Freni was a great lyric soprano. Her singing spinto or dramatic roles as this one is questionable. Voice is too small and too bright/lyric in quality. She wisely left this role. Typical Karajan ideas to use the wrong singers…
she was very good in Manon Lescaut- which I believe is a spinto role. Not sure if Tatyana is considered a spinto role- probably more full lyric. She was also very good in don Carlo. But not in her recording of Forza which was hard to listen to. Karajan wanted her to sing Turandot but fortunately she said absolutely NO.
