Score - a technical look into vib-ribbon

- I like the satisfaction of finishing a long-form video (especially after I spend a long time on it.) I had a draft for this very video from November of last year but I wanted to rethink it a bit. Other than that, I hope it all ends well!

Every game: has normal numeric points
Vib-ribbon: haha shapes go brrrr
Music makes me lose control
Vibri Scares Me, She Has Broken Into My House 12 Times And Has Stolen a Playstation Controller Each Time
you had twelve
What’s funny is that it isn’t just the community that calls them coupons. The official PAL manual literally calls the scoring shapes coupons which is just hilarious to me
Literally just found out about this game, this is the second video I've watched about it and I'm kinda blown away. The bizarre but mathematical nature of the in-game display score is oddly mesmerizing, and your video did an awesome job showcasing that. Gotta play more cult classics like this.
Me to
Looking at the chart and noticing that it's a Pascal's Triangle immediately gives so much insight into why the score coupons are like that, thanks for showing the full thing as early as you did
Oh, you just say that out loud twenty seconds later... guess that's on me for not watching the video
I'm sleepy and thought this video had 76k likes and thought it seemed legit
Only now at the end i noticed it was only 76, and now I'm sad
This video was definitely high quality, i enjoyed every minute of it
Keeping it small and humble is what I do best, I guess! Haha
Over 19k views and only 962 likes? Ima add 1 more
now this comment has 76 likes
I just realized that despite her innocent demeanor, Vibri is actually some sort of mathematical genius.
She is the one who that turns the shapes values into numbers after every game, in real time.
wow this video is the most niche, specific, and detailed thing ever and i love it
20:54 For those who don't know, they use a certain sound effect to replace the unreachable digit when shortening the score by removing the first digit.

Found this video from a mention in someones comment and I can say, that even though the microphone sounds like from a 5$ headset, the delivery was so cool that the mic quality didn't matter in the end.
Watched till the end, and I didn't even play vib-ribbon, nor did I have a console back in the days. You got this funny-interesting youtuber charm.
I'm still trying to find what to do to make my mic sound better. Gotta make do with what I have. But thanks anyway!
my brain now hurts so badly after watching this, and that proves how well you did in this video
woah, i like how this is good by 100%

why is a glaceon talking to me about an obscure rhythm game's scoring system
I don't know, why shouldn't there be?
XD
ive loved this game for years, so its really interesting to finally see how parts of it works
This Super Mario 64 select screen music while listening to some technical/mathematical explanations defo gives some Pannenkoek vibes :D
I recently got into the Vib Ribbon rabbit hole myself and acquired the Japanese version of the game. BTW the value search could've been done easier by scanning for unknown values that increase each time you score some points and stay the same while you don't scare any^^
Great video tho :3
Great video! I would definitely get a better microphone and/or record in a padded room, and I would definitely suggest doing multiple recording takes. But other than that, this video is well presented and informative. Hope to see more videos like this from you!
What in the hell is a padded room

Good technical video. Maths concepts mixed with Vib-Ribbon? Yes please! Nice mic audio too

It never escapes
when you see it
I can't fucking take it. I see an image of a random score posted and then I see it, I fucking see it. "Oh that looks kinda like the Blue Zenith 727 score" it started as. That's funny, that's a cool reference. But I kept going, I'd see a clock with time that showed 7:27, I'd see that I'm on the 7/27 page on my school homework, my last notice to pay my electricity bill is 727$ , I'd notice that it's been 727 days since the last time I touched a woman. And every time I'd burst into an insane, breath deprived laugh staring at the image as the number 727 ran through my head. I'm scared to look at the time when someone asks me what time is it. It's torment, psychological torture, I am being conditioned to laugh maniacally any time I see an 3-digit number which is anywhere close to 727. I can't fucking live like this... I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't! And don't get me fucking started on the words! I'll never hear the phrase "when you see it" again without thinking of 727. Someone does pretty cool and respectable score and I can't say anything other than "WYSI." I could watch a man Fc hard underweighted map I love and all I would be able to say is "WYSI" and laugh like a fucking insane person. And the phrase "when you see it" is ruined. I can't live anymore. 727 has destroyed my fucking life. I want to eject myself from this plane of existence.
I cannot escape it 😭
20:56 Vibri: and your score was @$#&$#@ and thats a high score
A hidden gem of a video. Blessed be the algorithm on this day
this is my favorite video ever, it mixes my two favorite things: vib ribbon and numbers. thank you for making this video
I can't immagine why not more people use this very convinient notation for their numbers. It's really simple!
This video was really good, and loved the production effort plus it combines a lot of subjects I absolutely adore! Next time though consider RNNoise or audacity's/your video editting software's tool for noise-reduction on your mic, it's pretty noticeable. Otherwise loved it! Will watch more!
9:25 hey look I saw the funny number
WYSI
21:53 i"m now imagining vib ribon seeing the score and just staring at it in shock.
The coupon scoring system is my favorite aspect of vib ribbon. I find it super interesting and smart. In fact I made a small prototype of the system in Minecraft a while back.
Fun fact: even though Bronze course is the easiest stage, it is by far the hardest to get a 1st place highscore on, since the levels give less points than the other onesso you have to do a lot of double freestyle moves
Fellow glaceon lover!
this was something that i was always curious about but never really knew if anyone answered it or not. very interesting stuff!!
*_IT'S PASCAL'S TRIANGLE???_*
THAT'S SO FUN
I’ve showed this video to a couple friends of mine- had to explain what Vib-Ribbon was fjsjdjdj-
Even if I don’t fully understand half of it- it’s still fun to see parts of games broken down and explained like this.
I hope you do more stuff like this in the future!!!
also what’s the song that plays at 18:02 (sorry for the obligatory “hEy WhAt SoNg Is ThIs” comment)
Here is the link to the song on modarchive (as an xm file).

this is tne most neurodivergent video I've ever watched
I’m sorry, but for as much as I didn’t pay attention in school, I know none of my math teachers even remotely touched anything like the pyramid.
(Other than my social studies teacher who showed us the lattice method.)
Public education is horrible.
Oh so thats why vibribbons scoring is so weird
This video and channel are so underratedddd
Now I want to hear negative scores.
That was great!
I love your videos! They are so nice!
8:12 i have never seen vibri mad beore
I clicked on this vid without even knowing it was you
With that bg noise you'd think it's from the 1900
bro why this dude sound like pannenkoek2012
especially with the mario 64 music
can you make a video explaining exactly how vib-ribbons core mechanics work (how are levels generated/made with custom CD, how does the game determines if you pass or miss an obstacle, whats the window on when you can pass an obstacle)
I don't fully understand it, but helped me sleep
OOOOOOOO he BACCC
2:31 hey i have duckstation
20:54 GET THAT STROKE AWAY FROM ME
Is it just me or do your videos feel like MattKC's videos?
"0. ROUNDED DO--"
I could make out how the score system went up through observation, and how if you manage to make it so that all your score symbols (i call them score symbols) are one shape, you next good move will turn them all into one single shape with a greater value than the rest i think???
19:22 "but that's java" doesn't c also do that though
omg the sm64 music 😭 bro is NOT pannenkoek‼
I like da vibri drawings
hi are you still alive i jsut want to say nice video and omg cute character'

Wow i really understood that! (What is this numbers)
👏👏👏👏👏
Math and video game count me in
I want a program that could convert the numbers into those shapes
.. halfway through the video i forgot the video was about vib ribbon..
i thought it was just math
DO NOT TAKE THIS OFFENSIVELY! i find this math interesting, surprisingly
is a word not 16-bits (2 bytes), or have I been coding in rgbds too much?
All of this is well and good, but how the hell do I SAVE my high scores?! I don't see a way to save the game at all!
Also is it possible to read the shapes as a number while playing if you remember how the score is displayed?
@therobloxianminecrafter5968 well that's stupid
@therobloxianminecrafter5968 yes there is. if you get a high score, you'd want it to be saved.
now determine the max score you can get within the 6 levels in the game is
i play vib ribbbon with the score system tracking thing you have
This is pretty good
interesting! cool cool

-rep for furry but +rep for great content.
Putting the memery aside though, great video! It was insightful and managed to hold my attention all the way through, the animation frames were great and definitely lend some distinction to your content aswell.
My only complaint is that the transitions can take a bit longer then they need to to get from point to point. But I imagine its mostly personal preference. Definitely going to check out all your wider content.
9:25 ???
how did you find 28 minutes worth of content from technical perspective of an ancient game that nobody even knows about? did developer post any dev logs?
