- According to the United Nations, 26,000 unaccompanied minors crossed the Mediterranean to Europe last year, most of those coming from sub-Saharan Africa were Gambians.
In the past three years, almost 15,000 people lost their lives trying to reach European shores.
Undeterred, young men and women continue to take this route in what the UN's describes as the biggest humanitarian catastrophe of our times.
The UN estimates the illegal trade of smuggling people to be worth more than $35bn, and it is booming.
Despite joint efforts by police forces from Europe and Africa, few smugglers have been arrested or prosecuted.
Mohammed Lamine Jammeh, also known as L-Boy, help many execute this journey. For many, he is a hero. Families save up for years and take loans in order to send one of their children on this journey.
But who profits from this? Do these young men and women know the risks they are taking? How much do they pay for this journey?
L-Boy, guides us through the business of human trafficking, and explain why travelling to Europe through Libya or the "backway" as it is known here is an open secret.

There’s nothing in Europe, those people must seek the peace and prosperity of their African countries. People think Europe is heaven but it’s the opposite. There no opportunities in Europe. Africans must build and develop their motherland Africa and stop all this stupidity of looking for a good life abroad.

As a gambian,I can tell you this is a societal problem.
A colonial syndrome that makes africans believe in Europe and Europeans.
I will give you an example,a young Gambian can be encouraged by their own family to date euro grandma's and grandpa's,yet if their child goes out with an old gambian,thats blasphemous.
Gambia is not poor,is gambians that believed they are poor.
The only time I ever got hungry was in United kingdom.
When their hostile environment took a bite,sadly this is what they will face in Europe.
They will not be allowed to work,they can't rent,no public funds and not allowed to work.
Africans are not only dying in the rough seas like their enslaved cousins before tthem,but are dying from laws set in Europe to stop them from coming.
Ultimately,only the return of all africans can solve this problem.

Europe needs to give back all the Diamonds gold silver and raw materials they took or pay the proper price for the raw materials then Gambia and other west African countries will not experience poverty in such a severe way in my opinion

Helping poor countries is one thing, however these countries have always been poor. Why didn't they try to enter Europe en masse in the 80's? Because laws worked that said crossing a state border is illegal and punishable. Nowadays there are politicians in power who openly support open borders. There are clearly certain interests behind this paradigm shift. It's in their interests to flood all Western countries with immigrants. However, it certainly will not help improve the living conditions in African and Middle Eastern countries.
