    15:05 respect the analogy regarding 'it's OK" for actors to rehearse/sport people to train - and it's ok to rework a part of the image. Nice.

    It would be great if the tool could be attached to one's eyeglasses.

    Hi Tom
    Have watched a couple of your videos and am thankful they are so informative yet simple and easy to follow.
    You give even an almost novice like myself the confidence to give this a go; it’s been 20 years since my artistic side was kicking about!
    I too strive to open the gate for people to gain ability to express themselves; in a slightly different way as I work with intellectually disabled people where communication is key.
    i.e: Accessibility.
    Have always been a strong believer that we express ourselves best through talent 🙏🏻

    Very cool idea. Is the system adjustable for larger paintings? It looks like a copyists dream. Using a photo would be a good way to test ones knowledge of painting. Looking forward to future videos. James Gurney suggested your tool.

    Wow! Magic revealed! So cool! I’ve just recently learned of the comparator mirror and found your channel while searching the internet for more info. Painting with oils has always seemed so daunting to me, but your method really makes it seem attainable.

      Andy, it's so nice to hear you say that. I've been using the comparator mirror
      in classrooms since 2014 but most of my lockdown has been spent inventing a way to share that magic with everyone. Keep in touch and don't forget to sign up through our website www.paintinglab.com

    Just discovered your channel. Really great work here! That Sargent piece you showed at 8:56 actually hangs in my local museum and I’ve stared at it in wonder many times. Always wanted to try to do a proper copy of it sometime. It was really cool when the museum actually got its hands on the dress the woman wore as well and you were able to see to an extent what Sargent saw when he painted it. Anyways excellent video and fascinating topic. I’d really be interested to try one of these mirrors.

    Good for practicing brush strokes and colors and variety and texture and detail elimination. A great tool to ensure proportions are correct.
    However, working from photos is different than working from life, so don't let it become a crutch by relying upon it.
    Comparator mirror best served to practice several aspects, seems amazing really. But you don't get the practice of composition and design and perspective etc... It also will limit the development of the ability to compare, since it offers the comparison for the artist.
    For many artists, that won't matter, but Sargent created originals from the perspective of an artist, where originals from the perspective of a camera has a different feel. Photography is another great tool, but overly leveraging can create a crutch as well, ask me how I know. I can copy a photo like a madman! But then I realized the depths of composition and design and realized I wasn't creating an orchestration at all, I was just playing an orchestration that already existed in a slightly different way. IMO

      Hi there, thanks for such a thorough comment. Speaking as a professional artist I agree whole heartedly with everything you said. I think the definition between ART and realistic painting is the crux of this matter. What I've been discovering is that Art remains inaccessible to many who struggle with the trick of making things look like the world. If you look at my recent video about Viktor Lowenfeld you will see that his career long study of creative development confirmed the same. This is really the essence of painting lab and of my work but this only gets seen when folks such as yourself raise points like this so, many many thanks. Tomas

    Isn't this the same device that Tim Jenison used to paint his "Vermeer" in the BBC documentary?

    • @paintinglabofficial
      @paintinglabofficial  3 года назад

      Yes that's broadly right. Tim's Vermeer is actually a feature film released through Sony pictures. Tim is a close personal friend and has been intimately involved in the development of this project though it should be said that because our aims are quite different we are not the same project. Thanks for your comment, it is always important to give Tim credit for his brilliant work and the essential premise that makes my work possible.

    Very helpful to see the process... I especially the concept of the base layer. How long did you wait for it to completely dry?

    • @paintinglabofficial
      @paintinglabofficial  3 года назад +1

      Hi Tim, thanks for all your wonderful comments. To answer this question directly I left the base layers to dry for 4 days.

      It looks like the mirror image is the same size as the one being painted? Can the system be adjusted for size? Looks like a copyists dream. Using a photograph would be challenging because the painter has to create the pallette for the painting. Very cool idea. Will watch the progress of the system.
