I loved my Atari 1040 STe. Carrier command, Millenium 2.2, Deuteros, Elite, Stunt car racer, Dungeon Master, Resolution 101. Such great games. It doesn't feel like the spirit of those games has ever been recaptured.
Fantastic games right there
Good choice of games!
Carrier Command, what a game !!
Dungeon Master is the best game until today and carrier command I liked I lot back in time. Don't know the other games, but I loved this 2 and Defender of the crown a lot. And dont forget the legendary game "Ballerburg"! =D
I had an Atari ST and later a Mega ST1 with an external 20MB ! hard disc drive. None of my friends had an hard disc at this time, but most of the games didnt work, cause they still tried to read floppy disc A ...
@@erich5489
Totally agree! An epic game! Even if you destroyed the enemy carrier early on (no mean feat in its-self) you had your work cut out capturing the remaining islands!
Dungeon Master.....so many people went out and bought Atari ST's, JUST to play that game.
Wasn't ported to Amiga for a longggg time.
I never had Atari ST, but nowadays, I discovered that Dungeon Master was game that was ahead of its time
And the thing that in Amiga needed 1mb to run was a stepback
Best game on the st was dungeon master still play it now my second favourite was and still is elite
I played Dungeon MaSTer all the time on my 520ST when I had it back in 1987. I got the DosBox version for the PC and STILL like to play it. One of the best games ever made!
Chaos strikes back too though!!
Atari apparently brings out a crypto currency or it is already on the market. Did anyone notice anything about it?
Best game ever Dungeon Master!
Από τα καλύτερα ✋
So much fun watching this, I forgot just how much me and my friends were into these games, what was probably only 2-3 years of my life from 12-14 yrs old seemed like a lifetime! I never had any money so used to look forward to the demos on the cover disk of ST Format each month, Gods, Magic Pockets, Llamatron, the clicking of the microswitches in the joystick, pulling fluff out the bottom of that clunky mouse, the loud bang and flash when I tried to add another half meg of memory and forgot to reconnect the power supply properly. The computer game shop in town was just like record shops were years later. I even did all my university work on it in the late 90s before eventually calling it a day.
Yeah. I remember the mouse fluff. Its funny how its the little things that stay in your mind. Cheers
And ST Action was good for the demo disks, it was always hard to actually get the games too…
Yep - got hold of a 1040 STE in 2018, and just this summer I spent an inordinate amount of time just getting a USB optical mouse to work properly with it. It's a lifesaver, and I can now play Carrier Command the way I always wanted to.
The mouse issues with mechanical mice in general, defined that era of computer use. Excellent system.
Dungeon Master was, is and always will be the Atari ST's best game. It's still the only game that made me get a system just so that I could play one specific game.
That is my favorite all time game. There was nothing like it at the time.
Same here once I saw it had to have it still works ok
I remember playing dungeon master on my STE in 1994 as i was playing it came on the radio Senna had died at Imola :(
@@jasont6287 Him and Roland Ratzenberger.
This list is undermined by the omission of 3 of the best 16 bit games ever made:
Another World
Star Wars
Stunt Car Racer
Some truly *awesome* games on there though. Especially:
Formula One Grand Prix
Sensible Soccer
Speedball 2
Turrican II
I so loved my Atari ST
Oh damn, so many hours played nearly all of these games!! Just sitting down with my son (6) and watching, making him see what i use to play!!
Xenon and Defender of the Crown are the ones that I loved from this list.
Stunt Car Racer, missing here, was an excellent game on the Atari. Of those in the vid Lemmings was a classic game but Dungeon Master was the most influential, Populus get's a shout out.
Nice list. I also played games like Raibow Island, Stunt Car Racer, Paradroid, Midwinter. Good memories.
And Nebulus
Thanks Samu 😊
Speedball 2 was probably the most playable and flawlessly animated ball game on the ST. It had those weird pinball effect and perfect control of the players.
and turricane 2 and IK plus;)
@@guts6157 heck no, not IK plus, it was unplayable. There was no strategy possible just a random chance of doing the right type of strike at the random right time unplayable.
Bought my son a 520 STe for his 7th
Christmas and upgraded it to 1040. He
Loved Turrican. I would sneak into his room when he was asleep and play Lemmings till stupid o'clock in the morning with headphones plugged into the tv.
There was a block falling game called Klaxtrix. Does anyone else remember that?
Where was "Barbaian"? That was a classic
i agree
Thanks for this nostalgia hit. I loved, Hunter, mercenary 3, civilisation, alone in the dark, Robin Hood, Carrier command to name a few
Thanks for your comment
Good selection that brings back a lot of great memories. Vroom was such an awesome racing game...
Thanks bro ☺️
I agree vroom was very playable, and difficult. Though it lacked a bit of a progression and goals.
Great sellection. Rainbow Islands, Goblins, Ivanhoe and International Karate +,...they were great titles too
Thanks maybe in my next video
IK+, had to be bought from the back of an ST mag via mail order lol
I saw adverts for the Atari ST with game bundles in Acorn computing mags (in the UK) and being awed by the graphics. It was a glimpse of the future! That was before we got an Acorn Archimedes in 1989.
It's a shame that the Atari ST versions of games like Lemmings don't have the full tracker music like they did on the Archimedes and Amiga.
i agree
There are amazing :
- Rodland
- North and South
- Arkanoïd
- Lemmings
- Cabal
And I can suggest :
- Midnight Resistance
- Troubadour
- Weird dream
- Krypton egg
- Internationnal Karate +
- MataHari
- Maniac Mansion
- Metrocross
- Jumping Jackson
maupiti island ;)
North & south omg I loved this game ahhh and dragon Ninja
Aw monkey island, that was proper class. Loved leisure suit Larry too.
I remember watching my dad play captian blood back when it first released. That game was a surreal experience.
3:36 I used to play a bad crack of Dragon Ninja that would crash in the same place every time. Pretty fun game really, but I don't remember the frame rate being so abysmally low...
Ivan Stewart's off road racer was a great game
Great list, thanks. That was a nice nostalgia trip!
Thanks Andrew 😊
You forgot Rainbow Islands. I played that one for hours.
My favourite games, in no particular order, Oids, Speedball 2, Xenon, Rick Dangerous 1 and 2 (So long as you have the cheat), Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, Wizball, Turrican 1 and 2, Nitro, Arkanoid 2, IK+, Loopz, Elite, Sim City, Lemmings.
Great list 👍
@@DimGaming I made the list before I watched the video, and most of my choices were in it. So great list by you too, we both forgot Stunt Car Racer though. That was brilliant!
Got My 540st right around same time my friends were getting their NES. Played Ikari Warriors & Super Sprint a LOT. Phantasie 1 & 2 spent years playing & never figured out how to beat. Being no strategy guides back then just tried everything possible.
Beating Ikari Warriors was Aweosme though!
I am from the uk and i sailed the other way and had an amiga500 in the 80s..i always was curious about the ST and they are quite difficult to find here in the uk.
Super sprint , ikari , turbo cup, gauntlet, toobin, thunderbirds, north and south, midwinter , buggy boy
Maybe in my next video 🤔
Oh, talking of Midwinder, how about Hunter! That was a difficult game to play, let alone win, but such a great early open world game.
Sundog was one of the best ST games ever made. At least they have Dungeon Master on here.
I was hoping someone had said Sundog!
Not sure Sundog is still played today. It's a "RTFM" game with very raw graphics. Dungeon Master is still played a lot :-)
Many great games on this list. I had a 1040STE . Remember i was playing IK+ very often.
I think oids was probably the biggest inspiration for my own game "lil blu", the Atari st era in general but that game in particular 😊
It just reminded me, how amazing Amiga's APU was.
Amiga was better but and Atari st was great computer
@@DimGaming I had Amiga and I think that Atari ST was still great machine to have at the time. Never understood that stupid war. Having an Amiga or Atari was so much better than having a console.
Awesome video. Some I'd never pick, but some I would... Love it!!
Exactly; what the hell is outrun doing in there? The ST version was utter pants! I'd go for overlander instead.... Hang on, there's no stunt car racer?! OR enchanted lands?... Where's no second prize? shuffle puck cafe? chaos? llamatron 2012? Is this just a random list of ST games? Where's obsession, hunter, lotus turbo challenge 2 (or 3.. or even 1!), harlequin, monster business, north and south, nitro, rainbow islands, pang, starball, venus the fly trap, switchblade II?... I could go on..
Actually xenon 2 isn't that great either but at least it had a sampled intro and the graphics looked nice.. Still, at least vroom is on there. [/rant] :D
.... Wait a minute... - Street fighter II??
@guythp Yeh it's a mixed bag for sure. Stunt Car Racer was huge back in the day, and deserves a place on any list. Not just for sheer awesomeness, but also since it's one of the ST games which run better than the Amiga version. Same for Star Wars.
I had Street Fighter 2 on the Atari ST and it was utter wank. Almost unplayable with one fire button...
Wizball!!!! Excellent.
thanks for the list! it really helps to choose from 4GB of images as I am new to ATARI!)
You welcome 🙂. 4gb of images ? Wow I don't know atari st have so big game database :)
The Sentinel published by Firebird. Fantastic strategy game with excellent graphics.
No Carrier Command?
Final fight ? Kick off ?
I played every single one of those games, its crazy.
My favourite games on Atari ST were Gauntlet, Chariots of Wrath(strange and difficult game), Wizball, Paradroid and the game in which the teddy bear collected donuts(I don't remember the name). Another ones I liked were RAC Rally and Rolling Ronny.
Good collection of games there. Other greats worth mentioning are Mercenary II, Frontier, Zool, Return of the Jedi, Rainbow Islands.. I also enjoyed on of the last games ever made for the ST, Pick n Pile. I still own boxed originals of some of these games, a working 1040 STfm, and a 520 ST.
Storm Master, Transarctica, Hunter, Midwinter, Maupiti Island, Future Wars, Cruise for a Corpse, B.A.T, Metal Mutant, Boston Bomb Club, Extase, Interphase, Epic, Robocop 3 ...
The most impressive ST game i ever saw which is NEVER shown in these videos was a true 3D game were you controlled a spaceship flying over a planet. The dynamics of the flight were about 10x faster than any flight simulator game, it really looked like it couldn't be possible to have full real 3D at such fast update frame rate. I don't remember the title but it was mouse or keyboard controlled and the space bar controlled the spaceship thrust. Gravity was extremely realistic and speed was phenomenal. You sometimes had to dog fight an alien ship. The difficulty of the game was to not crash due to gravity.
that game is virus. ported from the archimedes.
sounds like the game Virus
@2:05 shaking hand on captain blood is the 'anti-piracy' protection, to try to make the game unplayable.
Nice selection of games
Powermonger, Another World, Stunt Car Racer, IK+, Panza Kick Boxing, Rainbow Islands, Kick Off 2.
Lots of great games on the list! I’d have added Buggy Boy and Super Sprint to them.
Yes i know and many more my friend
No Overlander ?
what's with Dragon Ninja?
Nice game
@@DimGaming its a slide show :)
You mean very slow game?
@@DimGaming yes, very low fps
😂
My dads favourite game was ‘Grandad 2: In search for sandwiches’ and I’ve tried for ages to download a rom and play it on retroarch
Thanks for the heart! 🙃
I started oput on a speccy sinclair but was bought an ST. Have to admit Micropose Grand Prix, and operation stealth were good favs.
Biggest issue I had with my 520ST was the slowdown when you got too many sprites on the screen - an issue that for the most part the Amiga did not have.
Why did you destroy the rockets in Cannon Fodder?
You didn't know what to do in Mega-lo-Mania.
I had an Atari STe, and my favorites were Fire and Ice (off a demo disk, just one level, but it was great :) ), F-15 Strike Eagle II, Llamatron, and another PD game whose name I can't remember, but felt like a cross between Defender and Asteroids.
Геймплей Атари игр очень хороший !!! Звук как на Спеке !
Rolling Thunder and Gemini Wing were both great conversions, dunno why they never get mentioned.
Bonjour, www.ebay.com/b/atari-st-computer/bn_7024874868
Cadaver (also from the Bitmaps) ?
Yes also from the mighty Bitmap Brothers ! By the way Xenon 2 should also be on that list.
And why is STARGLIDER missing on the list???
good game, maybe in my next video
No Starglider?
Best only in one person's opinion. A lot of fighting games in there and sideways scrollers, only one RPG. How about the Ishar series, Starblade, F19 Stealth Fighter, Typhoon Thompson, Silent Service II, Cadaver, Knights of the Sky, Crazy Cars III, Shuttle, Lure of the Temptress, Virus, Obsession (pinball), Infestation, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge... Carrier Command! Really there are too many to cover in just 16 minutes.
true my friend, but list is from users rating
OMG some classics here - Bomb Jack, Bubble Bobble, Double dragon - but man i wish there would be a decent modern PC version of Populous
Great Yamaha synthesizer chip.
Yesss :)
Missing Rick Dangerous 2, Stunt Car Racer and any Space Quest. Lots of good games on this list, but also a lot of boring ones
I agree, that video is certainly not selective, it's just any games. It's missinga lot of beautiful games especially adventure games with beautiful graphics.
GODZ
Turrican
R-Type
Oids
Robocop
Xenon 2 Megablast
Still have the 1040STe with upgraded 4 meg of RAM and hi-res B/W monitor - can't seem to part with it.
Is North & South just like on Amiga?
Some games missing from this, unless I just missed them. Heroes of the Lance. Licence to kill and Xexon 2. Vroom reminds me of the PS1 as my brother in law bought one and used to go to his house to play. Amiga owners don't understand when they go on about better sound, this games were great fun as they are on the ST, also the graphics were not always better!
I still have my ST and two Amigas, one is still boxed with the original T-shirt. Relaxing watching this during the plan dem IC.
My top: Bomb Jack, Rodlans, Xenon
StarGlider, Another World... and more!
sacaste las chidas que nostalgia
xenon/ bumb jak/ gauntel II/ out run
Was there games for atari st that did not overlap with amiga and which were good also??
A few - Oids is the obvious one and Sundog (from the same people), Get Dexter, Gauntlet, Rana Rama, Super Sprint, Star Trek Rebel Universe, Where Time Stood Still..
not a bad machine really at the end of the day.
Why do some of the games have weird different music? Is it a licensing thing or some other reason. Ghouls and Ghosts as an example on ST nothing like the usual music on most systems. My dad had an ST but I don't remember the music being weird in games.
Maybe from my record machine . I don’t know 🤷♂️
Ballerburg is missing.
I vote for Stormlord and Vroom
Vroom 😍😍😍😍
Missing Bolo. The list is completely missing it, and I'm missing it, too.
Airball, Spindizzy world, Magic Pockets, Carrier Command, Silent Service
carrier command, skull diggery, spherical, ... this list is sorely incomplete :-)
Ok in my next video
Carrier command was awesome
Xenon 2, midnight resistance, magic pocket 🥰 ork 2, creatures, lotus Esprit 🥰 9 lives, Italy '90, final fight 🥰
Impossible Mission 2!
vroom is supes impress!
vive AMIGA ! :D
Both was great machine’s
@@DimGaming oui merci pour ta video ! ;)
A blitter enhanced Cabal would be worth the effort i think.
What cables do u recommend?do u have a link?
What gets me is all Most Atari STFM's had a blitter chip as far as i know why wasnt it used?
@@jasont6287 Mine just has an empty socket =(. But yes after 1988 all of them had one. Its a shame. I have found some good magazine articles on using it in GEM for making games (Gem games weird) but they were show off how to speed up GEM apps with common VDI calls and then made a game with it in the final article. i might test that out a bit.
@@IntoTheVerticalBlank I had an Atari Ste 2mb and later i put a system solutions t28 accelerator board in it i stopped using it when it had intermittant crashes and wouldnt boot and i still think its in the loft lol long with my zx spectrum 2+ as far as i know TOS 1.62 used the blitter for gem screen calls/operations. and from what i have seen the blitter would have made a huge improvement if used in all ST games.
List looks a bit random. Missing many good ones.
Any list that includes the dreadful us golds version of outrun is scrapping the bottom of the barrel
Technocop, afterburner, nebulus, purple Saturn day, barbarian, kick off 2, silkworm, supersprint, buggy boy, mortville Manor, ik +, Batman, prince of persia, Rick dangerous, winter games...spherical, shufflepuck café, ...
Had a 1040st with a music package and keyboard setup for basic music making and a few games. Loved it but moved to console gaming later.
I loved Ghouls n Ghosts for the Spectrum! Looks much better on the Atari.
I miss my Atari ST. Emulators are just not the same 😔
For me this is missing Rick Dangerous 1 & 2, Elite, Leisure Suit Larry 1 & 2, Weird Dreams, Final Fight, Golden Axe, Ik+, Settlers, Premier Manager 2, Another World, Stunt Car Racer....and others!
I had that first game but it was called IMPACT
I never understood why so few early 1980s games were released for the Atari ST. I remember back when I had an Atari 8-bit, I was considering upgrading to the ST. When I looked at the games available, I realized that I would not be able to play any of my old time favorites. Games like Donkey Kong, Defender, Dig Dug, Robotron, Ms. Pacman, Tempest, etc. were not available. I think that is when I just decided to upgrade to an IBM PC and give up on the gaming PCs.
Αtari st had better technical features there is no reason for old console game
Maybe the public Domain demo scene tried to compensate for that lack ?
Best games for Atari ST.. Outrun..
Great Giana Sisters missing
The Last Samourai is a beautiful animated graphics game. A lot of these games are not good and you miss the really good ones.
SUNDOG - FROZEN LEGACY is missing. Best game ever for the Atari ST.
also "rick dangerous"
