One of Monoliths tenets is to make games playable if you start with the newest games. You might get some things, but for 99% everything will be explained within the current title. You aren't going to be in the dark on any story beats

but 3 is a little unique to the other 2... they have basically brought back the environments and characters from both...it's a bit more complicated then that, but i assume you know what i mean. having the mage from the first game revealed as the queen of keves or one of the drivers from the 2nd being the queen of agnus heavily relies on you knowing these two or it's meaningless.
they might have aimed for that when each game came with it's own setting, characters and lore. because that's the way new and disconnected works... but xc3 is nothing like that.. it couldn't be more old and connected.
i'd say you could still enjoy it if you played it without 1 or 2 but in my opinion.. you'd be robbing yourself of the intended experience.

It's certainly not NECESSARY to play the previous games, but it hits SOOOO different when you know the previous games. Like... One spoiler free example would be the Urayan Titan, which is on both the cover of 2 (alive) and 3 (dead). And when you reach that titans area, with the background knowledge of 2, it hits sooo different than any game ever before.
I mean for example, the combat, the characters, they all kind of have to do with 1 and 2. Keves is basically Xenoblade 1 and Agnus is Xenoblade 2 and the combat resembles the combat of their games, with keves character arts loading up over time (Like in Xenoblade 1) and agnus character arts charging up with auto attacks (like in Xenoblade 2)... We even have some VERY IMPORTANT LORE CHARACTERS either being directly Xenoblade 1 or 2 Characters and some characters strongly resembling Xenoblade 1 or 2 characters.
Xeno Games are always a lot about the meta stories and the overarching lore. You can play each game on its own and have a full experience, but there is an overarching lore, and Xenoblade 3 is the culmination of that Xeno"BLADE" part of the overarching lore. So if you CAN, I would HIGHLY recommand to play 1 and then 2 before (in that order) before starting 3. But if you won't play it otherwise at all, then just play 3, its still a great experience on its own.

Many of the environments have things from xenoblade 1 and 2 and also some of the characters look similar to or are characters from the previous games which makes it really fun to see a new character or area and going "I remember that from the other games". I got a bit through 3 and then saw a lot of references to 2 which was the only one I'd played at the time and realized that it would be really cool if I had played the first game too, so I bought the first game and now I'm about halfway through it and having played all of xenoblade 2 and torna and played around half of xenoblade 1, it made xenoblade 3 much more fun to play.

I have 10 hours into 3 so far and I've seen SO many subtle references to past titles.
I see a lot of people saying you don't need to play 1 or 2 to play 3. While you don't need to PLAY 1 or 2 to be able to PLAY 3, you do need to get through 1, 2, and X in order to understand why things are being done or presented in the way they are.
Take the scene where Noah and friends are scavenging Vandham's left behind storage crates. With Riku and...the pink nopon (haven't memorized names yet lol)... they're literally just chunking tons of turnips out of the one crate they are scavenging. If you never played X, you probably find that detail trivial and even not worth paying attention. If you have played X, chances are you got a good chuckle out the obscure reference to Tatsu.
Or how about stumbling across the Great Wall of the Hand in the desert area? If you didn't get through 1, this would just be another seemingly unimportant landmark.
TL;DR You absolutely NEED to play 1: DE, X, 2, and 2:Torna in order to understand the significance of what happens in 3. Also, those are just fantastic games in their own right that deserve your attention. Go play them first so you can fully appreciate and enjoy everything 3 throws at you.
P.S. It would also do you some good to play Xenogears. There are some interesting nods to Xenogears throughout all the Xenoblade games.

I may have had an easier time since I have played 1 and 2 but I feel like they have been explaining the systems at a good clip without it being overwhelming
That alone makes this game so much more approachable for new players without getting into the faster paced beginning, interesting characters and the overall art and music style.
They've done a really great job streamlining the experience and I applaud them for it.

@@cyberrock6248 XB2 leans much more into the amine look and story. It was very stylized and cell shaded. I really liked the style but it wasn't for everyone and some of the character designs drove me crazy. I'm not one for overly sexulized designs and some of the blades were extreme in that way. It made a weird dichotomy where I really liked the character but hated the design.
XB3 has dialed that back a bit landing somewhere between the first and second game stylistically. I personally think it's a good median for the series and I really love the character designs.
I rather like what I've seen of the world design in 3 thus far but it's nowhere as dramatic as the first two games, with the twin titans and the cloud sea. What makes the world in 3 really cool is that it's the settings from the first two games smashed together so you see parts of familiar ground all the time. That effect might be lost a little if you haven't played the other games but it's still really beautiful.

@@cyberrock6248 I recommend playing at least a bit of 1 before 2 because it has better tutorials for explaining basic things like the break and topple system. Xenoblade 2 is my favourite in the series but it's the least user friendly of the ones on switch. Xenoblade 3 has a lot of plot connections since the entire world is a fusion of xenoblade 1 and 2 so it's best as either the first or last game to play in the series. Xenoblade 2 also has a really good world and probably the best world building and character development in the series

I would describe Xenoblade like an old school turned based Final Fantasy RPG where they have moved the cooldown on turns to be cooldown on abilities instead with open world exploration. But yeah, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 also does a really good job at explaining it's battle system one thing at a time and I think it's party of the fun to learn more and more about the battle system.
And yeah Xenoblade is a bit like something between Dragon's Dogma, Final Fantasy and Breath of the Wild or something like that.
Think the oroboros have a skill three and you can inherit abilities between classes when you level them up enough.

I got burned out after only two of the routes(Claude and Dimitri's) and never wanted to play the rest of the routes. My PS4 is now dead, and no PS5 in my possession, so who knows when I'll get around to playing Tales of Arise. Have played all the other Tales games. But if you lost interest in Tales of Arise, you might get bored of XB3 too. The Xenoblade and Tales of games might have different gameplay mechanics, but still follow the standards of most JRPGs.
SMTV was a very polarizing game among SMT fans. It was my first SMT game though. Game felt very half-baked despite it being in production hell for so long. Story was not....great. It felt very incomplete in different ways. Gameplay was great though. But If you dislike a turn-based fighting system, I'd say play XB3 first. SMTV is also a lot more challenging, because it's a SMT game, and they are known for being hard. Unless you put it on easy mode.

imo Xenoblade 3 has bring back quite something that being applied in Xenoblade 1 but being totally scrapped out in Xenoblade 2.
The things that I am glad for being brought back are the navigation guide to quest area (instead of the confusing compass in Xenoblade 2, it is now something you can trigger to turn on/off to show the path on the overworld, which is similar with Xenoblade 1 where the path is shown inside the map), the tutorial/guides that can be revisited anytime and multiple save file. The area that we can travel/explore is also designed in a way that is less confusing compare to Xenoblade 2.
Just the combat UI can be confusing if you first experience it, but for me, since I can adapt to the UI in Xenoblade 1 and 2, the UI in Xenoblade 3 is not a big problem to me either.

I found out that Mio is voiced by Esme from Peaky Blinders when my gf was watching it next to me and she realised it.

So basically a single player MMO sized JRPG with MMO combat. Well that sold it to me!

Flyff was a great free mmorpg. Rose was another good one. Haven't played those in over 10 years so I have no idea if they're still online. Lol

The combat is awesome don’t get me wrong. But this entire franchise is a case of : if this was real time combat. Actual action RPG gameplay. This would be one of the biggest games in the world.

I really want to play this and whilst it’s good to know I don’t need to play the first two I really want to. However I’d want them physically and in the UK at least it’s extremely difficult to buy 2 physically and at this point it’s really the only thing holding me back from the series 😞

Xenoblade Chronicles X is the GREATEST game on Wii U, singlehandedly made wii U worth the purchase. I havent purchased every Xenoblade game on the switch and plan to go through them one day, so I will reserve my judgement.
