+Francisco Torrealba Considering that the teacher has been with him since he was 4, the teacher grew in his overall understanding of how Paravicini handles the world so I'm not too overly surprised this was the end result.
+OldeFreedom Oh it's not about time man, I've personally seen some parents live with autistic children all their life and still don't grasp how they see the world, either express themselves towards them, acknowledging them like this guy does. But indeed as you said, his teacher is an awesome person that managed to understand what many people can't. P. S. Not a native English speaker, I'm sorry if there's some grammar hiccups or something lol. Peace. 🖖🏼
Francisco Torrealba Yep, Adam really is a great teacher an great person. I mean look at Derek's finger technique, you can see the feelings flow out of his hands an it's just amazing. They're both a great tandem an a joy to watch an listen too.
With the giant leaps in medical science we will find a lot of people we thought once unable to contribute are able to open our eyes to many new ideas and frontiers. We must embrace those that we don't understand and seek this greatness in everyone!
Really one of the most humbling shows I have seen in a long time. So wonderful that people along his life walk took care in doing the best for him.....
i dont remember if it was on "Super Humans" or another show on the discovery channel, but Derek was on there. his ability to play the piano is far surpassed by his vast library of music that he keeps in his head, even some of the lesser known or rarer pieces of music he can play back at any given moment any chord or style. this TedTalks is just the tip of the iceberg of what this man is capable of musically.
I was feeling similarly at first but consider the following: 1. It takes a lot of resources to keep someone like Derek alive and in his unique case, emotionally fulfilled doing something that he enjoys. Derek's gift combined with Adam's help is the only reason why he is so happy and not suffering in a group home or depending on the income of family. 2. Adam always addresses Derek directly with compliments and anecdotes. It's a unique relationship but there is more respect than exploitation.
He could have been easily isolated due to his blindness and severe autism, but with music he can communicate and connect with people. He seem to truly love music and wants to share his love for music with other people. But I get your point. But I don't think he is being exploited, I'm sure his family and other caretakers keeping an eye on things :)
Cuando las limitaciones no son pretexto y cuando las y los genios aún no saben que lo son porque no hay nadie que los impulse a encontrarlo. Derek es un vivo ejemplo de la genialidad encontrada a tiempo.
I'm glad that they mentioned Art Tatum at the end there; I definitely heard some influence in Derek's style. Art is a great inspiration for a whole lot of pianists.
Oh my god! I remember first seeing this guy's videos and the only thing he was missing was emotion factors: tempo and dynamics. Adam Ockelford, amazing progress! Chopsticks definitely impressed me. David, very magical performance!
Strange thing about emotions. Once Adam tested Derrick on emotional spectrum of playing and it seems he can only comprehend happy and sad playing like major and minor. When he was asked to play angry he hit the notes really hard and started growling but beyond that he didn't know what to do. I feel Derrick's music often leaves me to be open to interpretation to how I can perceive it. Nevertheless it's beautiful.
Don't worry, it all gets easier with practice. I sit down now almost without thinking, and setting up the sheet music gives me almost no trouble. I do still leave the lid down, though, old habits die hard.
How marvelous and inspiring. Reminds me that as a child my father was a janitor for a local school with several pianos. Every few months a piano tuner came to tune the pianos and they were invariably blind, some with sticks some with dogs. I remember how sad I felt for them that this was the only work they could get. I now wonder how many could have excelled like Derek if the support he had was available to them. We seriously don't do enough now to support and encourage people with disability
I ask myself ....How is this possible?....then realize that the answer is simple.....Just sit down, watch & listen, and be thankful I can do that. There is no answer necessary, the experience is enough. I thought about this as I try to learn piano, and punch out a couple of thuddy sounding lines of noise.....He's just simply remarkable :)
You obviously have no understanding of Derek. Even though he may contribute to the talk, he only gets his confidence from his ability to play. He wouldn't be able to give an explanation or back story to his amazing skills. Adam is merely there to answer all the questions. The interactions you see between the 2 of them is the best and most productive way for Derek and that is evident as he still enjoy playing the piano.
I was born 10 months behind my bother...We share the same year of birth for two months ... I was premature and what does that mater? This video is a carnival... how dear you put on display this type of understanding between what you think is geniuses ... This gentleman is a geniuses and will contribute to our future… This guy is reacting to your Barnum and Bailey circuses because he is not privy to street smarts … how dear you…
I totally agree with you. What I was saying is that people with no discernible skills are the critics and haters. All I did was expand on an incorrect premise to expose the ones at fault. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression, that was not my intent.
It is wonderful listening to genius every now and then. What we see here is an interpretation of what we are hearing which cannot be seen in his mind. This may have been a curated experience of Derek, but I think the audience would have also appreciated hearing Derek's unrelenting full fledged inner mind sound symphony uncontrolled and just play his mind for a moment rather than just simply music. We wanted to hear Derek's interpretation of music. How would he redefine it?
He is awesome, I though some notes didn't sound right but then they must of sounded like the originals or the way most piano players play. Personally I would of changed them myself. But that is me. He is still awesome.
Even so this guy is providing a mutually beneficial service of assisting and being a partner and friend to this guy who disabled and dependent. Both Derek is obvious content to say the least or happy doing what he does, Adam of course gets a benefit out of it but so does the world by seeing somebody who is a great artist. One may think in order to avoid "exploitation" they have to be under house arrest and hidden from society like some beast but what good or respect is that to him or the world.
It's fascinating how the human brain works. Especially when we only use a small percentage of it. Imagine what we could do when we use 100 percent of it. This video blew my mind. Funny character too lol
I most heartily agree with poster, 'USERNAME...', in that--all too often, however inexcusable, that which is ethereal, and unique (because it is not understood), is denigrated so that it is made to appear comic, freakish, and so to be easily dismissed, or--on the other hand, though equally loathsome, is to deify it, both so as to not engender fear, or perceived threat. Although I, 'ouch', at the term, "Yankee Doodle Dandy", I willingly concede that the media in my Country does pander to the low.
I wondered that, but nevertheless, whatever Adam's motivation, the life afforded Derek as a result of the man's involvement seems far more fulfilling than it otherwise would have been, and that's all that really matters. Given that Adam was very careful to refer to this severely autistic person in such that he was talking for him, rather than merely about him, suggests to me that maybe he cares more than you may fear.
Okkleford has spent a lot of his life working with Paravicini and helping him, since he was a young boy until now. I think Okkleford is just extremely excited and proud of Paravicini and he is just being a bit boastful the way a parent is with their talented child...
Fkn crikey the 20th negative comment about Derek on this video. the man is a walking miracle sent from heaven. Arguably the best pianist the live. Maybe not composer, but 100% piano player.
I love that his teacher talks to him instead of about him. Inspiring.
that's a great observation. I too love that his teacher is taking to him
+Francisco Torrealba

+Francisco Torrealba Why wouldn't he? Derek's a person, and he's sitting right there.
Francisco Torrealba Yep, Adam really is a great teacher an great person. I mean look at Derek's finger technique, you can see the feelings flow out of his hands an it's just amazing. They're both a great tandem an a joy to watch an listen too.
Teachers deserve so much more respect than that.
only good teachers. which most of them are not. at least school teachers..
With the giant leaps in medical science we will find a lot of people we thought once unable to contribute are able to open our eyes to many new ideas and frontiers. We must embrace those that we don't understand and seek this greatness in everyone!
What an incredible and unique life-journey they have together, love Derek, his music and Adam, what a kind and humble teacher.
Really one of the most humbling shows I have seen in a long time. So wonderful that people along his life walk took care in doing the best for him.....
As a fellow musician, I'm completely astounded at Derek's music ability and wish I could be just a fraction as good as he is
I followed this Guy for years...he is absolutely a shredder.
Which one was "Guy"?
As easily as I sit here in my chair and I breathe and my heart beats this man plays wonderfully!!
i dont remember if it was on "Super Humans" or another show on the discovery channel, but Derek was on there. his ability to play the piano is far surpassed by his vast library of music that he keeps in his head, even some of the lesser known or rarer pieces of music he can play back at any given moment any chord or style. this TedTalks is just the tip of the iceberg of what this man is capable of musically.
I can barely find music on a radio....this Kat is spot on by memory...loved it
Totally got misty eyed while I listened to this. He plays so beautifully.
Thanks Ted for posting this amazing young fellow! Best wishes to Derek for every success.

WOW! Blew me away when he could instantly recreate any chord just by hearing it! Wish I could do that! Unreal!
He could have been easily isolated due to his blindness and severe autism, but with music he can communicate and connect with people. He seem to truly love music and wants to share his love for music with other people. But I get your point. i hope derek is happy and can trully understand and appreciate life.
This is seemingly impossible to not like, yet six people have disliked it. Ugh... I am sharing this on all social medias I am part of!
Cuando las limitaciones no son pretexto y cuando las y los genios aún no saben que lo son porque no hay nadie que los impulse a encontrarlo. Derek es un vivo ejemplo de la genialidad encontrada a tiempo.
it’s almost like he has two brains for each hand working totally independently. incredible and mind boggling.
I saw Derek on an episode of Stan Lee's Superhumans. The guy is beyond impressive.
Stunning......simply stunning musicianship.
And to think I almost didn't want to watch this one; that was truly impressive! I love music like this and hope he's got an album from his trip to LA!
I wanna give this guy a hug.
I'm glad that they mentioned Art Tatum at the end there; I definitely heard some influence in Derek's style. Art is a great inspiration for a whole lot of pianists.
OMG! He has superhuman skills. It blew me away, completely!
Live long, Derek!
I would love to buy this guy an electric guitar.... I think the touch and feel would be true love and what amazing music would follow.
: )
Surely one of the greatest musicians of our time!
Oh my god! I remember first seeing this guy's videos and the only thing he was missing was emotion factors: tempo and dynamics. Adam Ockelford, amazing progress! Chopsticks definitely impressed me. David, very magical performance!

What an amazing man! I love him. I love how excited he gets.
thank you TED for showing this to the world. Really wonderful
Miraculous. Adam you are a wonderful teacher and Derek you are a genius.
I also get that feeling. On the other hand I also get the feeling he is just a proud teacher.
It's amazing how his brain works, congratulations!
And i thought people as talented as this only exist in the movies.
The Paganini piece sounds even better on piano.
I suddenly feel very proud of myself for having this ability, although scaled down a thousand times
I just started learning, taken 2 weeks to open lid. I'm a slow learner. Next lesson sitting down, can't wait.
Don't worry, it all gets easier with practice. I sit down now almost without thinking, and setting up the sheet music gives me almost no trouble. I do still leave the lid down, though, old habits die hard.

"In the Key of Genius" is also the name of the biography Ockelford wrote on Derek Paravicini
That is just astounding. I am speechless, what an amazing man
I think Okkelford is just sharing his great talent to a good audience.
I am hooked to his version of the theme of Paganini.
Does anyone else hear jazz even in the classical pieces the guy is amazing ?
He's incredible. So brilliant.
Caught myself clapping alone in my room after the theme from paganini
I ask myself ....How is this possible?....then realize that the answer is simple.....Just sit down, watch & listen, and be thankful I can do that. There is no answer necessary, the experience is enough. I thought about this as I try to learn piano, and punch out a couple of thuddy sounding lines of noise.....He's just simply remarkable :)
Fantastic. What an incredable man :-) I wish him well on his journey through life.
What a precious soul!

He couldn't exactly do it himself. This man is probably just helping him so more people can see his music.
One of the best Chopstick improvisations ever :D
14:35 His improvisational style reminds me of the late Dave Brubeck. Really pleasing to listen to.
I was born 10 months behind my bother...We share the same year of birth for two months ... I was premature and what does that mater? Yes! Well said. I certainly agree with this impression of the long-time relationship.
This guy is a genius, he is amazing and has a god given gift, i feel bad that this guy drags him around like a freak show...
Incredibly touching
Wow....I am speechless watching this. Thank you!
I am loving this, this is amazing to listen to.
Blew me away, absolutely.
One of the best Ted talks I've seen!
His music is very straightforward, and I like that.
I totally agree with you. What I was saying is that people with no discernible skills are the critics and haters. All I did was expand on an incorrect premise to expose the ones at fault. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression, that was not my intent.
You mean some people can't tell which notes chords are made out of? Shoot, I've taken this ability for granted my entire life.
WOW WOW WOW WOW!!! Transposing like that is sooo clever :)
I have found that those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. Those who can't teach become critics.
He swings quite a lot when he plays, particularly on the Paganini.
It is wonderful listening to genius every now and then. What we see here is an interpretation of what we are hearing which cannot be seen in his mind. the vid wasnt really what i was expecting but he is very talented!

I'm glad I was sitting down when I watched this.
His piano skills are Amazing

This was great

His version of chopsticks is extraordinary!!!
i dont understand why this video has 12 dislikes
Derek is a badass!!!!!!!! Very good stuff!
truly extraordinary
Life affirming genius.
As soon as i saw the thumbnail I knew this was gonna be good :)
My thoughts exactly. I really hope Derek is at least enjoying himself on stage.
My brain melted
I wondered that, but nevertheless, whatever Adam's motivation, the life afforded Derek as a result of the man's involvement seems far more fulfilling than it otherwise would have been, and that's all that really matters.

I think this guy should try composing his own music, amazing...
I do enjoy the part he played Chopstick
That's how if you take one sense out, you get another exclusively great (sorry, if the phrase sounds awkward, but I think you get the point).
Great man........god bless
Extraordinary human being
Captivating.
Someone please let this guy hear some good music.
Amazing!
He is definitely some sort of Rain Man
love this
respect to you derek p
He improvised a lot on Caprice 24 by Paganini.
9:55 "in G minor" plays in relative minor of G major
Okkleford has spent a lot of his life working with Paravicini and helping him, since he was a young boy until now. I think Okkleford is just extremely excited and proud of Paravicini and he is just being a bit boastful the way a parent is with their talented child...
he is improvising on 14:30. Though music is more than just pitch/notes, so I doubt he can make something competitive.
Fkn crikey the 20th negative comment about Derek on this video. the man is a walking miracle sent from heaven. Arguably the best pianist the live. Maybe not composer, but 100% piano player.
Damn son, Derek can you singlehandedly save Jazz next plz
