- in this video, I explain how to hookup and set up the FREE zello app, so you can use your GMRS two-way radio on the internet! You can use a laptop or desktop computer! The computer will need internet for this to work!

as for cables, you have to check to see what your radio uses 3.5mm and/or 2.5mm plugs, look up your radio on the internet to find out.

it doesnt work and when it does you can barely hear my voice and their is buzzing sounds
i know it will work because i use it and many others use it too. It sounds like maybe you have a bad cable? And/or you need to adjust your sound setting. Did you select your sound card in zello? I found it was best to uses a USB sound card because built-in sound card sounded awful on zello!
hi does zello still has the free desktop version like you are using? the one always keeps popping when i download is the zello work version which is paid. :(

hello, i was gifted a baofeng uv5r by a friend and i thought i'd try to hook it up to zello pc, i downloaded the free zello desktop app ( not zello work ) but i cannot sign in . i get an error either saying no internet connection or uknown error . does the desktop app still work ? i also tried creating a new account through the desktop app doesn't work either. i made sure the app has internet access through my firewall and everything , so i'm confused. can anyone help ? thak you.
Sorry, i didn't see this message in till now. Yes, the desktop is still working just fine. Are you behind a proxy? Or your firewall is blocking the ports zello need too.
Why would I want to do this when I can just install the app on. A phone tablet or computer?
There are times when cell service won't work in an area, (in a valley) this will let you "patch" communication to that area using a two-way radio (on top of a hill that leads to that valley) and if the other person don't have two-way radio he can be patched thru from an area that has cell services using his phone 🙂
@@GMRStwowayradio You obviously have internet at the laptop location so for this to be beneficial, the person without cell coverage (in the valley) would also need to be outside wifi range and therefor not able to use wifi calling. Are these radios better than an outdoor wifi access point as far as range? I guess they could be if you have a nice antenna setup outside the shack. I just wonder how a directional wifi access point would compare to the radio's coverage because a wifi access point would be so much easier to setup and would allow for clean zello or wifi calling. Interesting setup!
@@ThWind81 - yes handhelds can do 5 watts of power and mobile and repeater can do 50 watts of power. also keep in mind wifi freqs 2.5 and 5ghz don't travel as far/as well as GMRS freqs can.
@@GMRStwowayradio Nice. This could really solve comms issues for a lot of people in remote locations! I saw some Zello capable PTT handhelds for around $60 that could be used by people who can't afford a cell phone but have access to public wifi. I know it would be limited to other Zello users but it's something. Interesting stuff.

Great video. Makes it simple to do. I am going to give it a shot. I wonder if I use my handheld on low power will it charge when needed if I leave it on the charger all the time.
it's best to check with the manufacture on that some charges can not handle the current draw even it on low TX or check to see if your model has a battery Eliminator for your model.

your not clear on cables , so are both cables mono and the ground isolator placement? is the ground isolator on the mic or speaker path?
Sorry about that, Every radio is a little different but mono cables and isolator on the speaker out. You can always switch it to the mic if it causes problems on speaker out. But if I recall, speaker out should work with no problems.
Mic to mic, speaker to speaker correct?
@@whizardmagicstreaming2369radio speaker out to mic in on computer. The speaker out on computer to mic in on radio. Then adjusts volumes for best sound. I hope that helps

Will this work to connect any midland radio to the internet using Zello without the radio being repeater capable?
Yes, as long as the radio has VOX. If it doesn't then you will need a circuit to control it with zello.

Great video! Do I need to worry about stereo and mono connections? The computer speaker out and noise suppressor adapter are both stereo. In contrast, the radio speaker out is mono. Also, the mics inputs are mono too. Thanks!
Thanks and Hummm if I recall right, I think I had used both types mono or stereo, and it worked just fine.
@@GMRStwowayradio So you do you have the repeater's squelch tone feeds back to Zello as a separate transmit? I use stereo, not mono. Should I try mono cables?
@@yfellow2008 - if I am using a handheld as a "repeater" then no, because i am only using one freqs like some of my videos show. as for a real repeater, I don't have that problem but i know some people that have that problem. if you can turn the squelch tone off in the repeater setting.
Can this be done with a Digirig instead and use RTS instead of VOX?
humm maybe?? Sorry, i don't know what a Digirig is. But i have other videos on how to hook it up using a DB9 which has the RTS on it too.
Is there any way to increase the range on a GMRS radio using Zello?
No, not radio to radio. The only way to increase radio to radio range is antenna height and good coax cable and a good antenna too!
So the mic on my computer is picking up everything, I can't figure out how to get it fixed. Can you help me out?
When you plug in your two-way radio to the computer, that should disable the built-in mic. It's not disabling it, is this what you mean?

@@I_loved_the_90s ok you will have to disable it manually what Windows version are you using? Also, by plugging in the mic cable using the jacks if it's not disabling the built-in mic, you may have a bad or dirty jacks on the computer. Does the mic jack work? Even tho you hear the built-in mic, can you hear audio when it's plug in too?
@@GMRStwowayradio I think I figured it out, I tried a different laptop (both windows 10) and it was doing the same thing. I was using the wrong aux cable, I switched it out and it seems to be working now. I just need to get the VOX setting correct now Fingers crossed LOL.

Is there a Linux version of the software available so I can use a Raspberry Pi instead of a PC or laptop to hook the radio to?

also i know some people are installing TINY windows 11 on a Raspberry 4. I haven't try it yet but it's an idea 🙂

No, the range will be the same!! Meaning radio to radio range will be the same.
I have tried to register on your site numerous times to see the download link for the software, but I have never received the confirmation email so I can log in.

why not just get a poc radio instead?
Many reasons, but mainly I don't have one, and this is a way to do it with radios that are not poc radios and using it this way a person can run many programs that a poc radio can't run like channel id software, etc🙂
A POC could be a simpler and cost effective solution.
yes, BUT you can't run other programs like you can when using a computer ( like date & time, repeater id, etc)

You may be able to. I can't say for sure, I don't have that here to test it.

This is very unreliable. Never works 100 percent. You would be better with a R1 EchoLink Controller Radio
yes VOX can be very touchy. I got it to work not too bad, however if a person pause when talking on zello the radio VOX will cut them off.

To use zello no, however if you are in a "repeater" type zello channel then yes because zello is being TX over the GMRS two-way radio airwaves. This would be up to the repeater owner to "check" to see if people have their GMRS license.

@@GMRStwowayradio I was looking at that. I was concerned about room to plug it in. Also be careful using them hard adapters if radio falls or something mess up jack on radio. I like using cables when I can. Appreciate the help. I ordered everything. Hopefully everything will work ok. Have you tried repeater box? For two radios can be set up for duplex. I'm gonna try it.
