To make a long story short, when the Vietnamies invaded Cambodia in 1979, and routed the Khmer Rouge armies, it had Vietnam and the Soviet Union as its main allies.Because during socialist times the Russian/Soviet Residents of Phnom Penh used to shop here, hence it became colloquially known as Russian market from 1979 - 1991.
