Maybe the wire is passing the traffic updates signal or Bluetooth!? GPS units are so cool, I like big fat old Garmin sat navs they remind me of avionics equipment. I remember Tom Tom one ran Linux from the SD card and could be hacked to play music and video :D

Well, Garmin actually does make avionics.

Recently uncovered a complete TomTom GO300 with all accessories (and SD card), although it does not turn on. The GPS clicks onto a suction-cup windshield dock (the eject button is the silver guy in the middle) and this dock passes through power to an identical female barrel jack on the rear. There are numerous pins on the dock connector, so I'm unsure if one of these also happens to transfer a data signal. Restated: the RF port on the GPS underside does NOT mate to a male connector on the dock - but that long dock connector itself IS fully populated and may contain more than just power.
I've imaged the SD card and took a few pictures if anyone is interested. :)

That unknown chip near crystal is probably bluetooth chip made by CSR BlueCore3 and coax is for bluetooth antenna.

The external gps anntenna socket was if you had a car with a anti-glare coating on the windscreen, which interfered with the signal.

Ant connector is for cars with screen heater wires which block RF input
