Hi, first up, thanks for the videos on the yaesu ft-857d. I’ve just stumbled across your videos in search as I’m in the market for my first amateur radio (waiting results from ACMA). My assessor mentioned this unit for the price, features, quality and versatility of using it both home/mobile, that’s contained in just one package. Would you concur with the above? Also looking at Andrews, as they seem to be the only place I can find them in AU, apparently Strictly Ham had them, but but no longer listed. Would you recommend Andrews? Cheers.
One thing. I have watched at least a dozen videos on the 857 but NONE of the explain how to POWER the radio. Its like they magically just press a button and the radio powers on. I would be interested in what power supply work with it. What models what connectors e.t.c
Hello, Thanks for this excellent video. I want to ask you how this radio performs with cooling? Does it get hot, what cooling system it uses? How about using it for contest (12/24hrs) ? 73!
The radio has an internal fan and it typically kicks in when transmitting to help keep it cool. With DXing it seems to perform fine, but I don't have it sealed away I where air can't get to it. I don't do heavy DXing (contesting etc.), but I know people who do and they haven't said anything about overheating.
EXCELLENT! I was putting my (fabulous) FT857D away for a time, and couldn't remember where everything went in the box. ☺
Thanks. I'm pretty much decided on the FT-857D myself.
Got one, you can't go wrong. A great radio
Congrats! Hope you enjoyed it...

Can't believe this has been discontinued. Which radio would you buy today to replace your FT-857D?
991A is the only replacement, it has an inbuilt antenna tuner and a larger display, price is large too.
