Most enjoyable and the boys obviously enjoyed themselves.

I do not think we should be sad about such things Thomas. The voices are excellent. The performance was very beautiful.

@@roderickcampbell2105 It's normal for children to have fun. What I am criticising is the appalling lack of artistic ambition shown by the management of the Vienna Boys Choir over the last twenty years or more, of which this video is an example. I even consider that the decline began after Hans Gillesberger, even if Uwe-Christian Harrer has maintained a certain quality. Things began to deteriorate seriously with Peter Marschik. I don't share your assessment of the vocal level of the current Vienna Boys Choir. The vocal quality in the days of Gillesberger and Harrer was so much better.

@@thomassavary5764 I respect your comment very much. From a young age I grew up listening the Vienna's Boy Choir. The standards are very high. I did
see some recent behavior in the choir that disappointed me. In my opinion some of the choir members did not belong there. But I loved the music all the same.

@@roderickcampbell2105 Thanks for your reply. Of course, they are not bad per se, and the VBC remains well above average in its category. It’s just that they used to be so much better under Gillesberger and Harrer. Listen for example to the St John’s Passion (1965), to Mozart’s Requiem by Gillebserger, to Biber’s Requiem (1968), to Steffani’s Stabat Mater (1970, at last available on CD in the 500th Anniversary Box). Or to this formidable boy alto in BWV 197 : watch?v=hjeKXRYlvrI.
However, as I wrote, what I deplore most is the lack of artistic ambition. There are so many wonderful works of early music waiting to be recorded by boys’ voices as they should be in a historically-informed performance.
As for the behaviour of some choir members, I cannot tell. Maybe a symptom of Western decline - though I know that the boys come from all over the world.
