  • Officials in Rio de Janeiro hoped hosting the 2016 Olympics would help make it a first-class city. Instead, many buildings and stadiums made for the games have gone unused since the event ended.

Los Angeles had a way different outcome in 1984. The whole thing was profitable. The same model will be used for 2028. Don't build venues that will only be used for a few weeks and then when it's all over run away. Refurbish facilities that already exist.

Some quick research and I see Atlanta ended up with about $20 million in profit. Los Angeles was about $232 million, which is probably about a billion dollars in today's dollars. While cashing in isn't an Olympic goal (although successful athletes do) it's good to know cities do not have to be left with a pile a debt and useless/decaying facilities once the games are over.

I agree that the money invested in the event in Brazil should be better used with social policies and infrastructure, but know that the Maracanã stadium shown in the video is not the same abandoned stadium they are claiming in this article. In fact, there was poor management of the structures in the first year after the Olympics, but the spaces have been used as planned since 2018. The Maracanã Stadium in Brazil is the largest and most functional stadium in use since its construction in 1950 until today. I don't know where you got that information. It host the most football matches in Brazil and the Copa America. and the landfill has been a construction site for the future Rio F1 circuit since 2018. The Olympic park hosts major events such as rock in Rio and lollapalooza every year, 700 thousand people each day during the 7 days of the event only at rock in rio . It is far from being abandoned as stated in this article.

The same people visit each city, paying off crooked piliticians, so they can steal from that countries taxpayers. Like a pimp using a prostitute, they move onto the next city when they have extracted all of the cash they can. The taxpayers are then saddled with mostly underutilized, high maintenanance facilities that are of little use to the local taxpayers. I never used to think this way, but the proof is in the disasters at almost every host city.

Whenever an Olympics is hosted in a third world country, the government builds all of these buildings with people's money. The workers that build these buildings barely make any money (there are no labour unions in third world countries) and may even work in terrible conditions (people die building them). The Olympics brings in a lot of tourism, which means a lot of revenue, but this steady flow of revenue does not last. After the Olympics is over, most of these buildings are not maintained and are not used ever again. Did I mention that all of the revenue goes back to the corrupt government instead of the people? People that are mostly living in poverty? In Rio, they had to build a structure on a road that exits from the airport because right next to it, there are plenty of people living in shacks. Instead of knocking them all down and providing the people with a decent home, they build a fence because they are ashamed. Oh and they want people to come again, which they won't. This goes for the World Cup, the Olympics and every event like this. *We must bring an end to these atrocities once and for all.*

Im from Czech Republic. The capital Prague was about to candidate for future Olympics but there was a crisis occurt in 2008 so Prague decided to cancel the application. I think the crisis was a good thing in that case. Because now the Prague has just one abandoned subway station that was built near the empty area where some stadiums were planned to be built. Luckily they stopped it in time :D

I am a Canadian and I am very proud of how the Vancouver Games of 2010 materialized. All the facilities that were built are all in use every year. Lots of the facilities that were used were preexisting and were just upgraded for the Olympics. We never spent 10's of billions of dollars for a one time use facility. I think that out of the last 20 years of olympic games Vancouver is the only one being used every year. We also have world class facilities in Edmonton from the 1988 games where all athletes from around the world come to train. The world should learn from us.

Who gives a shit if we're unimportant. I don't.
On a personal note, I'm not too sure you're loved in any way, shape, or form either, considering the fact that you have to bash another country that you probably have never went to. I would encourage you to not comment any further. You've already make yourself look like a wanker, and are fooling around with a subject you have no business talking about.

They should just let the poor live there, have then take care of everything, in exchange for taking turns caring for the grounds. If they don't work, they get kicked out. An hour or two a day would help from each family. That way the rest of the family can work during work hours.
