Im not gonna lie. When denken stood up and said. "Well were gonna have to do this the old fashion way" i thought he was about to reveal some kind of like ancient natural or spirit magic. Like a type of magic thats more animalistic or something. But nope. My man just decided to throw hands like a cave man. Massive respect and it turned him into my favorite character.
same here. Easily the best character in the show.
He's one of the few who frieren though as a true mage because there no point being given magic.
The moment he says "You're a man aren't you?" he became my favorite character
Denken is a real one. Out of mana? Fisticuffs it is!
The oldest spell: I cast FIST!
Y'all have defensive magic so try catching these hands
Denken is a practitioner of the ancient art of Fuck it we ball

Out of mana but not out of options
Went from talking about Frieren as a show to it's armpits to cold feet and to somehow animal SA
Welcome to trash taste
@silksonic3927 with that ending??? nah
@@episode389 Better than a show with no ending though.
@silksonic3927 nah man
Aot is the best anime yall just like fmab bc of nostalgia
Don't worry dear viewers, Frieren's feet and Ubel's armpits are absolutely and perfectly essential to the plot.
And so are Fern’s… “ferns”, apparently.
Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well.
hayao was right when he said anime was a mistake
Pouts
Me and my mother watched Frieren together and neither of us noticed.
The thing is, whether hardcore fans dislike it or not, anime is not a niche thing anymore, globally. It has become a standard, broad form of entertainment just like "movies" or "music", which means causal fans' opinions matter just as much as hardcore fans'.
the #1 spot on MAL HAS to be at least a little bit "overrated" according to hardcore anime fans, because none of the more "nuanced/cultured" picks have enough reach or relatability for more casual watchers.
Just like FMAB, Frieren dosen't have any serious flaws that would put off a large number of people, which is more important to its ranking than how good it is at its best.
This is exactly my thoughts.
Wish I was a nerd like you so I could write so beautifully & poetic. Best comment you took the words out my mouth 🙏🏻
Someone with actual media literacy
It's not there yet, I know a large number of people who are relatively young, or younger than I am that know what it is, but never really watch it, Maybe in another generation or two, because culturally it's everywhere, but a large portion just overlook it.
It is the closest thing to Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings fantasy feeling. So 23ish years of bringing that same feeling.
It obviously got compared to Rings of Power which missed the mark with Galadriel. I drew the comparison immediately after watching only one episode of RoP compared to Frieren.
Frieren isn’t my favorite anime, but both it and Apothecary Diaries were on a great run. If any of them got the top spot I wouldn’t be mad.
love them both
Apothecary? No. It's fun, but it's not close to being in the running for best of all time. Frieren? Sure. Apothecary? No. Top 30 MAYBE, and that's very generous imo, I'd say closer to 80.
@@DutchDread I do prefer Frieren but remember Apothecary Diaries is a slow burn and we've only covered 2/17 of the source material. So it has lots of room to overtake Frieren
@@DutchDread Frieren starts off much, much stronger than Apothecary. However, the longer you follow the series, the worse Frieren becomes, as it does get kind of repetitive without much development. Apothecary is the opposite, it digs deeper into the characters and let them change and be changed.
For me, Apothecary passed Frieren around the half way point (i.e. ~12-14 episode).
I'd personally put Apothecary above Frieren, I've just finished watching Frieren and it was fun and the characters were good. But the world itself felt a bit bare. We had snippets of a couple towns here and there and the interaction with the people but when you compare it to the world setting of Apothecary, which is a more enclosed space, but you can see the shifting of energy and flow of it better. I also just love Maomao as a character far more, she's witty and fun, along with the entourage of characters around her that she drags into her shenanigans. And yeah Apothecary is more of a slow burn, as we get to watch the characters develop and change over time, whereas with Frieren the amount of character development doesn't feel like that much even though so much time passes during the passage of those 28 episodes.
Ubel is the crazy chick, but that is why I think she is powerful. IIRC, the manga keeps saying something like "magic in this world is only as strong as the person perceiving it." Yet Ubel's signature move is slicing anything that she believes that she can slice, I think that's how it works. So the kind of crazy mentality that she has allows her to beat seemingly unstoppable opponents.
Her entire philosophy is literally just "Nah I would win" and cause she thinks that she wins. Tbh, I do like the show's magic system, but this type of mage is kinda insane, one not bound by the limitations of their own mind and with such a high degree of self efficacy that she can defeat her mind purely based on the thought that she could.
@@KommandantAegisthat’s why I love it. The show sets up an intricate and beautiful magic system and Übel comes in and bastardizes it. She’s literally the anti-Frieren
@@KommandantAegisshe’s not that powerful. She is powerless against Denken and Wirbel. Wirbel would have killed her if Fern didn’t interfere. And her magic doesn’t cut basic defensive magic barrier. She is not too op, yet.
She's a sorcerer in a DnD setting with only wizards. "You need BOOKS to cast spells? You have NAMES for these things? I just make sh*t up and it works!"
She's not super powerful (yet), as we can see in her fight with Wirbel, but she's still a wild card and very dangerous against the right opponent.
If Frieren is a bit like taking a shotgun to a game of rock-paper-scissors against most mages and demons, then Übel is the scissor that would cut just about anything that even remotely resembles paper.
@@neerajcherukuri4052 She's scissors when some very powerful mages only play paper.
I didn't like Ubel, until the scene where she explained her line of thought for how she uses magic. That really stood out to me, because I like magic systems, and it's being said during the show that you need to imagine stuff to perform magic. Still, when Ubel explains how her power works, this concept hits a new level for me since most insane characters that use magic, are mostly just normal wizards that went crazy. Ubel can cut stuff just because she thinks she can, not in the "I am powerful that's why I can cut anything" like Zarak from Bleach, but instead "My head works differently from most people, that's why I am the only one who can do this'". Using a psychological wall instead of a power wall is an interesting concept. I think the closest one is probably Tatsuya from Mahouka.
there's also that delusional boy in fireforce
She called ÜBEL not UBEL. For God sake!!
@@Gecko3456 hush bb it ok
Yeah. I don't get how the boys can just say she's only a fanservice bait when her ability seems like something really important in the worldbuilding, and at least to me seems like a set up for something big later down the story. Even the top magicians in the story are scared of her even when they're technically stronger than her, she's got to be important
@@Gecko3456anyways, Ubel is a very interesting character and rlly helped explain the magic system (atleast for me)
We tolerate no Ubel slander here 😤
And I tolerate no Übel misspellings here 😤
😅😅
For me Übel, adds on to their worlds magic system. Howyour mind works affect imagination
@@kanemochi4400 Exactly. She's actually a good narrative aspect, not just fanservice. lol
Was gonna say this. I love how the show presents a beautiful magical system, and then Übel just comes in and bastardizes it, she’s the anti-Frieren and (I’m anime only) I believe she’s the mage that will end up killing Frieren.
love how the actual frieren discussion is 2 mins long
It's a great anime, so why not?
But is it the best anime? Those two are not the same
@@jeremygeller9145 That is always going to be *impossible* to determine.

Not trying to be contrarian, but what makes it so special? I watched about 10 episodes myself and I certainly thought it was good, but it didn't feel like anything I hadn't already seen a hundred times before. I didn't understand what makes it so great that it gets talked about so much.
@@TheJuniorAccountant True, but the first season is a masterpiece.
And that is precisely my point. Any anime that is a masterpiece is eligible for that top spot.
Would Skelter Heaven deserve to be number one? No.
Would Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu deserve to be number one? Sure, why not?
Frieren anime is like Pizza, in that anyone can love and enjoy it regardless of age and gender. So deserved rank imo.
To use your analogy many don’t like pizza everyone has a preference. Pizza is good but depending on preference it is not always the best. I also highly doubt age applies for Frieren since it more laid back with some parts with action.

Frieren is still ongoing, still developing, I think it's got an excellent shot to be The Best when all's said and done, but you should never raise a statue for the living when they can still disgrace the stone.
I think that’s BS that it has to be ended. Why does it need to end to be the best?
@@thomasffrench3639 Because if it has a shit ending it drags the overall quality down *cough* game of thrones *cough*

Frieren has quickly become one of my favorite anime of all time . That being said I don’t think a show can actually be « the best » if it’s not complete yet . I mean think if GoT , think of Promised Neverland . If they were to say that it’s not getting a season 2 and its plot will remain unresolved , I don’t think people would be able to consider it the best anime of all time anymore , which means that people who currently see it as the BOAT judge it so partly based on a portion of Frieren that currently only exists in their head , even if not very clearly .
Thats my main thought too.
Frieren is brilliant, it deserves to be somewhere up there.
But as it stands it is not as complete as something like FMAB, it hasnt had the time to properly dig into its themes, it might very well tie everything up beautifully, but it hasnt yet, so we cant judge it by that yet.
Was this video about Frieren at some point?
I agree with Connor so hard, I got raynaud's disease and flexing toes and hands doesn't make them warm. You gotta cover them puppies up.
Don't have Raynaud's but I do get chilblains quite easily, so I do strongly agree with you and Connor.
I too get cold extremities, but that doesn't make me psychotic enough to wear socks in bed. At most I put on those fluffy indoor "shoes" (made out of textile and filled with feathers like a pillow), or the beanbag-slippers you microwave to heat up. But *socks* in bed? Hell no!
I also repositioned my bed so the feet-end touches the radiator, so I can stick them inside it, or cover it with the blanket to heat up underneath it.
I also sometimes take a hot water footbath before bed, so I can unfreeze the bones deep inside, and overall restore circulation (cold bodyparts constrict blood-vessels to protect core-temp. warm ones expand instead. So if I go to bed with them warm then the core-temp can keep them warm when underneath a blanket).
I know some people used weighted blankets to help increase their warmth. No idea why that helps.
But only the most insane would wear socks while beneath a blanket, at home. And overall, socks are really uncomfortable and constricting (imo they even make my feet colder because of how it keeps all blood out) and the first thing that ppl take off after the outerwear, when at home.
Similar with how you don't have anything on when sleeping, so you can feel the 2 clothes that is the bed and the blanket. And doesn't have to feel all sweaty and gross.
But I disagree with them about pajamas being worse, since the entire idea there is that they are made from textile that actually makes it tolerable to wear them to sleep (breathes, smooth, etc). If one feel they have to wear anything to bed, it should be pajamas.
skill issue,
Frieren is def one of my favorites if not my favorite because of the great story, cool characters and emotional moments
For me personally Frieren hasn’t been cooking long enough for it to be considered the best anime on MAL. I feel people should really take their time and really think about how it compares to other shows along with considering if it will be able to age well or not over time.
before ranking it as the 1# show
Do you get how the rank works? Is it not people comparing which series deserve the top spot, it's just the highest combined score will be the one.
It's 10 times better than this overrated fuck show named FMAB and because of this it's deserves number 1.
Frieren, while good is not the best anime ever made. Vinland Saga and Legend of the Galactic Heroes are better. Not saying Frieren is bad, on the contrary. It's just that there are a couple of shows that are better.
@gwynvt yes, yes it's subjective, just like OP's opinion....so what is your point exactly?
It's not being ranked as the #1 show, it's getting ranked as the #1 season of any show out yet. Which I think is perfectly reasonable. Do you think there is any show out there where 1 season of it as it's own standalone could surpass the level of impact that frieren has made?
Connor is being an actual delight this episode and honestly all of the boys are 😂
Good moods and fun topics
Frieren was the best first season of an anime I may have ever seen. I’m so excited for more and I can’t argue with it being #1. I’m also not as big a fan of FMAB so I’m happy for it to be dethroned
Man, 2 bad takes in one comment.
FMAB would've lost the #1 spot ages ago if not for the obsessed fans using bots tbh. It's good, but it's not THAT good.
@alexprus7953 That's been debunked so many times lol. What happens is the exact opposite. An anime gets positively botted by fanboys to #1 and then falls off after it stops airing as more people rate it lower. Bleach was a good example.
@@za-ir5niNot a bad take. Frieren has been one of the most consistently amazing anime throughout its entire run, and throughout this season.

That scene - while I get why you'd call it fanservice - it's too show the childish and excited part of Frieren that we didn't get to see before. And it is an important part of her. If you listen to audio the kicks are perfectly synchronized and sound itself is really, really good.
at the end of the day it's just peoples opinions, and the opinions are saying yes.
You are delusional if you think that it's only "yes" ,it's definitely not the case, but my opinion is just simple, I think Frieren manga which I have read, and I didn't watch the anime but from what I heard is that it's fantastic adaptation, I love Freiren manga, it's really funny, it really have a pretty unique concept, in my humble opinion it doesn't have any outstanding characters which I will remember like in one piece and attack on Titan, Death Note, but anyways it's amazing, but do I think that it deserves the no 1 spot and is it even the best series, oh hell no, even some super popular series like aot, Death Note, one piece, spy x family, and the 100 girlfriends are just much better than Frieren, but you know what it's just recency bias, I don't really care if some one not gonna agree with my opinion but Im very confident when I say this that it's literally recency bias😊😊😊

What I expected: a discussion about Frieren
Reality: SOCKS!!!! (and Frieren)
It's the only "FMA dethroner" that didn't make me think "no, this is bullshit, it's not that good, which will be reflected in the score once the more down to earth people start watching, and then FMA:B fans will be blamed for it".
This one actually can actually be argued to be as good or better, and as a result, it's actually staying up there.
FMA:B fans were rightfully blamed for botting 1 scores, or rating a show 1 without watching previous seasons. This is silly, down to earth people? Literal bots. Especially when the number 1 on mal was some late season of a long running show. They definitely watched all those seasons to judge it, for sure
As an FMAB fan I think my show being dethroned by Freiren is an honor & I even think it deserves its spot, the other shows that past it before didn’t deserve that spot but this one yes.👍
There's probably a bit of bias in the mal score for how recent it was, as well as it being rather "safe" in terms of western sensibilities, as a LOT of great shows have aspects that many western fans especially can find off-putting. Neither of these are in any way a detriment to the show btw. It's a beautiful, extremely well written show. It's emotional, it's got humour when it can, and asks some very real & deep questions to the audience. It is by all accounts a phenomenal anime. To me the one thing it lacks is stakes. At no point did I really feel like the heroes were in any real danger. The labyrinth had it a little, but it has been established very early on that Frieren is an exceptionally powerful mage, and that Fern could well surpass her, and perhaps already does in some aspects. Nothing that's been put in their path so far felt like it could best them.
Still a solid 9/10 show for me though, and comfortably takes a spot alongside Mushoku Tensei and Made in Abyss (S1) as one of my all time faves in the fantasy genre.
Frieren seriously probably my favorite anime of all time. Top five. It is really good. So unique and it hit the high fantasy magic itch. It just nailed it. Very nostalgic to fantasy I read as a kid in the 80’s.
I can't sleep without socks on. The only time I take my socks off is in the shower. I can't stand my feet touching anything.
Garnt and Joey are the weirdoes here. No socks almost all the time? Caveman mentality. The fact they don't know what poor circulation is boggles my mind though. It's in the name for crying out loud.
If I'm in my house why TF should I wear socks?
Caveman mentality? Well, we still are biologically cave men, so maybe that's not a problem. I've got nothing against those who prefer to wear socks. If you've got poor circulation or whatever, do whatever feels most comfortable. However, as one who does not suffer this deficiency, as my own circulation works just fine, I don't see how I'm being some primitive savage for walking around without socks in my own damn house. You might as well be calling me a savage for not wearing thin gloves indoors.
It's a show that you can show you're family without maximum shame.
Frieren is a great show and I really enjoyed it, although I don't think it deserves to be no 1. Personally, I think FMA: Brotherhood should still be no 1 as I truly think that deserves the top spot. I gave Frieren a 9/10, whereas I gave Brotherhood a 10/10.
Eh, Übel was fine, but what really surprised me about this show is how much I fucking loved every single elf character. Usually, elves are boring for me, but Frieren managed to write them really well and differently. Love Frieren, love Serie, love Kraft.
Well what makes an anime 'deserve' to be rated #1 on MAL (or any site to be honest)
I'm sure there's plenty of candidates and no single anime that deserves it over everything else
This is true, but the fact that is still up there means that people accept it as one of the greats at this point
I'd say if it's a classic or a defining anime that inspires other anime. Kinda like how the big 4 of shonen or Fist of the north star inspire tons of other anime. I personally dont think frieren deserves that cause it's way too early to call it a classic because it hasn't even been a year that the anime has ended. Manga might be another story though.
Finally a Wen-li pfp that has some common sense regarding this topic.
I'm with connor on this. my feet run cold. i've never sweated from my feet
Recency bias is hard with this one
It has not only accelerated the number of reviews it's getting, but it's rating has gone up since it ended. It's staying at number 1. It will likely reach the top 10 most popular by number of ppl reviewed at some point.
How much time needs to pass before an anime can be the number 1 on MAL in your opinion? I'm not saying I disagree with you I'm just curious.
@neoparmar2169 recency bias is always a thing even since when Death note was airing. Only time will tell
Top 50 seems fair to me, didn't really vibe with the anime, but can appreciate what it tried to share through its story and characters.
Yes, yes it does
My favourite anime is Steins;Gate and I'm glad it's still ranked #3 after 13 years, but Frieren clearly has more mass appeal while maintaining its consistently high quality.
So while the 0.25 gap it has over FMA:B might be excessive, it's obvious why the series is so popular among both casuals and hardcore fans.
I've seen it and it's less logistically it's more of the intent.
Does Frieren Deserve the Top Ranking Spot on MAL?
Yes.
The premise was interesting but the execution is nothing special it's just good at best
The premise was interesting and the execution is special. It's just the best
??????
they had this convo already. even down to the characters that aren't lewded being more doujin bait
Honestly Frieren is good, but personally I found it a bit flat. Like I watch a lot of drama/slice-of-life anime/movies who focus on like emotions of characters and stuff like that (don’t know to properly call it). And when I first read the summary I was like „hell yea, that’s exactly my type of show“. But when watching it I felt kinda disappointed. You know I feel touched very easily and often even cry over things that aren’t even that emotional. But it’s Frieren I never really felt emotionally touched or like I was about to cry. But it also wasn’t like a that funny or thrilling. It wasn’t really boring but the show kinda just happened. There isn’t anything bad about the show, afterall I still rated it 8/10 on mal but like I said I found the show a bit flat and therefore it is far from being my personal „best anime of all time“
Yeah I agree to some extent. But I am a manga reader and I think season2 will fix some of the problem. It only gets better from now on especially for people who has taste like it.
I think instead of drama. Frieren's emotional beats are very subtle
@@Ash_Wen-lito be fair, you have to have an high IQ to understand Frieren
@@thomasffrench3639 Well to avoid sounding like a Rick and Morty fan. If you passively watch the show, you can miss a lot of subtext
@@Ash_Wen-li sorry I had to. The word “subtle” was staring me in the eye
Yes. Its about as perfect as a story can be. The writing, the music, the character depth, its really beautiful and something i recommend to anyone who enjoys anime, or even just fantasy.
Short answer: No.
Long answer: NOOOOO!!!!
I only have two problems with Frieren and one of them is just personal problem.
#1 I will never understand how there is a bunch of people who don't recognize her, there is statues everywhere, she is in history books, even if you don't recognize her face there is a bunch of people with no reaction after hearing her name, she is elf named Frieren? How can half the people not make that connection.
#2 To be fair this is a personal problem, but every character has a German name that will nearly every time reveal a lot about them and who they are, if you don't speak German its fine, but when they added Draht for example, i knew what he could do cause its just "wire" in English and when they added a Character named Lügner, i already knew where it was going since that just means "Liar", i only choose these two examples out of like 20-30.
But I still think its a fantastic Anime!
Late reply sorry,
-frieren is the laziest being 1000yrs++ doing nothing, but meditating.
-flamme tells her not to be known, only when killing demon king, not before not after.
-The Hero Party kill the demon king, no specific name, if any, "Himmel, and Co"
-not many mages exist realistically relative to other fighter,
- most human that know frieren face already dead, or forget due to age, even dwarfs.
- the hero party statues are not everywhere, himmel's does.
- demon & elf have similar sense of time, they don't care about whats happening to the world, even the seven sages demon don't know who Serie is. 100yr war = weekly scandal, easy to forget.
So yeah frieren is just another name in history book but nobody know who she is what is she looked like, and where she is.
Spoiler,
Ppl in The northern empire already forgotten how the hero party looked like, flamme statue is a man, frieren statue is a sexy elf mage, himmel statue is huge muscular man.
I don't think its the best anime. You all hyping this just watching 1st season. Lets see how it ends. Look FMAB has the best ending of all time. Y'all judged the show after the ending. Same goes for frieren.
FMAB has the best ending of all time??? 😂😂😂😂
No, I’m judging the quality of the show not if it’s ended or not
@@thomasffrench3639 Take attack on titan. Frierens quality is nowhere near attack on titan. But people hate the anime mostly because of the ending. So ending is the most important part. You can't just say it's the best anime without even finishing the story. There are a lot of quality shows but they lost their charm for the bad or average ending.
@@susbedo9258 Search on google and look Its number 1. Search any website or any youtube video for the best anime ending. Fullmetal alchemist is up there.

Is frieren the best anime ever? No, at least not Animation-wise or quality-wise overall. But neither is fmab at it was up there for way longer
Agreed
FMAB had a better case than almost any other anime, including Frieren.
@@za-ir5ni it makes sense as it’s the first anime people watch so they have an attachment to it
@thomasffrench3639 This has always been cope by FMA haters. It immediately was acclaimed by critics when it came out so that debunks that narrative.
@@za-ir5ni I mean it's true tho, because it's not the best anime ever. Too many flaws to say otherwise.
As good as it was, I actually liked Apothecary Diaries a bit more. Either way having 2 first seasons like that is great for the future. Just means more seasons and more Mao Mao and Frieren.
Short answer no
Long answer yes
I remember when Kaguya Sama was ranked 1 on MAL, so really, they can just put anything there
I’m an FMAB fan & even I think Frieren deserves its rank on MAL.
I think Frieren is a little hamgstrung structurally that keeps it from displacing FMA:B from top of all time. Because the nature of Frieren is a Journey more than an adveture. The world is greatly disconnected (taking years rather than days to traverse the country) and the BBEG was already defeated at the start. So there isn't the scaffolding for a plot that can tie all people and things together. Even if we get great, well fleshed-out side characters, we won't have something that justifies us following all of them simultaniously towards one goal. They're mostly all going to come into the story, do their part, and then go their seperate ways. There just isn't the structure for large list of separate arcs, adventures, plot points, etc, to all converge together and dovetail into a single coherent storyline.
Frieren's conflicts are more individual and separated, and I don't see how that can change. So a problem in one place, needs to be solved in that one place, and won't tie in to other places too much. So it's either unresolved as a loose thread, or it gets tied up in a bow and the characters move on. The story can't grow and build up to be massive enough for synergy to form. Fundamentally, this is a journey, not an adventure. And there's nothing wrong with that -that's what it's meant to be, and it's doing it great. But I'd argue that means that... it just can't quite hit as high as a single focused adventure can.
It could maybe be best within the confines of a certain genre. But I just don't see it doing enough to displace what's on top now, because it isn't competing in the biggest traits that make the top stand on top.
It'll rise to number 1 for a while due to recency bias. But in the end I expect it'll settle in the top 10 or so. Which is still a ridiculous achievement.
But it can if it can do that better than what FMAB does what it wants to do, wouldn’t that be the better show?
If it stays 6 months more in the top 1 I doubt it that it's going to fall off, at this point top 3 is basically guaranteed unless another hit anime of the same level appears, Frieren gives me the same vibe of being a 'safe answer' for favorite than FMAB even if it's not finished yet.
It's gaining enaugh reviews, that rank it very highly, that not only it is likely to stay number 1, by rating, it will eventually crack the most popular ranking. It should already have fallen off, and if anything it's rating is going up.
It’s currently my number 2, what will make it #1 is the fallout over the next few years of its impact on anime and culture.
To me Bebop is my number 1, it still holds up all these years later
I mean does FMA deserve the top spot for 15+ years
I think we can all agree that both anime are not our favorite but still are very good
Yes it did because it stood the teat of time for that long.

Not yet? Bro people say that Cowboy Bebop is the GOAT and it only has 26 episodes.
Cowboy Bebop is also 100% done.
@@eldenlord4816 why does that matter? If it’s good, it’s good.
it's moreso to avoid recency bias. Cowboy Bebop has been out for over 20 years, frieren's season 1 hasn't been out for a year yet, so some need to wait and see if it holds up to the test of time
That's because Cowboy Bebop is finished but Frieren feels like it's just getting started. I haven't read the Frieren manga so I don't know how far along the story it is, but imo if the anime is able to maintain it's high quality for at least 1 more season then I can agree that it would deserve the no.1 spot. But for now I think it's a bit too early.
@@oc5446 I don’t see how that’s relevant.
16:49 - The reason Dolphins can R-word humans in the ocean is because they are much more massive, but are very nimble and can twist and turn and control their bodies in water as good as we can control our bodies on land, while we have terrible control over our bodies in water being all slow motion. For a dolphin, R-wording a human in the ocean is as easy as for a human to R-word a comatose patient who sometimes turns in their sleep. You don't even need hands to restrain them.
Incredibly skewed ratings by MAL's recency bias
@darthrap456 recency bias is always a thing even since when death note was airing. Only time will tell
Anime is now mainstream and Frieren is an anime anyone can watch and find something to enjoy even traditionally non-anime fans. So it makes sense that it would reach such a broad level of people that would end up giving it the top spot on MAL
Honestly its the easiest recommendation for any fantasy lover even those who don't watch anime.

"slightly"...
It's decent, but it's not great. It's a slow-paced slice-of-life. It was not as emotional for me as it seems to have been for trash taste hosts. The most interesting characters in the show for me where Denken and Serie, who get a lot less screen-time that the boring main trio.

🤣 Good joke
Great characters, a beautiful story telling and poetic cinematography that nicely convey the theme and messages of the show, and movie-tier animation on top of that.
