  • ASYLUM POLICY in the election programs: bed, bread and soap? “With its plans, the Union is testing the limits of the law” - Prof. Thym on the challenges of asylum policy.
Professor Daniel Thym, an expert in European and international law, critically analyzed the parties' asylum programs in an interview with WELT. The SPD is taking a “keep it up” approach without fundamental reforms to the asylum laws. The Greens, on the other hand, prioritize integration and human rights, including at the European level. They are calling for residence rights and legalization options, which makes deportations more difficult. The CDU is focusing on rejections and proposals such as “bed, bread and soap” for those required to leave the country. According to Thym, these plans could cause legal conflicts, for example with regard to subsidiary protection. Overall, Thym emphasizes that border protection alone is not enough and that sustainable solutions are needed at the European level. EU asylum reform remains a decisive factor for German migration policy.
