I used to think it was just about holding ur breath.... it's actually like: sprint as fast as u can, get punched in the chest, then thrown from a 50ft height into the water landing awkwardly & shaked while ur under. Then see how long u can hold ur breath.
It all depends on your last breath . Ive had some gnarly wipeouts on some big swells that I felt completely calm and controlled whilst being completely washing machined and then I’ve had some hold downs on much smaller surf where I didn’t get a good breath and completely panicked
@@fernandobrain966 yeah that’s the absolute worst ! I got caught in the lip once surfing some decent sized close out shoreys and got thrown flat on the sand bar. Completely winded me and so by the time the water had engulfed me I tried to grab a breath and just straight inhaled saltwater. I was able to just stand on the sand bar so wasn’t held down for long but it was one of the scariest hold downs
I remember the first time I was pinned down by a wave, it was in Waimanalo Oahu. Not usually surfable waves but it was good enough to surf this day. Water pressure is still the same.
Glad you posted this. Lots of keyboard warriors were talking smack about the hold down when they were watching the edited version. I watched this live, it was super heavy. You are a man among us boys. Respect.
awesome, Thanks! Would have loved to see what your face looked like after that though. Definitely the closest I'll ever be to a 2 wave hold down at Mav's.
Yeh hold your breath in a bath for a few minutes. Run 100 metres or paddle like crazy then get wiped and hold your breath, virtually impossible. Incredible. I've been held under max 15 seconds and it's very very scarey, in huge waves it's life threatening. I think some big wave riders now wear mini life jackets so they pop up quicker
Toby Lama Point Break is my fav Movie so 25yrs ago me and a mate mocked up a Point Break poster where I was Johnny Utah, this is the pic! So I don't look like that anymore! Poster looked good though.

what's the reason for jumping off the board? normally I would think it would be better to stay with your board, duck dive, or turtle? wouldn't being off the board just leave the board to potentially slam you or have you dragged around backwards?
At that point it's impossible to duck dive. Not only is the board way too big, but even if he could have duck dived he would have gotten dragged back and over the falls with the board, which is even worse. You ditch your board so that you can go deeper under water and the impact isnt as heavy, and so that you're not too close to your board cause it can be dangerous.
#jesustakethewheel . I would like to see helmet cam footage of these huge wipeouts. I'll never know what that feels or looks like thank Christ but it would be interesting to see first person.
J. Scaffnetti I'm 13 I had a 2 wave hold down on 10 ft waves nearly died now I only surf 6 ft waves max but it was terrifying it felt like hours but it was about 10 secs and I kept getting rag dolled

Taoist tiger over the falls or trying to ride out a wall of Voo Doo on a pointy sharp finned projectile that floats at the surface is not a good idea....Dump the board and go deep as you can...you're gonna get pounded but hopefully not knocked unconscious by your board/life raft....
Better him than me. That didn't look or sound good at all. And...as we all know these GoPro cams as great as they are do not do justice to the size of the wave when mounted on the board.
It's obviously hard because your body is moving and you're consuming oxygen, but I think anyone who can hold their breath for 45+ can do it with the right mind imo.
I'm sorry I just don't think that's true, it downplays the incredible feat healey and other big wave surfers pull off when they survive two wave hold downs like this, and the years of experience and training it takes. you would have to be able to hold your breath for at least 3x as long resting as you would with an elevated heart rate and getting absolutely thrashed by a monster 20ft wave. see if you can hold your breath for 45s after jogging
You need to be able to hold your breath for at least 2 minutes. It's extremely hard to hold your breath when your body is getting thrashed like that. That, plus the panic and adrenaline makes it incredibly hard to hold your breath for more than 15 seconds.

While drinking a beer and smoking a spliff in the comfort of my armchair, I struggled to hold my breath for as long as you...
The spliff may have something to do with that ; )
I think we have the wrong mark don't you think so? 😂
New light aircraft at the front of the building is a world cup clove thorn crown etc 😂

Much respect to you and ALL big wave chargers,
The shots of the board "tomb-stoning" are pretty creepy.
The first hold down was 26 seconds. Thank god the 2nd one was much less, around 13 secs, cause he was pushed further inside. brutal.
Thanks for sharing this in it's entirely. Inspirational stuff to train harder. Glad you shared it, very helpful.
Amazing footage and sounds! Thanks for sharing the whole encounter, however it scares the crap out of me!

why does the wave look so small compared to the footage from the boat? that footage the wave looks huge. but the onboard footage the wave looks small.
because the GoPro camera angle compresses everything
what footage from the boat?
theres a video taken of this wipeout from a boat
akkasoothy link?
cant remember the video. it was a video covering this particular event and it had his wipeout filmed from a boat near the shore.
So you went surfing….
I counted 3 holdowns
This wasn't an actual two wave hold-down Mark just got held down for one
healey called it a two wave hold down (which it clearly is.) either he's a lying, or you don't know what you're watching. (it's the latter.)
