    I am an American and I remember watching this the day after it happened and I just CRIED with joy because it was so beautiful! I don't care what country you're from, I can appreciate good athleticism and good sportsmanship and all the hard work and dedication it took to get there! And THAT'S what the Olympics are supposed to be all about, not about politics and all that other garbage.

    Maybe it wasn't the technically strongest performance I have ever seen, but in terms of elegance she's unbeatable. Not only is she flexible but she's flexibly elegant - she uses her own body not to show that she can bite her foot but to show the music and harmony of the program. She's a genius :)

  • @gk891
    @gk891 10 лет назад +108

    The most impressive thing about this performance for me was her spiral. Just a few deep strokes and she's across the rink in one go. Such amazing edge control and she makes an absolutely gigantic pattern that goes from board to board. People ooh and aah over Sasha Cohen's spiral and although Cohen had incredible extension and flexibility, the other 2 aspects (edge control and the pattern she makes on the ice) doesn't come anywhere close to Arakawa's. Great performance and a well deserved gold medal.

    • @MsJubjubbird
      @MsJubjubbird 10 лет назад +24

      yup. people don't realise a spiral is not just about flexibility, but it's about stability and speed. people always used to complain about yuna's spirals as well but both these ladies could do them on a tightrope complete with edge changes with no wobbles with their hands in all sorts of positions (often skaters put one hand on their supporting leg for balance) and be across the rink after a couple of strides before you could blink.

  • @cocodobard4243
    @cocodobard4243 10 лет назад +242

    To me, today's style of skating is just jumps and spins with stroking added, I abhor it. But this, this is pure elegance. Shizuka Arakawa, Sasha Cohen, and Yuna-Kim, are the people I regard as the greatest skaters of the early 2000's.

    • @RakuRadio
      @RakuRadio 10 лет назад +15

      Indeed. There are many talented skaters now, but the programs are too "programmed" for points and base scores. It's like strategic skating and the music and artistry is by-the-by. Buttle, Rippon and a few others are able to choreograph around this, but so many "figure jumping" programs now.

    • @cocodobard4243
      @cocodobard4243 10 лет назад +11

      I know, as a figure skater, whenever I have a new program, it's so difficult to do something different. Sometimes it even feels like there's barely anything but jumps. It seems that everyone today argues about skating not being a sport, it's too cutesy, and it's not competitive. The USFSA thinks that they've fixed it by scoring by the new judging system and frankly, disregarding anything but jumps in a program, but really all they have done is increased the cuteness, and the non sport attitude of the public. It's simply less interesting then it was just 8 years ago. I can tell you right now that the sport was much more competitive and fair back then then it is now.

    Shizuka Arakawa is the best Lady's skater ever. Perfect mix of athleticism and elegance, beauty. We are so proud of her. She is the symbol of Japanese women strength, beauty, quiet determination, hard work, and intellect. Perfect 10. Almost decade later, we still remember her beauty. No fist pumps. No fake performance. No drama. Not like any other nation or any other women.

    Going back and watching this performance nearly has me in tears. It is so beautiful. She actually holds her positions! I miss miss miss spirals. That was always one of the highlights of skating programs for me. They don’t do them anymore. Programs are too fast and frantic with all of the footwork and transitions in and out of jumps. I can’t believe this was 15 years ago.

    • @Dylvente
      @Dylvente Год назад

      The beginning of the end for me was when they removed the spiral as a required element from the short program. (I believe in the 2010-11 season.) I am trying to get back into watching figure skating again but watching quad with hand over head, quad with hand over head, quad with hand over head with some "frantic" (your words) moves in between just isn't doing it for me. I hate today's footwork. Here, in 2006, it had become more intricate but still traveled fast. Then it became so intricate that it's just tedious to watch. A showcase of "these are the moves I can do" but with no meaning or purpose beyond collecting points. Do you remember Yuka Sato's footwork? I miss that kind of footwork. Incredibly skillful but also exciting to watch!

I was actually watching the reaction of the photographers, especially after she landed her triple salchow-double-double combo, and I can tell they knew she was going to win. They've covered these events for so long that they're probably the better judge than those sitting in the judge's seat.

    wow in those days a triple triple seems to be such a huge deal. even a 3T-3S was huge. and when Yuna came out with the 3T-3L it was considered the most spectacular thing ever. these days a triple triple is unofficially compulsory from junior level up. 3T-3L is a staple for the top 10- juniors and seniors.

      I get what you mean. Slutskaya was the first to do it. But it wasn't in every program until the last two years. Yuna was the only one doing it in 2010 so it was still pretty rare. Then everyone seemed to follow her.
