I was in the first year to pay £9k a year, and I actually agree with them. I don't have to pay a penny back until I'm earning £21k, it doesn't count as a debt so no knock-on effect on mortgage, loans etc., and it enables universities to open more places to poorer students
As a citizen of korea i have to say this. Former president of korea Lee MK says ' if you lower the tuition fees, quality of education will diminish.' This is the spirit of Korea!
I am actually annoyed with how funny they think it is tbh, these are the people running the government, deciding peoples benefits, living situations etc. This is serious stuff and all they can do is be smug at how one person didn't deliver on his promise, I like politics but politicians nowadays make me sick.
If you were him how would YOU have done it differently? You've made a promise and you have 2 choices: -Say yes to the Tories (they are the majority anyway) -Go out of power and back into obscurity (The Tories will find another Lib-Dem to replace him anyway) If you stay, you'll at least have some say in the government. If you go, your influence in the government and policy-making will be 0. Nil.
Over what? Labour told voters of my generation "we will not introduce Top Up fees and have legislated to prevent them". Not only did they break that promise, Blair boasts of having done so in his biography. Unforgivable.
Tim Patmore Like I said, this is the ONE time I agree with Labour and that is with them saying how much of a two-faced liar Nick Clegg is. I'm certainly not a Labour supporter, but they certainly aren't wrong with what they say about Nick Clegg here.
eurgh it's so pathetic, Why do we have a government that jeer and rant at each other like children in a playground? The people of the UK don't give a toss for their publicity speeches in the House of Commons or the sugar-coated crap from Clegg about it being in their 'wider ambition' to get students to university. Why is it so difficult to have an honest, hard-working politician that gets things done,? I do not know.
Good thing i live and study in Scotland , however i do feel for the students south of the border.I cant full understand the tories plan here they're plan is to reduce the expenditure on unemployment and keep the money in the hands of the rich however if you reduce the number of people in higher education because lets face who has the money needed to go to university in terms of fees. As a result of a drop in numbers your going to have less people in top jobs i.e. doctor , lawyer , accounting etc. The number of academic staff will be reduced because their is not a a need for them to be employed to teach the students who aren't there, less people paying high tax bracket amount due to low education and finally more people on the unemployment because they don't have the required education or skills to get good jobs or any job for that matter. Everyone is entitled to a good free education it shouldn't matter who you are, where your from or your bank balance. Its easy for the torie front bench to impose all this as they has all got there degrees and been to private schools.
In Scotland, cause there are no fees, the number of Scottish students that can attend them is capped, with no limits on students from elsewhere in the UK and overseas who still have to pay the full tuition fees, so it's hardly plain sailing north of the border. Also, in 2019, Blair's artificial target of fifty percent of students to go to university (which is rightly being scrapped now) was met and exceeded for the first time, so it's not true to say tuition fees has led to fewer folk attending uni.
Labour trying to point score here. They spent all the money even left a fucking note saying all the monies gone then complain about cuts. Totally deluded
I was going to offer a counter to your argument, then I realised I couldn't be arsed. I realise I should have kept that to myself, but where's the fun it that?

Fake Name what degree did you get
If he had won a majority, he would have put in place his manifesto. He didn't, so he couldn't. Coalition entails compromise.
W. Gaby False, they did not have to vote for tuition fees rise, despite being in a coalition, they had the ability to opt out.
he was a muppett then and still is now
He could have abstained or voted against, but no, he voted for trebling them. That's why students hate him.
@@alexander92179 You'll be pleased to know that seven years later, I agree with you completely!
@@sirwillgaby if he voted against or simply abstained, the backlash wouldn't have been that great at all.

Labour have a bloody cheek, when they were the ones who introduced top up fees for University back in 2003.
Cwmbran1984 they wouldn’t have tripled them or removed crucial maintenance grants
That Freshers Week bit was fantastic.
I think he set them back 50 years in my mind
Clegg could have made this a red line issue when joining the coalition. I assume other issues mattered more!
What a disgraceful decision to treble tuition fees, wouldn't be surprised if it reached £10,000 soon.
Luckily they have been capped for now.

@thejacobnall1994 They are poppies. They are worn to commemorate soldiers who have died in war
Naughty boy Nick.
Why do they wear those flower badges sometimes? What does it symbolize?
The one time I truly agree with Labour

Fair enough - I think you have a point, though they seem just as bad as each other to me.
What a disgrace this clegg is even his own party are laughing at him here
£27 000 for an average degree.
How long will it take to pay that off?
Don't forgot in addition maintainence loans so it's about 36k for a three year course

In one swift move he set the lib dems back 10 years.
