One thing that’s super accurate about the show is all the singing. I was a Bradley driver, then a gunner, and our track constantly sang. Our go to was Alice In Chains and Mr. Brightside. The idea of an Infantry Fighting Vehicle packed with grown ass men in camouflage, toting loaded guns and screaming Mr. Brightside at the top of their lungs as they rip across a desert is so absurd and hilarious, and Generation Kill portrays it perfectly.

So let me get this straight, RUclips. A video about one of the most violent gruesome stories ever told, that's over 20 hours long, is just fine, but a video like this, that's barely a fraction of that, gets taken down at least two times and when that doesn't work, is given two warnings I have to click through if I want to watch it. I am downloading this to make sure I don't miss it this time.
If you're willing to go through the hassle, watching it on Odysee gives you the "director's cut," as it were. There's still some stuff that got cut around for the sake of the vultures over at RUclips HQ here.
This review is probably way too honest about the recentish history, and Big Globo behaviors, surrounding the events depicted within the miniseries for Big Tech's (a subsidiarie of BigGlobo) liking

I wonder if the experience in the Iraq War, in a small way lead to the USMC Force 2020 changes. they are effectively going back to an aggressive naval expeditionary warfare force and away from being a "2nd Army". Marines are designed to attack the enemy, take ground quickly in order to give the Army a safe landing area to continue the war. But during the Iraq invasion the Army already had a safe place to launch the war from, Kuwait. So the 1st Marines were used as another infantry division. But an infantry division that is designed to fight BATTLES not WARS. this is why they didn't have the logistics for POWs, setting up supply lines, properly secure rear areas and setting up immediate reconstruction. They didn't have things like Civil Engineers, MP Brigades, Civil Affairs Units, Special Troops and large Support Brigades like the conventional Army brings. There is a lot more to war than just "kicking ass". Our leadership didn't plan for it and misused units like these men because of it.
I have to wonder if Mattis's "maneuverability" strategy had a hidden objective of making the looting of treasure, and other illicit dirty deeds, as easy as possible. Iirc, Iraq was notorious for a lot of shadiness of such flavors being perpetrated
Sometimes they just use us as bodies. I was in Afghanistan 2013-2014, as a medic attached to a platoon of cavalry scouts. By this time, we were basically sitting in our FOBs training the Afghani military to take over (we did such a good fuckin job at that didn't we?) Riddle me this: What is the purpose of recon and scouting in a counterinsurgency. That's right. Nothing. When there's no enemy formations to find and report back to HQ, recon is useless. Instead they became infantry-ish. We were given the same missions as the infantry platoons. We knew how to shoot, move, communicate etc, so whatever. Can do. Except for one problem. Size. Infantry platoons are 40-50 men. Cavalry platoons are 25-30 men. So being tasked to the same missions as an infantry platoons with half the unit size was exceedingly taxing, even at the slow tempo of 2013 Afghanistan. The Generals NEVER really learn.
Another big issue with how 1st Recon was doing Maneuver Warfare is that after they take the land, people are supposed to be moving in behind them to take the land they pushed through. But that wasn't happening because they didn't even FUCKING KNOW THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO!

I'm glad Full Metal Jacket was mentioned - the reason that movie shared some similar great qualities, like the extremely vulgar dialogue, camaraderie and give-no-phucs gallows humor of the wartime grunts, is because it was based on the novel "Short Timers" by Gustav Hasford, who was a grunt himself, having served multiple tours in Vietnam and saw combat. Most of the dialogue in the movie Full Metal Jacket is in fact lifted word for word from the dialogue within the book Short Timers, except for there being more, and more varied, of it within said book. The book is also much, much darker (believe it or not) in theme, plot and characterization. I imagine Kubrick probably wouldn't have been able to get it made if he hadn't toned it down the ways he had. That's not a bad thing either, as it means there's brand new territory within it for people to experience if they're inclined to read it. While it is out of print, luckily it has it's own diehard cult fans, so pdfs are always easily found, as well as there being an amazing full audio book version of it free here on RUclips for anyone who'd rather listen to it
The second short timers book isn't as good as the first. The whole blooper arcs and the main character going over to the VC felt forced. The first book is way better in my opinion.

As someone who grew up knowing a lot of military guys, this portrayal looks spot on. I'm definitely adding it to my list of stuff to watch. The "5.56 tumbles" thing is a myth. It doesn't quite work that way. It doesn't punch more than 7.62x51. But its a more stable round than 7.62x39 IE the AKM's round. Out of the 20 inch barrel on the Saw with the 65 grain M855 that Trombley would have at the close range he shot. It would punch straight through with very little expansion Edit: Grammar
Now let’s imagine 5.56 out of a 20 inch barrel (with a 1/7 military twist) with anything but M855 green tips. The M855 serves a purpose but won’t serve well against human flesh. Anything else out of a 20 inch barrel with ruin your day
@Gustavo Almanza Regardless, it will punch straight through someone. Hell standard ass M193 out of a 20-inch barrel defeats a lot of body armor with plenty of kinetic force behind it. Especially a child like shown in Generation Kill

Great video man, writing this while i'm deployed in the middle east. And gotta say, great review for a great show. I joined the Air Force, since to an extent, like these poor bastards I was filled with that manly fervor that tons of kids have when they see the military, I WANTED to join the Army in the Infantry, but my Stepdad, a man I respect so much that after the first couple years I knew him, he has only been "dad". Served in the Mexican Paratroopers, fought in Chiapas against the Communists there. And he told me there was no glory in those things and all you will end with is nightmares you can never make go away. I have been in 7 years now, never been fired at, thankfully never have fired on anyone. With luck the most I will ever need to fire on will be paper targets and an animal I intend to eat.
I hype this every single time someone talks about war series and movies. I was army in Afghanistan, not Marines in Iraq, but there's a serious cultural bleed over. When someone wants to know what wartime military is like, this is it.
They underestimated Israel's ability to use war crimes, U.S. Intelligence, Air and Naval Support to defeat three armies that were completely dis-unified and couldn't communicate effectively with each other...
Seems very accurate. I think this came out while I was over there. I'll probably watch it at some point. I drove a Bradley in an infantry unit. It was more or less, ride around and see if we get blown up, for 9 to 12 hours a day. Had some really cool moments in between though. There was the infamous hot sauce incident, where someone ordered some shit that was so damn hot, we had to take someone to the hospital for consuming it, gave another guy IV fluids, and it had me curled up in the fetal position regretting life. Our "Top" ended up confiscating the shit. Another gem was the "power hour" where some buddies tried to chug a gallon of milk and see who could resist throwing up the longest. One of my favorite moments involved a bunch of kids living in mud huts. I had my family send a soccer ball and took it out on patrol with us, just for them. I handed it to my gunner so he could show it to them. Then we drove a bit and he tossed it out so that they could have a fair race for it. It's not much given the fact that we set them back to the stoneage, but those kids sure was happy about that soccer ball....
I always got the sense that Iraq was a confluence of multiple different factors. This included oil interest, defense contractor interest, genuine belief in the national security and intelligence apparatus that Iraq had WMD’s, true believers in liberation and democratic idealism, and (what I personally think probably brought all these interests together into a coalition pushing a very specific policy: invade Iraq) genuine American hawks and ideologues enraged by 9/11 and the ability by a small group of people to punch up and weaken Americas image. I always got the sense Cheney and Rumsfeld wanted to send a message to the world that America isn’t to be fucked with. Like going into a criminals neighborhood and shooting his neighbors as retribution. Indiscriminate retribution.

I'll always have a special and dark place for GK in my heart--it was the book I read to my wife in the hospital (effective coma), she woke up that night I read to her.
That's so fucking metal, and also (very) late congrats for your wife
@@atpyro7920 Thanks, I appreciate the sentiment. It was maybe the hardest 4 days of my life--and I'm no stranger to familial deaths and such.. but I don't wanna bore you with the context that made it even darker.
@@atpyro7920 TLDR if you're in a long-term relationship and are certainly gonna get married; you should do so before you'll be put in an impossible position where your say and choices don't matter.. as you're not married. We'd been together for 9 years at the time and planned marrying on our 10 year anniversary of being together. After all that, we just went to the county courthouse to never have that situation again.
It was made worse by the fact she has no living nuclear family. All dead when she was 21.
It would punch straight through with very little expansion
Edit: Grammar
Now let’s imagine 5.56 out of a 20 inch barrel (with a 1/7 military twist) with anything but M855 green tips. The M855 serves a purpose but won’t serve well against human flesh. Anything else out of a 20 inch barrel with ruin your day
@Gustavo Almanza Regardless, it will punch straight through someone. Hell standard ass M193 out of a 20-inch barrel defeats a lot of body armor with plenty of kinetic force behind it. Especially a child like shown in Generation Kill
I'm glad someone else already addressed his fuddlore
There's a reason why all grunt units always have this and FMJ as their must watch. Shit's so fucking real sometimes.
Edited: I cannot believe I also didn't mention The Pacific. Me and the bois loved that too.
An amazing breakdown, so much so I am using it in my disortation about how honest the show is but you break it down so well. Rock on brother. Plz keep doing beserk!
NO WAY! Hope it lasts, as it is one of my favourite videos of yours.
I’m so glad this video is back, one of your bests, hopefully it’ll stay up this time, Loli!
Super happy that this came back. Probably one of my favorite videos behind your Berserk analysis.
Thank god this video is back up probably one of my favourites from your channel
I love your choice in background music I can name like every track you play and I really enjoy it
Gentleman, it is my solemn duty to inform you that Evan Wright aka Reporter and Rolling Stones has passed away.
Pour one out for him boys, we lost a real one.
🥃
It's surreal watching movies and shows like this after having grown up seeing all of it happen day by day on the morning news every morning before going to school
You(tube) can't keep a good loli down. I was recently wondering where this went, having only watched it once. Nice job getting this back up.
GK got everything right that The Hurt Locker got dead wrong. My whole platoon besides a few guys walked out of watching the DVD when we were in Iraq watching THL.
Loli , I truly hope there is a place deeper then hell for you! I watch your video live, and I’ve now just watch all of GK for about the 200 time. Like yourself I’ve never served, but most of my close friends have. And I’ve watch this show because of them, you have truly ruined my day. My girl probably asked me 6 times my I wasn’t listening to her BS. Ever time you drop, even if it’s something I’ve seen (which to be honest isn’t very much) I have to watch the item of topic. Great work once again, your videos really save my days. From the man with the brand, thanks.
one of my favorite videos from you, very glad its back. Thanks loli :))))
I don't remember Mutahar (AKA SomeOrdinaryGamers) sounding like he was about to break into tears in his video on 6 Days. Hell, he said in the video that he's excited for the game.
I came for Berserk content, but stayed for quality materials. Gr8 job, awesome material. Looking forward to new vids.
Love the instrumental in the background, especially "Black Helicopters" very fitting for its point in the video.
Wooooo yeah baby re-upload, that's what I've been waiting for that's what it's all about!
This is your most underrated video. I've literally rewatched it 4 times
This is my favorite review of yours since it came out, glad to see it back on the tubes even if it is truncated.
something about the calm talk of war while nujabes plays in the background makes me feel some type of way
We had a rough deployment in Afghanistan and on the workup to it i had a corpsman who turned me on to nujabes
. He had an iPod classic full of his music. I bought it from him and listened to stuff like kumomi klammbon and luv sic for hours before we transited home. I think it helped me out because I've never really had PTSD from anything and just chalked the experience up to what happens in war. I would just play the music in the background and kind of untie the knots of what happened in my head so yeah, yay nujabes
Ngl this is probably my favorite video you've put to RUclips, I haven't sat for a 90 minute video without distractions for a while, but here I am.
I would love to see more content like this, boring context history included; In fact I fucking love that shit, Keep doing it.
Generation Kill is easily one of my favorite shows of all time and I am incredibly glad to see the video uploaded again. Your review when it was originally posted was what caused me to go and watch it.
I have watched all the David Simon shows and this was my second favourite show after the wire. I wasn’t interested in reading the book but after watching this video, I want to read it. Thanks for the video
Saw the original upload, this show was great. Glad the video is back 💜
To be honest I really love this video keep it up , great stuff .
Thanks for the video, it was pretty good. Think I might watch the show again soon, maybe have some more appreciation for it now.
Keep on keeping on.
i've been beyond hyped for this review for a long time!!
Awesome video as usual and I love the ending with Johnny cash
Thanks for making this video, Loli. Saw the show after seeing your Generation Kill trailer video when I had a week off from work favorite
The history lesson was fire fam, I still remember watching the news and then looking across the Hudson and just seeing smoke come down from the breeze, wild times man
I already got a content warning before watching this. You ain't getting a penny from RUclips after all that work, that really sucks.
It was a labor of love, so it wasn't really about the money.
@@TheAlmightyLoli Eww you sound like a filthy commie.
Seriously though thanks for these awesome passion projects and fantastic recommendations. Your channel is WAY underated.
I really hope this stays up. The og video I shit you not changed my life and I was pissed when it got taken down.
Excellent video my dude. Love this series. Gotta read the book too.
That's a damn good video. Glad you post It again.
Soldiers love to sing when they are suffering. It helps cope with what is happening. Shoot, I do it walking in freezing temperatures or worse types of conditions, and I honestly feel so much better. Doesn't matter I cannot sing, or I just make up lyrics, just singing is so powerful a tool to deal with stress.
Which is why modern militaries limiting what can be song sucks so much of the soul out of a unit.
Why would military limit what song so sing?
@@whiteeye3453 hurts the feelings of the enemy or of your commander's favorite twink.
@@whiteeye3453 It looks like RUclips ate up my old reply.
Basically, the modern military worries more about hurt feelings than actual combat. (I don't know if I can say anything more, without the comment being deleted.)
After joining the marines i used to really hate one dude and we got into a fight and he kicked my ass and no we are tighter than my real brother. Cause behind all the offensive jokes when you going through shit the guys that got your back will be there for you when you going through the ringer.
Amazing how many stories like that I here from vets. How you go from, "I Fucking hate this guy" to considering him a brother.
Thanks for this really informative review
Glad you got this video back.
you know it’s gonna be a good video when youtube gives you three warnings before it starts
The old video inspired me to watch the series. I really love Generation Kill, even if I'm a Brit bong and my country didn't really take much part. Well as deep as the Yankees
Ooohhh two warnings from RUclips hype
AlmightyLoli great work again man now I’m gonna see this series
They underestimated Israel's ability to use war crimes, U.S. Intelligence, Air and Naval Support to defeat three armies that were completely dis-unified and couldn't communicate effectively with each other...
They weren't De unified. They were literally in the arab league.
Also sucks to suck.
@@Fauwkes My Goy is coping and seething
Well this was informative, and great trailer for my next Saturday.
Thank you for introducing me to generation kill all that time ago
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen.
"Yes, RUclips. I'm older that a scared cat and want to see this masterpiece of video!" =D
Your videos only get better, great stuff.
Hell yeah, I missed this video. Hopefully it stays this time
I always got the sense that Iraq was a confluence of multiple different factors.
Jedi minds tricks as background music. !Your too good for youtube bro
Dude, you are the best reviewer. Every video you do and the depth you go into. Love it. Also, great editing. Do you put the uncut origionals on your subscribe star or anything?
I think he posts them on odysee and bitchut.
This alongside band of brothers is my favorite depiction of military whilst deployed
I remember as a kid born in 02 some of my friends used to joke about 9/11, until we were all in school when the marathon bombing happened and almost all our families who were in Boston couldn’t get out because of the search, roadblocks and general fear, my da was lucky enough to have taken the literal LAST red line to middleboro when it happened because he didn’t see the results when it should’ve came through
Congratulations on getting 100k subscribers
Common W video by the one and only.
Another great video bro.
