  • Like its biological model, the flic-flac spider, the BionicWheelBot can both walk and roll. Together with its discoverer, Professor Ingo Rechenberg, the Festo bionics team has used these unique movement patterns and turned them into a technical masterpiece for the Hannover Messe 2018.

    this robot can be quite useful, as it can travel fast over smooth terrain, and then maneuver through uneven terrain to possibly use tech located on its underbelly or any place that happens to not touch the ground during both the rolling and crawling mode.

    the spider is jumping and doing flips because the sand is so hot it cannot touch the sand any longer - "rolling" is a just a side effect. its basically doing cartwheels with 2 of 8 limbs, cooling the hot tips in the airflow. after the introduction video and the video i saw before, penguin and squid - this one is still way to go. yet the wheelbot is an interesting piece of work. the two legs doing your rolling movement are just for stability in the spiders case.

      its a prototype to show the technology
      you could use robots like this to search collapsed buildings for survivors, or use them as mobile security cameras
      or turn it into a weapon, or do maintenance work in tight spaces like pull cables in

    • @joshuanorth2079
      @joshuanorth2079 5 лет назад +2

      I can see the whole collapsed building being a option, but a camera? Yeah, maybe when it's walking. A weapon? Bullshit, it's a slow moving spider that can roll slightly faster then it walks, you can't just put a gun or taser on it and expect it to take out anything other than maybe bugs. I can see how it could pull in cables, but calling that maintenance doesn't make a lot of sense, calling it a "because i can't fit" makes more sense.

    • @iiiDartsiii
      @iiiDartsiii 5 лет назад

      every new technology that comes out at first people say that exact same thing fyi. having legs to walk has advantages over wheels but also wheels are faster, this one turns legs into wheels so it can have the best of both worlds without needing both legs and wheels.

    Wouldn't it be better if the robot just pitched the back legs during the roll thus adding momentum? This would avoid the need to the extra pair of pushing legs.
