Photorespiration Pathway

Photorespiration refers to a process in plant metabolism where the enzyme RuBisCO oxygenates RuBP, causing some of the energy produced by photosynthesis to be wasted. The desired reaction is the addition of carbon dioxide to RuBP (carboxylation), a key step in the Calvin-Benson cycle, however approximately 25% of reactions by RuBisCO instead add oxygen to RuBP (oxygenation), creating a product that cannot be used within the Calvin-Benson cycle. This process reduces the efficiency of photosynthesis, potentially reducing photosynthetic output by 25% in C3 plants. Photorespiration involves a complex network of enzyme reactions that exchange metabolites between chloroplasts, leaf peroxisomes and mitochondria.

Thank you for the video! Just to clarify, can photorespiration still make (at least 1) G3P? I read an article on Khan Academy and it said the process doesn't produce glucose but it produces 9 G3Ps. Thanks!!

RUBP ,5C compound shows oxygenase activity by forming 1 mole of phosphoglycolate ( 2C compound) and 1 mole of G3P (3C compound ) Hence, 5C=2C+3C

Phosphoglycolate when converted to G3P enters the C3 cycle and can form glucose. So glucose can be formed from phosphoglycolate not directly and not in photorespiration but after losing one co2 in mitochondria and forming G3P and entering c3 cycle

No this is something separate. Rubisco can lead into 2 pathways. 1) Calvin cycle (if rubisco fixes CO2) 2) Photorespiration (if rubisco fixes O2)
