I’m interested in a circuit tracer and looking at different manufacturers including Ideal, but they are very expensive. With this one from Amprobe, how do you handle receptacles in old houses that don’t have a ground? And does it work well in homes with plaster walls which of course are thicker than drywall? And since you’ve had a chance to use it, what are your thoughts of using it in the field. Great video by the way and Happy New Year to you and your family! Just subscribed!
I would recommend using a Tone and Probe ( Fluke ) it’s much cheaper and it works great 👍🏿 I have one and it worked every time. Now as far as a Wire Tracer The New AMPROBE Model 6010 is about the cheapest you’ll find and manufactured by a well known company. Now Extech just came on the market with their version of a Wire Tracer , but it’s a rebranded MASTECH. For what you want to use it for without breaking the bank I’ll go with the Tone and Probe , Fluke is my favorite, but they are other companies that make them. Good luck 🍀.
We clamp the cold water pipe off a close sink, or somewhere closest cold water line. Your still shooting darts in the dark with this thing- hit and miss. inconsistence reliability is the MAJOR issue with this product for especially for $1200 for the clamp model and transmitter -receiver
I really enjoy these videos. I just purchased an Amprobe AT-6010 kit from amazon. I am hoping to learn how to use it and trace romex wire from an outlet that doesn't have current on it.
Thanks for watching Lance, now the wire tracer it’ll take some getting used to. Make sure you READ the instructions CAREFULLY after a few trials and error you’ll eventually get the hang of it. Good luck 🍀
These things for $750-$1200 are tools to help you get into right direction. They are cumbersome to learn and take time. I have not got it down perfectly but when you play with it and experiment it with your problems after a few hours, it helps eliminate some unknowns. I always say I'm going to sell of and its a joke, but from time to time it throws us a bone that helps to put us in the right direction. He mentioned the secret but didn't tell us. Maybe it was start off with low sensitivity ?pretty common sense to start out low. I rate these things hit or miss and the ideal one sucks ive had a little better luck with this one aiming me in the right direction. Its just hard to use, you have to really play with it and suck up the price and use it as a tax deduction but sometimes it gets you LUCKY I think. End game I think you really have to take the TIME AND HAVE PATIENCE or your going to want to throw it in the nearest trash. Scale 1-10? I give it a 5. You have a little better chance finding problems with it when you need help troubleshooting. Wish he would had showed more TIPS and SECRETS to use this tool to its MAX potential. That's the problem. How do you really get it to deliver religiously to trace circuits breakers which it BS it never finds the breaker half the time Its faster to kill the power and start working on the circuit in residential. So it couldn't find the circuit breaker but it did trace a wire from one outlet to another that I assumed was the other side of it . BFD. I then was more confident that they were the same ends of the wire so I could wire it without the possibility of blowing up. Wiring tracing it is hit and miss. It almost never finds circuit breakers don't believe that bs. and would take too much time to play with it to find the breakers if we did find one of 10. ITs a last resort tool that has potential. The amp probe wire attachment is total garbage, never finds the wire you clamp it onto, so if you want to toss $ out the window to try this aggravating tool, buy it at $750 without the $300 clamp on wire accessory as I ahve had zero luck with clamping on a wire at the panel to find the circuit because it failed to scan the circuit with swiping the breakers with the transmitter/receiver and find the correct breaker. So i had to open panel and clamp every line it could be and it wasted alot of time. If you want to try it you have to learn how to use it in YOUR situation and the print is very small in the directions so we had it reinlarged at a printer, ya $100 type set fee. It has very confusing modes so you really have to use it everyday to remember the codes to trace, find cb, find opens and shorts. we Simply just F W it until we get some sort of a hit but its really a roll of the dice at the end Day.
Victor, I understand your frustration with this tool. Because I have/had some of the same experiences that you’ve had. When I purchased my wire tracer I caught it on sale through Amazon Prime for $340. without the clamp. I had an extra clamp from my Fluke 289 . Since I purchased my wire tracer I only used it three times and I made sure I included it in my billing to the customer to get my money 💰 back. It’s not a GREAT TOOL, , but you’re absolutely right it is better than the IDEAL WIRE TRACER . And through trial and error it takes a lot to get use to. Another thing that you mentioned that I found to be true the Amprobe wire tracer isn’t worth $700 . Thanks Victor for your thoughts I enjoyed the reading 🤔.

@@TheElectriciansToolChannel I don't think you can use Fluke on live circuits
Did the current clamp work to induce the signal?
Yes and No , it seems to work better when I use the NEMA plug or clamp on to the wire(s).
