Started listening in 1975. A neighbor had an album and I fell in love with his music; I was 24 yrs old then and not a country fan. He’s music is beautiful and I have been listening ever since. This is 4/2/23
Only a few of us have found this page. That's what's wrong with this world. So many Fords, so few Rolls Royces. T'aint just the writing, it's also that haunting voice, and Thanks to Elektra for the production. They wouldn't let you make records like this in Nashville then. Ultimate artist, wonderful friend. Never to be forgotten.
We must always remember the good times, it will ease your troubled mind..another masterpiece from the master himself..we're swept away from sadness, clinging to your sweet memories..rest in peace and love MICKEY NEWBURY..thanx for sharing Marianne..Godbless.
Oh Stephan, such a kind comment, Thank you so much!...I admit that Mickey's music means the world to me and it often moves me to tears as he puts so much emotion and feeling into each song he sings..I think Mickey Newbury was one of the finest songwriters we have had and he was blessed with a beautiful and powerful voice that made him a great but ever so humble performer...Thank you my friend, so glad you enjoyed the song ♥~ :) ~Marianne...
One of his finest songs...beautiful. I played this continually for a long time after I lost my husband around the same time as Mickey died. Incidentally he was my husband's favourite singer along with Johnnie Cash.
In 2021 still listening to Mickey. Started at the end of the 60's when my brother in law showed up with an album of this great artist. He also brought me a signed one after he visited a concert of Mickey in the UK.
Oh...Your lovely, sweet comment warmed my heart Marylou!! Thank you!...This is indeed one of Mickey's many most beautiful songs !!! So glad that you did get the album and that you still enjoy the music as much as you did then...You are so very welcome and I hope that you'll enjoy Mickey's album for many more years to come!!!! Thank you for you ever so sweet comment!! Take Good Care!!! ~Marianne...
You choose his best version of this song here and the images you choose were beyond beautiful. Hard to pick Mickey at his best, but this sure comes close.
@ 1:46 my heart starts melting....by the end of the song I'm a heap of jello!!....Hi Evan...So glad you're a Mickey Fan!! Well it would be nice to know what Mickey Newbury song would get the most votes!! :) I think it would be San Francisco Mabel Joy ;) but hard to tell of course!! Thanks so much for taking the time to write a lovely comment! I appreciate it very much.... ~Marianne...
You just feel the emotion that Mickey puts in the song...Yes.. So Beautiful Mr Jack...So glad you liked it my friend and that it is new to you...Have a lovely evening..Big smile for you :) ~Marianne...
Dear The Geofflame: Actually, Elektra really didn't give Mickey much support when it came to the production of this album. He told me they only supplied him with a micro budget, which meant that he had to call in a lot of musician friend helpers and partially explains the LP's sparse production sound. In Mickey's case, he managed to turn his budget restriction into a plus -- as the sparse sound actually enhances the lonely mood underscoring the tracks. One of the music industry's greatest tragedies was the Mickey was never elevated commercially to the stature he deserved as a brilliant, deeply evocative and moving singer and songwriter. Mickey only scored one semi-hit as a vocalist: "American Trilogy," which had the misfortune of coming out at the same time Don McLean was scoring with "American Pie." Some people got the songs confused. Ironically, perhaps Mickey's greatest achievement as a recording artist could be found on the flip side of "American Trilogy" -- his haunting story song "San Francisco Mabel Joy." Eventually Mickey left Elektra and his Elektra album masters wound up in the hands of the ABC Hickory lbel, which was later bought out by Universal. Universal owns "Remember The Good," "American Trilogy,"" "San Francisco Mabel Joy," "Sweet Memories," etc. now along with most of the rest of Newbury's best work but isn't really doing anything with them as they consider Mickey Newbury to be a forgotten artist.
Thank you so much Stewart...I know for sure that you are one of the few that will feel Mickey's music the way it should be felt... if that makes sense to you!! He is my all time greatest performer...I respect him and his music so much.... Your comment made my day...Thank you my friend :) ~Marianne...

Marianne I agree with you . It is rare to hear an artist show such an emotional register as Mickey does.

Musically: A masterpiece of its own! From the beginning to the end ...there's not one single repetition of the melody ...
Simply the best
