Rough, overgrown tracks on Mass Coastal Watuppa Branch - 6/2024

- In this video we follow Mass Coastal train MC-4 down the Watuppa Branch in New Bedford and Dartmouth, MA. With the summer almost here the adjacent brush is now encroaching on the right of way and that is evident in this video. The line was acquired in December 2023 when MC purchased the Bay Colony Railroad . The track is rough from years of minimal maintenance by previous owners Penn Central, Conrail, and CSX who eventually handed off this part of the line to Bay Colony in the early 2000's. BCLR was able to fix up some of the track during their ownership but it was still far off from the level and straight track of the mainlines. MC has begun some trackwork on the line so stay tuned for future updates on their progress.

Yep, definitely rough! Good job, once again capturing branch line service.
You really could get seasick on this line! At least it is active and not abandoned.
anybody seasick on this trip?
Great video! I really enjoy the way you cover branchlines in your area. Really like some of the telephoto shots especially the night one. I also appreciate the graphics with location info. Keep up the good work.
Some great footage.
Another great catch of Mass Coastal
And to think Conrail years ago ran on that track delivering beer to colonial beverage
Just like watching the videos of the ND&W.
An awesome catch, thanks. Is this Penn Central 2.0? Lol
great work on all video editing / camera and audio
This used to be such a vibrant line at one point in time, now it's just fallen into disrepair
Rock & roll railroading!
Wing and a Prayer Railroad. If we can't get to ya, nobody else will either. : )
Wow! I got 50-year-old Lionel train track in better condition than that!
I was wondering how DBS got their shipments! Nice to see active sidings! Wish they would rebuild the one out to Gold Medal Bakery on Bay Road.
Very expensive equipment going over this track is nuts.need to replace some ties too get more track stability. Looks like if they went faster, they would tip over from the rocking.
It's really not as bad as it looks. The BCLR track supervisor there considered it 'ugly track, not bad track'. It does meet FRA Excepted track standards which in reality means that as long as it holds the guage it's ok to use at 10 MPH.
Looks like 5MPH track to me 🫰🏼
Surely, the track appears not much different from that of the Napoleon, Defiance and Western Railroad, in its beginnings of operations. Watch one of the earlier videos of them. (Yeah! I understand that telephotography of railroad tracks will highlight horrendous any track conditions.)
Supposedly, that track is former Maumee Route trackage and was built across swampland. The ND&W is making headway as to getting their tracks upgraded, little by little, but, with some effort and incentive to thrive.
I’m curious, do “they” send down a gage car ahead of time, to reduce the probability the engine will derail ?
Bet that siding switch is frozen shut
That is definitely a Hooterville!
Thanks for watching!
Maybe the new owners will fix the deferred maintenance line and get it up to track speed.
Neat night shots.
It looked like a Maumee and western video. You guys want to become Mass Coastal and western?
I believe some track replacement is needed on this stretch of line! If I was the conductor or engineer,I think probably would have to puke at some point! If the old Reed rd. crossing has signals, time to get them working!
ALL of the crossing signals were working when Bay Colony left. No idea why MC has issues with them.
@@alwhalen3488 yea that's weird! Always liked watching bay colony but atleast they're still running the line. Looking for more landish industrial park videos....I enjoy them too! 👍👍👍👍
Maybe they should fix the tracks and have this used for passenger service to North Dartmouth or even further west
Wow, I'd say MC NEEDS to do a track rehabilitation project on those tracks! (Those freight engines and cars displayed the "rocking" that most train videos from the 1970's had shown) These tracks look almost as bad as the Milwaukee Road's tracks, just before they went bankrupt in 1977. Do these tracks on the Watuppa Branch still have the New Haven's 107 Pound rail? I know the crossings have heavier rail, as there's "compromise bars" joining the lighter rail to the heavier rails.
New Haven 100 lb rail on most of the line. Some 107 in spots. Crossings have 132 or 136.
@@alwhalen3488 Thanks Al, I thought the crossings had probably 115 Pound rail. (I didn't know there's "compromise bars" for 100 - 132 rail or 107 - 132) In my neck of the woods, the rail line has mainly 115 rail, with the oldest sections still with the B&O's 100 pound rail from the 1930's or early '40s. The most recently installed tracks are with 132 "Ribbon Rail".
Hey sweet video! are there certain days this job runs? or an as-needed basis?
The Bells have a catchy beat
Time for new Rail
Weebles Express
Miss the old south coast
Wonder what they’re doing with the locomotives
Huh??? Are they out of business?
Will Shawmut Ave ever get gates?
It just got upgraded to LED lights, a new cantilever and a second bell about a week before MC took over. Not a busy enough street or rail line to warrant gates.
50 years of deferred maintenance
Wanna’ see rough? Watch some of the videos of Indian trains. It’s a miracle they can stay on the tracks.
EXACTLY... and for what it's worth, the track seen here certainly could use work but it's not that bad... like you said, there IS worse out there... WAY worse
Not fixed yet? Gee, I thought Spencer Gwendolin was gone...
🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
What keeps that engine on the track's.
Why two locos?
Newbie question. Why are the rail/tracks so bowed and twisted please?
When is the new Fall River New Bedford Line Starting Up. Is This Rail Line Part Of It.
No, this portion is freight only, believe it’s set to begin operation next year
How many customers at the Watuppa branch?
3 but only 2 see regular service
bouncy bouncy
I hope one day they get the funds from the federal government to improve the the trackage and the railbed
Is this America or rural Asia ? Those lines are way out of gauge
Que bonitos árboles donde pueden comer frutas los maquinistas
Its simple. When you are delivering 10- 20 cars a week ( guessing ) your railroad can NOT be a 70 mph high speed carrier. You can still work at 10 mph.
Cannot understand how something like this can get a license to operate.
How do those tracks get to be in such a state of disrepair? Whose job is it to maintain them. Can't believe this is the 21st century and we have railroads looking like they were laid in the civil war era.
Depends. Railroad if owned by them. If leasing from state, they might have to pay for it. Could be railroad would have to get FRA loans to upgrade track, pay it back
Why don't they fix their railroads I think the ties need replaced.
its 2024 . why dont they fix the track. its dangerous even at 5 miles per hour
Money
Dan pena ajena con esas vías.
Playing pretty fast and loose on such badly maintained track! Accident looking to happen!
Isnt that against the law.? Any law?😅
Man that's sketchy as hell.
the railway looks like s**t
