral compass runs rampant in all societies. Those who are actually rich have little money and an abundance of knowledge.
The ultimate problem is mind control. How do you get a whole nation to hate another nation? By driving into the psyche on a daily basis? Yes, it is obvious how easily the majority of people are convinced to hate another people because they are told to do so, it starts there. Now you have big corporations taking the sides of the same Elites that care nothing for people, only what they can use them for, or what they can get out of them. I would call it Global Mind Control with very few who are even aware of it. This is just another strategy they use to feed the cycle of death while breaking the human spirit for generations. All the while the people continue to support, praise, justify, and agree with those who care nothing for us, only to allow us to destroy each other by their own rhetoric based in false realities or poisoned worldviews. My message to everyone: TAKE BACK YOUR MIND.

The lead up to the song is why John is such a consumate performer. I have seen a lot of Australian and international bands over the years and his personal engagement/connection with his audience is second to none. He manages to make a 20,000+ arena feel like it's shrunk into the size a pergola filled with a few close friends in the back yard listening to a jam session.

John first started to sing this song with LRB.
It was used in the 1985 tv series Sword Of Honour played over the closing credits.
The series itself was based on a Vietnam vet who was trying to come back to life after a war everyone wanted to forget.
The closing credits were after he came back home to his family after staying away for years due to PTS.
He finally faced up after struggling to overcome everything.
    John's version was perfect.
    I love Cold Chisel.
Steve Prestwich (the songs writer) was the drummer in LRB by this time, hence the connection.
This is much later , in John's career but one of his finest vocals.
The song has multiple connotations, but covers the lot.
It's why Jimmy Barnes & Ian Moss can sing the heck out of it.
It's a great song but it seems to have been ideal for John to add his amazing vocals to. Time after time just sings it, but in this performance he wrings it out.
    Beautiful.

Yeah written by the late drummer Steve Prestwich originally from Cold Chisel then join the Little River Band straight after Cold Chisel called it quits for the first time in 1983 . Cold Chisel original version of When The War Is Over was released in 1982 as single peaking at 25 on the Australian charts.
3 years later Steve Prestwich in LRB with John Farnham on vocals start performing it on LRB’s Playing To Win Tour , and in early 1986 LRB recorded When The War Is Over it appears on their underrated No Reins album . Steve and John left LRB shortly after . With LRB in limbo in 1987 capital records released LRB’s When The War Is Over as a single cashing in on John solo success but sadly it was overshadowed by John’s solo success reuniting with You’re The Voice and Pressure Down dominating the charts LRB’s version failed to chart . John loved the song so much he re-recorded it again as a b side for he’s hit single Age Of Reason and this solo version is also added on Age Of Reason album CD as bonus track

    • @tonyb4115
      @tonyb4115 2 года назад +2

Good info and spot on. Capital were not kind to LRB at this time. Because the band were in a pre existent contract with them which dated back to before John joined. ie 5 record , deal or similar.
      It didn't help John financially
Which was why John did the movie soundtracks (Rads, Savage Streets etc) around this time.
It's a fascinating story, and all the more fitting that when he released Whispering Jack that his audience was waiting.
The rest is a folk story , the stuff of legends. Which he is!
