This all started in 2016 when the watch market sales were slowing down so Rolex pulled their watches off the shelf in hopes of giving the appearance of sacristy, with a imaginary wait list, but they are no low in inventories on any model with the exception of the Daytona. I've been to ADs and the bric and mortar grey dealers shops around the world and some how the Grey Dealers always have all the new models available and the Ads have next to none in stock. I had a grey dealer, in the Middle East, admit to me that he could get me any model I wanted, I asked how and he admitted that he gets them from the AD. The same one I went to asking for OP41 Black dial but it was only available at the Grey Dealer, brand new with stickers, at a 40% mark up. The watches are great but this is a racket and the AD are laughing all the way to the bank because they are getting guaranteer sales with kick backs, unlike prior to 2016 where the average watch lover could save up and walk in to the AD for that Rolex they where have been dreaming of when they are ready to buy the watch that's been in the windows for months.
Yup, I heard of an AD who had a SA that was selling straight to flippers and grey, but it was frowned upon by the other SAs because she was doing something unethical. But she was the top in sales, and it soon became the way business was done.
I think it was in 2016 or 2017 when I was able to go to an AD and order a DateJust simply by putting down a 50% deposit. Now I am on a waiting list for a DateJust LOL. I am not doing follow up calls or anything, kind of like you. I will just wait till those days come back when I can just buy it. This is silly.
I got tired of playing the game with my AD. Went to the grey market and had the watch in 1 day. I paid more, but it’s actually better than buying a bunch of stuff I don’t want just for the chance of getting the watch. The dealer was easy to work with, met me personally and allowed me to trade in a watch I wasn’t wearing.
I did this too. I asked for a polar explorer II in late 2018, and apparently 4 watches and a $500 strap from my AD wasn’t enough to make the cut, so I just bought it gray and barely spent more money on it since everything had calmed down. Got my 114060 gray too and didn’t even pay much over for it.
A lot of WatchTubers(?) make it sound like standard operational procedure that you have to buy a lot of random stuff at the AD in order to move up the list, and when a guy has the money for that, yeah, fine. Throw your watch boxes in your Ferrari and grind your gears as you drive away. But this isn't capitalism so much as it is poor behavior allowed by a large business because they feel they can get away with it. The plumbing contractor asking for a tip before installing the toilet even though you already cut a check to their boss. Expensive watches are a luxury. This isn't about the blackmarket organ trade, but I'd like a Rolex. I'd like to go into a store if I have the money and buy a Rolex. These are just luxury items, no one is shedding a tear that I can't get a Rolex, but instead of thinking about me, picture instead some crooked AD laughing about how many customers they've screwed over. And picture some guys in Switzerland shrugging and sipping espresso.
Yeah exactly, I don't think it will serve the brand long term in a softer market. That said Ferrari and more recently Porsche have been playing similar games that people seem to enjoy playing. I don't find value in buying a bunch of stuff I don't want to buy a watch after months to years, they should be chasing me. Other brands are happy to not play these games.
I tend to agree. However, ADs are in a bit of a tough spot. Hustlers walk through to door daily trying to buy a hot watch and flip it. I’m sure that makes a small family jeweler feel like he’s getting bent over, so he’ll be on the lookout for that. On the other hand, I’ve been doing business with my AD for over 20 years. An engagement ring here, diamond earrings there, a Tag or two. Nothing spectacular, and well below 6-figure spend history, but I’ll never get the call for that GMT. They’re beholden to the big spenders. They know where their bread is buttered. The Rolex AD won’t always be the belle of the ball, but for now, they’ll gleefully ride the wave!
Honestly. I appreciate you deciding to make a public return. Your abstract looks at the hobby define a huge difference between your content and the rest of the ubiquity.
Back in 2021 I mentioned to my AD that I was interested in getting an Explorer 36mm and a month later I got the call. It a take it or leave it situation, and I didn’t hesitate. Having decided only to buy 36/37mm watches kind of helps me in my Rolex quest. Thanks for another great video. ❤
You are 100% correct on everything. The exhibition pieces at my AD are 100% real watches. Rolex makes them carry they them so people can try on a Rolex if they come in even if they dont have a watch to sell them. Rolex wants the AD to follow up several times after stopping in the store just to lead them on and keep them hooked. Rolex will let the AD sell the exhibition pieces later down the line as used modules since the AD has had to pay rolex for these display watch's in full! Honestly, take your AD a bottle of your favorite wine, tell them you appreciate what they do because its not easy and I bet you get THE CALL next month.
Wow ive been subbed for at least 12 years maybe more, you haven't aged one bit!!!! As for the MRG Square it's a G shock with exotic materials. This is what we call in the community a sleeper because its a 4k retail watch. It's made with exotic materials like gold, DAT55G, a titanium alloy Carbotanium. Highly Scratch resistant and polished on the Grand Sekio line. Absolutely stunning in the flesh.
I literally walked into an AD and told them, hey I’m looking to buy a Reverso and a Ballon Bleu - 2 hard to move pieces, what can you do for me with regards to getting a ND Sub or even an Explorer 2 Polar. No dice, just the usual deflection and boilerplate response. Ended up just buying the 2 pieces on the secondary market with full warranties and saving almost 6k.
'Building a relationship' with a dealer seems like a net loss (mostly in terms of hassle) relative to just paying market price. ROI is more important than telling some 'I'm not a sucker' narrative.
As someone who just yesterday received their first Rolex from an AD, I can honestly say it was a journey!!!! I mean I followed the blueprint we all hear about. Traded in a watch for a loss, used that credit to get the wife some diamonds, then bought her a mint dial DJ….. fast forward half a year and DOZENS of artisan croissants later I get my 126603. There really aren’t too many other Rolex models I’m interested in. I got my Rolex grail right off the bat. Felt bad for the guy who came in when I was going through the ”Rolex experience”giving the spiel many of us have given. Gotta begin somewhere I guess 🤷
I bought one. A "Sprite" (hate the name, it's a "Riddler") Had to wait ten months but I bought one. I had a spend history of less than 15k and while I did visit once or month or so to say hi to the saleswoman, I wouldn't call it "harassment." I don't think my spend history really mattered honestly. It helped that I had bought something, that I was a customer, but my spend history was relatively small. I would tell people to just get on a waitlist and not be a prick and don't hold your breath, and you may be pleasantly surprised to one day get a call.

Was in Jersey yesterday and spent the day watch "shopping" with Donnie Luxury. All Exhibition only models on display. Not a single actual Rolex at any Rolex dealer. I was laughing (internally) at everything and how Pan, Omega, Breitling are essentially worthless for trade, but also marveling how we still-still-STILL cannot buy ANY new Rolex. It's back to normal, but dealers have been caught short with huge amounts of stock. They will try to maintain price and make u a silly offer because they will buy from someone desperate. I always buy non rolex preowned and near new, about 30-35% off. 20 alone is tax
Yeah, buying 99% of watches new at retail is a guaranteed loss. Alternative point, used watches are on sale and are finally becoming realistically priced haha. I hear the frustration in your comment and share it myself!
@@JANTHONYCHANNELThis is the way. Folks need to look at the many, many other brands other than Rolex, and that sell for very large discounts on the secondary market. Heck, you can now get a Laureato for $6800 used. It’s a $14,000 watch at retail!
Very True on "Exhibition Pieces", Tried on the GMT Master Red/Blue Exhibition Piece. Subtle indicators that I might have the opportunity to buy it while I should really try this Gold piece that is immediately available. Went back 2 weeks later the Exhibiition Piece is gone - likely sold to someone who was more amenable to buying the gold piece. Clearly not illegal. They are a business after all and trying to sell less in demand Gold pieces and will sell the highly desirable piece to those willing to also buy the less desirable pieces. Its Busines.... And it is hard to argue that a Rolex Watch is something that everybody "needs" and therefore should have equal access.... I dont like it. But not much can be done about it.
J.Anthony! Another good video! Play stupid games and you might win stupid prizes… Like a Rolex. There’s a difference between buying tens of thousands of dollars of junk. You don’t want and staying in touch with the A.D.. Just saying lol anyway great to have you back
Thanks Marc, I gather you've found a better way. That's one of my favorite phrases. Don't want to play the stupid game. Appreciate the support and our live chats sir.
Can you do a video on what to take from the AD and what to pass on. I have been offered watches. It would be interesting to get your take. My interest is buy and hold and value retention.
In general, it's pretty straight forward. If you can get stainless steel sports models at retail, do it if you like them. The two tone and especially precious metal ones are almost always better bought on the secondhand market outside of "hype models" like the John Mayer or Rootbeer.
Back in 2015, I walked into an AD to return a PAM 104. Sitting there was an original BLNR 116710. I grabbed it, financed 3k and less then 2 yrs later those days were over!
I’m like you - refuse to buy bs I don’t want for a chance to buy what I want. If the spend is that ridiculous to “qualify” then it honestly justifies just overspending on 2nd market; might be cheaper overall
Yeah exactly, if you need to buy like 3-4 Datejusts to get offered a Sub or Pepsi you just massively overspent. Also if they catch you selling what you bought good luck ever getting another call.
Appreciate that, gather you are the only person that would watch that haha. It's a totally handmade Colonial Molyneux in Mahogony made in Zeeland Michigan about 40 years ago. Runs a German 3 chime movement.
I have an Apple watch that I've worn less than a dozen times, I respect people that like them. I couldn't find 1 minute of content to say about them haha. I know some people wear both an Apple watch and a normal watch. I'm not a tech guy in general so my bias is an outlier from the market.
The problem is.... the fucking grey market are already the first in the list and have AD's who have "regulars" who are affiliated with grey markets and they leave no room for legit regular customers who really want a rolex.
I used to put my name down at Rolex and AP dealers a couple of years ago to get on this so called wait list. I couldn't give a damn now, it's just a watch at the end of the day.
The speculators have by and large packed their bags and left by now (if they're smart). The prices will correct and supply/demand will return to normal. It's just a question of how soon. I think the nonsense will be completely over when Rolex brings their new plant online in 2029.
I've had 4 Rolexes over 50 years, and I'm tired of their games. They've adopted the "Ferrari attitude": We may sell you one, but we may not. My current Sinn keeps better time than any of my Rolexes did anyway.
I will never buy a Rolex from an AD, that are over bloated dealers & over priced watches, now that I hear this, only reinforces my feelings about this kinda crap. I'll give my business to smaller micro brands that want my business, not from dealers or companies that are "gatekeeping" or playing other games.
Sick of hearing about the Rolex Pepsi in EVERY Rolex video. You started out by (reasonably) saying that when you bought your GMT a few years back you just didn't understand the hype. Later in the video, you reveal that you are on a waiting list for the Rolex Pepsi. When we get to the point in time where EVERYONE has a Rolex Pepsi, will the hype stop?
Haha, didn’t realize I did that or how offensive it could be perceived haha. Noted, my last video on that watch was posted over 5 years ago so we should be good. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Rolex produces more than 1 million timepieces a year and the AD mentions the waiting list. I don’t get it, even though I have several Rolex models, I have never purchased from AD always on grey market. Wish things were different

Yep, I hear you. I don't hate the players; I hate the game. Think it's silly but it is Capitalism.
Great points. Nice to see you back my friend.
@@amintaslneto hey, long time indeed. Thanks for sticking around.
The muppet boiler room secondary grey luxury watch market is dead
It's will just reset at lower prices, they'll make money but lost a chuck on existing inventory
lol watch him too
Amazing, unbelievable, but true!
LOVE THAT YOU’RE BACK
Thank you for saying that and continuing to watch!
Subscribed!
Thank you for that!
@@JANTHONYCHANNELyou’re welcome
Back in 2015, I walked into an AD to return a PAM 104. Sitting there was an original BLNR 116710. I grabbed it, financed 3k and less then 2 yrs later those days were over!
Wow, you timed that perfectly!
@JANTHONYCHANNEL The sun moon and stars were aligned for that one! @@JANTHONYCHANNEL
Totally agree with your opinion. Excellent video and many thanks for sharing.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by, watch and comment : )
great video as usual my friend!
Thank you! Cheers!
A good topic may be what non hyped models or brands a collector should be looking at-and why-as the bubble starts to deflate.
Thanks for the tip!
Yep, we have the same logic.
Yeah, exactly!
So happy you're back!
Grateful to hear, appreciate that I was missed. Glad you get something out of these videos.
Mr. Anthony, would you kindly make a video about that vertical clock
Appreciate that, gather you are the only person that would watch that haha. It's a totally handmade Colonial Molyneux in Mahogony made in Zeeland Michigan about 40 years ago. Runs a German 3 chime movement.
@@JANTHONYCHANNEL All good, no worries…..great piece of functional furniture

Give us your take on the Apple Watch or smartwatches in general. Do they have a place on your wrist?
I have an Apple watch that I've worn less than a dozen times, I respect people that like them. I couldn't find 1 minute of content to say about them haha. I know some people wear both an Apple watch and a normal watch. I'm not a tech guy in general so my bias is an outlier from the market.
Love the new contents❤
Thank you! Appreciate the support and taking the time to watch.
“Building a relationship” comes at a risk too, because once your sales guy leaves, so does your spend history.
Dealers are being sued for doing this. Guy after a rare patek spent 500k and was misled, he sued for it. Its a bad trading practice
Great points!
The problem is.... the fucking grey market are already the first in the list and have AD's who have "regulars" who are affiliated with grey markets and they leave no room for legit regular customers who really want a rolex.
Seems that way for sure doesn’t it!
I used to put my name down at Rolex and AP dealers a couple of years ago to get on this so called wait list. I couldn't give a damn now, it's just a watch at the end of the day.
Yep, I feel you!
I think you nailed it. Also, Rolex is an easy choice, takes no effort and who will scrutinize your decision? Good but not great watches.
The OG!
The speculators have by and large packed their bags and left by now (if they're smart). The prices will correct and supply/demand will return to normal. It's just a question of how soon. I think the nonsense will be completely over when Rolex brings their new plant online in 2029.
I follow your logic and hope you are right. This market has been silly.
I'd love to join your live. It's been a long time since I've pissed off the watch fan boys 😂
Nav!!! Yes please, we should figure something out. I'm still remembering how to do all this stuff. Never planned on making a comeback.
I've had 4 Rolexes over 50 years, and I'm tired of their games. They've adopted the "Ferrari attitude": We may sell you one, but we may not. My current Sinn keeps better time than any of my Rolexes did anyway.
Good for you for getting out of this silly game they play.
I will never buy a Rolex from an AD, that are over bloated dealers & over priced watches, now that I hear this, only reinforces my feelings about this kinda crap. I'll give my business to smaller micro brands that want my business, not from dealers or companies that are "gatekeeping" or playing other games.
I respect that, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
I had no history with my AD and have brought two Rolex that I wanted from them.
Recently? Where are you geographically, sounds like you have an awesome AD.
Yeah, I gather with 7 billion people on the planet it still isn't enough, but the waitlist seems extreme and padded.
I wonder what the Ad’s will do now since people are tightening up their belts because of the economy ?
If it's anything like the car market, they are "suddenly" going to find more inventory.
Popular models won’t be readily available for a long time. But you’ll probably get “the call” for the less-hype models.
I have the same clock
You have great taste!!! Thanks for watching!
This dude is like unfrozen caveman!
😂 OGs know
Haha, that's a new one.
😅😂🤣🤣
People are so" brave" behind a key board. I wonder if you are brave enough to insult people in person 🤔
@@JANTHONYCHANNEL hi! I didn’t mean any disrespect. I was saying you haven’t aged a bit and original followers would know that. Glad to see you making videos again and would love to know what you are wearing these days.
If spend tens and hundreds of thousand you better off buy grey and still be ahead of the game….
Yeah exactly, at some point you are better off just paying the mark-up.
I waited 10 months for my submariner Starbucks and bought two other Rolex watches. One for wife and the other for daughter. I have bought three other Rolex watches from Bezel in California. I had a pleasant experience with both companies. The AD has a list of four other Rolex watches I want. Time will tell. I wouldn’t buy them in the grey market because they are a bunch of greedy fk’s
Glad to hear that you had a positive experience with your AD!
Fakes have never been better, that’s my issue, and why I refuse to buy anywhere apart from an AD.
That is a fair point, fakes have gotten scary accurate.
Who would want to buy one!
Good video. Don't get Rolex from the AD. Get other brands. 😂
ADs would love it if you bought all the other watches they can’t sell haha
I agree! I personally think nothing beats Cartier. The design and finish is fantastic. Another example is the Speedmaster...just awsome. I could go on. 😊 IWC. JLC.....AP and PP.....who really needs Rolex...😊
✊ Yeah !
Rolex & Hermes have the same business model.
Yep…
What else is on your wish list at the AD?
Starbucks, Pepsi Jubilee
@@JANTHONYCHANNEL Green Bezel Submariner should be reasonably obtainable, with regular contact. Pepsi Jubilee, not so much.
Appreciate the tip, I don't have it in me to suck up to an AD.
@@JANTHONYCHANNELNot saying you should bring them coffee or donuts, not ever. Just pop your head in, every 3 months, and let them know you are still interested, if it is not too far of a drive. I am against any sort of begging or games or extra purchases.
I’ve done that a bit, appreciate the tip!
the background music is annoying af.....
lol, honestly I get totally conflicting messages on that. I get told people hate it or love it and missed it haha
Greed, and A-greed!!
Well put haha, thanks!
Just boycott ADs
🤣
Turn the music off, and go shave.
After I shave, what shirt and pants do you want me to wear?
It's not crap practice, it's a successful way to sustain financial success. Supply and demand. Capitalism rules!
You're right, it's a great way to make additional profit.
Your videos are great but I recently saw your appearance on AC3? Disappointed you supported this channel… It has supported multiple watch scammers and is usually filled with misogyny and hatred. Unsubscribed!
@@fire_watch7735 Hey. I do go on there occasionally to talk watches and cars, to your point the chat can be quite toxic and it is has honestly caused me pause at times.
