Hi Austin! Thank you for your comment and interest in the etude.
When appaers "x" you can simply hit one castanet against the other produzing a "crispy" sound.
This technique is based in the "choque", movement very commun in traditional spanish castanets.I hope clarified your question. Enjoy it and have fun!
