  • Hello all
In this video I replace the steering drop arm ball joint. I had replaced it previously but the bush inside the arm had worn out and needed replacing in full. This was a PAIN of a job! I really struggled to get everything back together and in the end I had to replace the coil spring with a spring washer.

When I did this job, I had the same problem as you when reassembling the ball joint, I ended up grinding the spring down, which I was not 100% happy with, so for peace of mind I fitted a new drop arm and ball joint.

Good to know that it is not just me who had the same problem. I'm going to keep an close eye on it but I'll probably end up upgrading the ball joint.

Where did you get the metal parts you used when using the bolt to push the old cup out. Or what are they called. It looks like that method makes it so much easier to do that trying to hit it out with a socket and a mallet. 😂😂

If you Google "Land Rover steering drop arm ball joint removal tool" you will find what you need. Part number DA1125. Not cheap but worth it 🙂

Ah yes been there myself several times with my old Defender. Complete pain in the arse. Last time it failed the MOT on this I fitted a Gwyn Lewis Disco style Sumo bar conversion it's just so much better and I haven't had a ball joint go in 15 years.

That sounds like a great conversion, I need to look into it myself as I'm not doing that again!

Worth the effort but only works on Adwest (4 bolt) steering boxes won't fit a Gemmer 6 bolt box.
