Kinda really annoying that RT just made him total bad guy , I think Ironwood had mind set similar to Kiritsugu Emiya hero that does thing for greater good , who aren’t against sacrificing one person for sake of humanity . It’s just like that train situation but more heavier which side you choose to save doomed people or save people that still have future .
9:55 the *MINUTE* you had your guard "down" and trusted others, you had Jacque in prison, Penny cleared of guilt, Wattz under arrest, your message and intentions spread to Mantle (which relatively relieved tensions) and the support of Robin and her people. Things ONLY got worse after YOU jumped the gun and made a lot, and I mean a LOT, of assumptions based on a single glass piece. Think, James, THINK! Why would Salem bother scaring you with a chess piece if she was already planning to do it through the jelly fish in Wattz's briefcase. Briefcase that YOU brought inside the office (side note: why didn't he bother to check what was inside the briefcase at Amity arena? For all he knew, inside could have been a bomb meant for either Amity or him, since Salem plan revolves around dividing humanity as much as possible. Take out either the tower that threatens to restore global communication or Atlas's high command and elite task force in one fell swoop. Either way, Salem would have to gain). If that chess piece really was part of it, why didn't she bother saying something like "Have you received my message?". The chess piece could easily be deduced as a red herring from a 3rd party (Cinder), that's currently not coordinating with Salem, meant to scare you. And you FELL for it Edit: grammar
Actually, both Salem and Cinder knew that he would still be paranoid about Salem and the threat that she would bring, and him and everyone else bringing the news about Salem and the threat she brings is exactly what Salem wanted: to cause panic to the populace, and panic can lead to lack of preparation, and Atlas and Mantle were not prepared to fight Salem and her forces even with strong military might. As for Cinder, because she knew how predictable Ironwood is, as well as knowing that, or at least had a hunch that, Salem is on her way to Atlas, she wanted to make Ironwood panic, to make him see that he and everyone else were compromised, which is actually true, and all Cinder needed to do was follow Winter to get to the Winter Maiden. And like Ironwood said, he let his guard down for one minute and Salem had an opening. And it didn't help that Ruby's group lied to him and acted on their own accord instead of at least follow his orders or even telling him the truth, even if it was for good reasons. In short, Salem and her inner circle wanted to make things worse for the heroes, and the worse has already happened. And now because of that, Ruby's group now understands what Ozpin had to go through and how trusting others is a huge risk, and have to face the consequences of all their actions.
for all intents and purposes, I AM THE SENATE... wait, sorry, council. wrong military dictator. I mean, the dude wasn't entirely wrong, to be fair, but learning to be an actual team player might've really helped avoid some of those more 'I'm practically a secondary evil villain at this point' type decisions. Just say in. Also, phenomenal job, yo. I'd say fairly solid glimpse inside the dude's head. That Anakin allusion at the end really did drive home poor Ironwood's descent to the darkside pretty dang well
Being less of a team player probably would have been more helpful for him. Dude's main problem was he kept trusting people who ended up betraying him. Oz keeping the nature of the threat Salem represented a secret. RWBY going behind his back to reveal secrets to his opposition. Watts doing exactly what anyone sane would have seen coming when he was asked to hack Penny. James is really just way too trusting a guy for his own good.
5:00 and now, sir, you're backing yourself even more into a corner. Once you get up there, what then? Food and water aside, how will you rebuilt your forces you've already lost. I doubt the city itself as anymore natural resources left after spending centuries floating above the clouds, and even assuming there are some left, they will be extremely limited at best. How will you replace the ships you've already lost, the ammo and weapons you've already spend, the people who have already died? If you have to retreat, then retreat damn it, but up is the absolute worst direction to go
All very true but the critic in me demands I nitpick. The city had only been floating since the end of the great war about 80'ish years ago. Your still right about there not being any resources to mine I just felt I had to say it.
6:15 and who are these people you "can" save, James? Are you sacrifing Mantle to save the rest of the world? Or are you sacrificing Mantle to save Atlas? And once Mantle is gone, who will you sacrifice next? Beacon? Haven? Menajerie? How much of the rest of the must be sacrificed before you decide the costs outweigh the benefits. Because, with all due respect, *sir* , for all your talk about saving the whole world, you sure do a lot to prioritize Atlas before everyone
You mean the part of the city with the highest population, where we've been evacuating Mantle's population to for days, and which is actually possible to move out of the way of the fuckoff huge army of Grimm and the immortal witch queen coming to slaughter us all and take the cosmic keystones that will let her destroy the world? The part of the city that, if it falls, will literally crush Mantle underneath it, killing everyone there? The part of the city that, with the relics and maidens on it, will be what Salem will prioritize chasing down, giving Mantle a chance at survival, slim though it may be? I get that the writers were going for him being unreasonable and cowardly here, but they did a terrible job of it, since the actual situation presented, James is being ridiculously reasonable.
@@YouthRightsRadical leaving all the moralizing aside, he's pushing himself into a corner. Atlas currently is surrounded by a massive grimm force, and Ironwood's plan is to launch that sucker way high into the atmosphere using the staff, with the assumption that no grimm force could ever reach him that high. BIG if on his part, as we've seen Salem and the grimm surpass his expectations twice now. Even assuming his plan works, what's his next move? Replenish his forces by conscripting more troops and manufacturing more weapons and ships? With what resources? Atlas the flying piece of land has most likely been stripped of all useful minerals, metals and dust already; and even if Salem can't reach him (again, IF), she can just blockade the surface and shoot down any force trying to take a dive for more resources or call out for help. Salem can literally make more of her forces and modify them as she pleases Wait Salem out in a battle of attrition? Salem's forces don't need to sleep, eat or drink. They are tireless and they can wait for as long as they have to. Ironwood can't. Yeah Atlas conveniently has farmable land and coursing water (still wrapping my head around that one), but with the influx of refugees and lack of imports, they'll have to dig into their reserves, and those aren't going to last forever, even with rationalizing them. Not to mention some of the fields have been damaged during the grimm attack. Plus, something often overlooked in media is that, at higher altitudes, the air pressure increases, so it becomes more difficult to breathe, and the temperature decreases, meaning whatever proper conditions he had for those patches of grains are gone now. With all that in mind, sooner rather than later, Ironwood is gonna run out of food reserves, people will start to panic and become unruly, and he'll start taking more.....drastic measures Launch a counterattack at Salem's forces and defeat her conventionally? If he was capable of that in the first place, he wouldn't have resorted to lifting Atlas way into the atmosphere to begin with Go back to the original plan of restoring global communications and call for help from the other nations? Arguably the best option he has left in the corner that he has driven himself into, it's still a longshot. Vale is still rebuilding from the fall of Beacon, Mistral had their elite hunters and headmaster systematically stamped out (not to mention the bad blood between the two nations) and Vacuo is too far away, is a desert country with barely enough resources for itself as it is and doesn't care. Plus, Atlas has pretty much burned all the metaphorical bridges and goodwill it had with the other nations because of the whole dust embargo, so I don't see them helping out regardless In conclusion, there is nothing beneficial about Ironwood's plan in terms of logistics and at best he's only buying for himself a little more time
@@floricel_112 You say buying time like that's a bad thing. Dying now and dying a few years from now have a very significant difference. As to the next step, restoring global communications, warning everyone about the Grim, and evacuating the population from Atlas to save havens before dropping the city on top of Salem seems like a good starting point. What he needed was time to take the pressure off. A workable plan now is better than a perfect plan that comes too late. His plan would buy time for that better plan to materialize. Maybe enough time for Oz to tell him the staff does things other than make stuff float so he could use it to do more than make Atlas float better.
It's a cell phone equivalent, and established as a really commonplace piece of technology in Remnant. That the ruler of a nation under martial law can deny declared enemies access to his communication infrastructure isn't a catch and it shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone.
10:15 you didn't listen either, James. You brought your fleet then, and it got hacked. So did your mechanical forces. You share as much of the blame for Beacon as Ozpin did
@@YouthRightsRadical no, Ozpin told him not to bring his whole fleet because such a massive security force for just a sporting event will stress the people out. Ironwood insisted on bringing it in, saying that, when they look at his fleet, people feel safe instead, knowing they are protected
@@floricel_112 And it wasn't people being stressed out by the fleet that was the problem. You recall that right? How there was a massive terrorist attack and even Ozpin told Ironwood to use his fleet to save people?
@@Cptsuccess RWBY and co had no definitive plan, but that didn’t mean they weren’t willing to be a part of whatever could be scraped together. Fighting as long as they can is a plan. Partnering with the citizens of Mantle to buy time for a more complete evacuation or even somehow holding the line is a plan. Bring a genius like Pietro into the fold and you might come up with the same escape plan that RWBY and co eventually settled on, but with the full cooperation of the Atlas military this could have been done more effectively and evacuated more critical resources with the populace. There is a lot of risk in this kind of venture, particularly given the unknowns (like not knowing exactly how strong the force that is coming will be). But there is an immense amount of risk to simply running, and a very clear cost that shouldn’t be considered acceptable.
3:55 I see the general wants to go full Columbia on the city of Atlas EDIT: you know, this might just be me not fully familiar with the lore, but this DOES raise the question: how big is Remnant exactly and the countries that form it? Are they full blown continental sized countries, average size with a few cities and a capital in each country, or the size of a slightly bigger city-state with a bit of territory each so hey can have 2-3 cities? Cause the city and country of Atlas, minus the land down below used for mining, seem to be the same thing, Mantle seems to be a different entity from Atlas and that base Atlas had in Mistral seems more like a base of operation that part of the territory itself. How spread out and numerous is the human population exactly?
I’m under the impression that the kingdoms are more like city states than full blown nations. It doesn’t seem that there is more than one or two major cities per kingdom, and only in areas that are geographically optimal for defense. Attempts at expansion have also had limited success, for example Mountain Glenn. Edit: although while the vast majority of the populations are concentrated in the capital cities it looks like there are plenty of small rural outposts/villages in a broader territory that probably don’t attract the same quantity of Grimm as a proper city would.

Magnus.... I MEAN ...... Ironwood did nothing wrong
And you FELL for it
Edit: grammar
YES all the Yes!!!!!!
And like the Star Wars Line

for all intents and purposes, I AM THE SENATE... wait, sorry, council. wrong military dictator.
That Anakin allusion at the end really did drive home poor Ironwood's descent to the darkside pretty dang well
Yep. I definitely love the Darth Vader line.
If you have to retreat, then retreat damn it, but up is the absolute worst direction to go
they would have to collect dust and other resources by going down
Annnd he did not know how the staff works
All very true but the critic in me demands I nitpick. The city had only been floating since the end of the great war about 80'ish years ago. Your still right about there not being any resources to mine I just felt I had to say it.
@@lookinforgoodshowsz like I said in a previous comment, I'm not fully versed in the lore. So thank you for the correction
@@floricel_112 Thank you and I hope I didn't come across as too pushy or combative. Tone on the internet can be very difficult to interpret.
Is it just me, or do James and his thoughts voice actor (At some points) sound like Darth Vader?
Yes, yes it was. And I immediately understood it.
6:08 not. yet.
*slow clap* this. This right here. Thank you!
Salem can literally make more of her forces and modify them as she pleases
Wait Salem out in a battle of attrition? With all that in mind, sooner rather than later, Ironwood is gonna run out of food reserves, people will start to panic and become unruly, and he'll start taking more.....drastic measures
Launch a counterattack at Salem's forces and defeat her conventionally? If he was capable of that in the first place, he wouldn't have resorted to lifting Atlas way into the atmosphere to begin with
Go back to the original plan of restoring global communications and call for help from the other nations? Arguably the best option he has left in the corner that he has driven himself into, it's still a longshot. Vale is still rebuilding from the fall of Beacon, Mistral had their elite hunters and headmaster systematically stamped out (not to mention the bad blood between the two nations) and Vacuo is too far away, is a desert country with barely enough resources for itself as it is and doesn't care. Plus, Atlas has pretty much burned all the metaphorical bridges and goodwill it had with the other nations because of the whole dust embargo, so I don't see them helping out regardless
In conclusion, there is nothing beneficial about Ironwood's plan in terms of logistics and at best he's only buying for himself a little more time
@@floricel_112 You say buying time like that's a bad thing.
I knew there was a catch with the scrolls! No one just gives away the most advanced means of communication without a catch!

You share as much of the blame for Beacon as Ozpin did
To be fair what reinforcing did Ozpin do? At least Ironwood tried to do something about the lack of security.
@@Cptsuccess yeah it did feel like Ozpin was an airhead now that we learn he had no plan at all
Because Ozpin warned him about his tech getting hacked... Sure...
8:10 you know, just because they are children, doesn't necessarily mean the adults have any better ideas
What makes you think that team RWBY has a better plan?
@@Cptsuccess no definitive plan for victory is not necessarily worse than a plan to abandon the civilian population to a Grimm fate.
@@falcore91 How?!? In what way does not having a plan be better than having a plan that actually has a chance of succeeding.
@@falcore91 The cost is the same on both sides.

3:55 I see the general wants to go full Columbia on the city of Atlas
EDIT: you know, this might just be me not fully familiar with the lore, but this DOES raise the question: how big is Remnant exactly and the countries that form it?

To be fair James had a point. Team RWBY ruined everything
Salem and co ruined everything. In the face of this RWBY and co had to make some hard calls, just like Ironwood did. For RWBY and co to have gone along with Ironwood at this point would have been to abandon their ultimate mission, to renounce the Promise that makes them worthy of being called huntsmen/huntresses.
