  • In this video I set up a tank for my fire salamanders. Basically, this type of setup is suitable for salamanders and also other terrestrial (and mainly ground-dwelling) amphibians.
    As my former fire salamander setup was already a few years old, it was time to renew the substrate, mosses and bark pieces.
    Information on the setup:
    Tank size: 120 cm x 40 cm x 50 cm.
    Drainage layer: clayballs, about 10 cm high, to prevent waterlogging but still keep the general ground and air humidity at a high level.
    Filter cotton: to prevent soil to fall into the drainage layer.
    Ground layer: mixture of coco ground and forest soil (/top soil),
    "Clean-up-Crew: earthworms, isopods, springtails, snails and more invertebrates.
    Plants: European ivy (Hedera helix), different mosses.
    Other hidings & "decorations": bark pieces, flat stones, leaf litter.
    Water part: 5 L plastic box (Braplast).
    Currently I keep five fire salamanders (Salamandra s. terrestris) in this tank.
    If you have any questions to this setup, feel free to ask! :)

    Wasserteil: 5 L Plastikdose (Braplast).
    Momentan halte ich fünf Feuersalamander (Salamandra s. terrestris) in diesem Becken.
    Falls noch Fragen offen sind, einfach fragen! :)

    I would add horsetail plants to mimic a mini carboniferous forest as giant amphibians were around back then 359 to 299 million years ago.

      I actually have planned horsetails for a setup of one of my Japanese species to mimic bamboo. :D But you're right, would also make a great prehistoric look!

    I've had success keeping tigrinum on a flooded gravel substrate bed filled to about a 1/4 " from the top of gravel with water then a layer of sphagnum moss under there hides. They loved it and thrived. This way is much cleaner and no chance for ingestion of coir. Next build I'll put in a bulkhead plumbed to a filter so water doesnt stagnate and is continually revived with oxygen via flow of filtered water. I don't think you can go wrong with this setup and believe it will work for Fires and many other amphibians.

    • @AquaTerra-Life

      Yes that also sounds like a good and easy setup. For fire salamanders you just have to make sure it's not too wet. But I also keep my juveniles on "flooded" filtermats with different heights, so they can choose their favored humidity.

    Do your salamanders come out often. I know they are nocturnal but if I’m gonna get one I wouldn’t want to not be able to ever see it.
    Your setup was very nice by the way

      My fire salamanders are quite active, also at day. Also, usually at least 2 of 5 come out of their hides when I open the tank to feed them.
      But still, the tank sometimes looks abandoned and you don't see them for hours or sometimes also for days. Terrestrial salamanders sometimes stay in their hides for quite some time.

    • @Dk-li9tn
      @Dk-li9tn 6 лет назад +2

      Oposum thats tiny. I use a 60×30×50 for one salamander. When I had 3 I used a 100×50×40 tank. But if your salamanders are juveniles it should work perfectly fine

    Brilliant video iv just got a fire salamander my self what lamp are u useing whats the best way to collect new declaration ie wood etc and clean it do you have any links plz plz plz thanks for the video

      @AquaTerra-Life  6 лет назад

      Thank you!
      For the salamanders no lamp at all is necessary, as they like it dark. I turn on the light only a few hours per day for the plants. It's a common aquarium neon tube. You can pour ho water on wood or put it in the oven, or you can freeze it. I usually don't do that, as I want to keep the microorganisms living inside wood etc.

    Hi, i don't plan on breeding fire salamanders, so i wonder if they can live alone? Or it is better to keep them in pairs or small groups?

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  4 года назад

      Hi, if you don't want to breed them it's totally fine to keep one alone. They don't need companions.

  • @scope_with_hope
    @scope_with_hope 6 лет назад

    Would you recommend having a friend or another similar species that is friendly for companionship

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  6 лет назад +5

      Salamanders don't make "friends". Most salamanders are solitary or just hide under the same spot as other conspecifics, when the parameters there are best. So no, I don't recommend that. However, it is always nice to keep a pair or a small group, if the tank is big enough. Because then you can breed them and produce captive bred animals, which help to stop catching wild animals.

    What about bottom of the tank? Is there water? Or you put keramzit stones directly on the glass?

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  6 лет назад

      Yes, the clay balls make the bottom layer which is positioned directly on the glass.

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  6 лет назад

      But water can also stagnate in this layer.

    Great setup! I have mine living in a 60 lts terrarium with some springtails currently, but since i got it recently , i was just wondering how could i keep a low temperature during summer? (I live in norther italy, on the alps where i actually got the salamander, so she already fits in with the climate).
    Any tips for a healthy sal? :D

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks!
      Actually my tank is located in the basement, where it's always quite cool and perfect for my salamanders.
      For some tanks a fan can help to decrease the temperature a bit by evaporation. Also, placing frozen water bottles or ice blocks (in plastic boxes or bags) helps to decrease the temperature.

  • @evaneds

    Is this the kind of setup that all salamander are supposed to have? I want to learn. How did you prepare the moss for the tank? Did you wash it?

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  5 лет назад

      There are also species that have different needs and thus also need a different setup. But in general this suitable for many species. For some salamanders you would e.g. need to use a different ground substrate or keep it more wet or dry.
      I use the moss just as I get it from the forest, I usually don't wash it. If you use bought moss or plants from an (outside) area where pesticides etc. are used or amphibian diseases occur, one should of course at least wash them very good. You can also use H2O2 to disinfect plants.

      Pet shops that sell aquarium stuff should have filter cotton.
