/ dorodango
Is a great place to share what you make, I'd would love to see it.
You might be asking what is this? here's a link to Wikipedia all about dorodango.
en.m.wikipedia...
The introduction to the film shows the refining and processing of clay. There's plenty of information about how to do that, but there's a link below as well. I usually use already refined clay from local pottery supply stores. You can also buy it online at the link below.
Powdered clay on Amazon:

How to process your own clay:

Other materials:
Dirt/Clay
I used the local soil here in Arizona. Your soil could be completely different ratios of clay, sand, silt, and organic matter. You might try doing a jar test on your soil to help identify what ratios of clay, sand, etc.
Sand
The sand was from a local sand and gravel yard, but sand from Home Depot or your nearby park would do just fine.
Straw
Most people don't even use straw so it's totally optional, I'm using rice straw chopped and screened through 1/8 hardware cloth or screen, but you can use various other fibers such as cut up strings, hemp fibers, dry grass, and many more.
Screens
Sifting can be helpful to process your material, removing rocks and larger debris. It's good to have various sized hardware cloth from the hardware store. Kitchen strainers can work as well as window screen.
The Core
Most people don't start with a dry core, but I find creating a base first that doesn't crack or fall apart to be a bit more reliable. If it's too rich in clay or silt you might want to add sand to reduce the expansion or, add fibers like straw to hold it together. If the soil crumbles and doesn't hold together, then it's probably too rich in sand, silt, or organic matter, and you probably want to add more clay.

Hand Polished
There are many ways to polish clay, but one of the funnest is to just use the friction of your skin and a bit of elbow grease, this can become incredibly shiny.
Screen Texture
To achieve a good result it helps to add fine aggregate or marble dust with the clay, to achieve a thick layer over the core that doesn't crack.
String Texture
Fibers or strings doesn't really matter and a dusting of clay might help to polish it up.
Stamp Texture
You can use any sort of object to get interesting results. The sky is not the limit!

the 360 shot of the finished dorodango looks like a rendered textured looks so unreal
cus it looks like one of those fancy textures that have lighting built into it. Like its a perfect circle but the texture has a rough look to it
So happy to finally share this project! Me and my younger brother or not filmmakers but we try hard, great to see that hard work pays off.
Humble and gifted artists you are!
Yes guys, good stuff! Great balance. Thank you.
Wow guys, you are brilliant!
Maestros de la tierra y del vídeo!!!!
It is amazing, honestly. Truly inspiring and beautifully presented.
One of the best videos i have ever seen
Seriously impressive production from such a tiny channel.
You don't have to be a big channel to have big skills
Having well over 100k subs is pretty big.

@@rlqcm Oh, you're right. Didn't see that lol.
I polish using a very soft cloth... I do mine really old school, like how I did when I was a kid. I've never seen them done this way, outside of using the top of the jar to help round and smooth the surface, but before I ever did that, I learned to make them using my hands alone and only a soft cloth for polishing with fine dust. When it came to making the "core" we would just use soil that had been highly trampled so it was a very fine dust...I was taught different as a kid by my grandfather, we didn't add clay over mixed soil and straw. So, it's interesting to see another technique. :)
No matter the technique used, these are really beautiful! The wabi-sabi of some of them, I just love it.
This is the longest comment I have ever seen
Fantastic answer 🙏✅😀
Finally a video where music, content, and cinematography are beautifully in sync! Will watch multiple times and share. Thank you for producing. Love the old pup near the end.
Much appreciated and honored, thank you, that's my dad's Chow Chow named Ellie she might be arguably the best part of the film.
Well perceived and noted.

...and see the Art that inspires.
I'm waiting with most positive expectations.

Absolutely gorgeous. Film making skills becoming incredible. More, more, more PLZ ;]
Yes, great, please continue in this, its importat to spread the knowledges of natural building. We are sharing this in Slovakia, central Europe. Greetings from Organica, Artur & all the slovakian natural builders:)
So satisfying, I gained a sense of tranquillity from watching both your craft skills and cinematic techniques. Excellent production, thank you for the experience.
You guys are incredible!!! To make something so beautiful from basically dirt! Production value is insane. 🙏 Beautiful!
Beautifully filmed!
Wow. I was completely mesmerized through the whole video!
My brother! You have a great talent n I admire your love n dedication towards your work! Big big like🙏🙏
I love this whole series. So great to see what you guys are up to these days. Hope we get to visit Canelo again soon. Wonderful work!
Hands of artists. Wonderful! I love seeing beauty pulled straight from the earth like this.
Beautiful! I love watching you work!
What happens if you fire them in a kiln ?
fantastic video! This channel just keeps getting better and better!
Thank you Sir🙏 from this old Aussie lady, you have inspired me to build a home for my husband and I. Watching your builds and wall treatment clips has taught me that, this method of building is a ‘meditation ‘ of construction resulting in a grounded Healthy living space as opposed to a ‘stress build ‘ giving us a toxic space. Your spaces are where I see myself CONNECTED with the people around me and Mother Earth, give back to our land and be able to afford a whole house by saving on labour and a lot of materials.
I love learning from you. You have such a chill, high def and relaxing working area on the screen. Just, thank you for existing.
Ditto
this video is perfection! can i work with you? haha. i would like a dorodango tutorial about the dry process. i make one a couple years ago and now i can't do it in my last one. :(
Thank you for sharing the new video with us. Great techniques! I especially enjoyed the fiber texture and the screen texture.
I've always thought dorodango was a great work of art and you made it a lot better with your filmography! My favorite out of all of those was the Screen one!
EXTRA WONDERFUL👏🏼
Love it friends! I'm coming to New Mexico it seems!!!! I'll check you out!
This is so gorgeous! I’m amazed by how captivating you’ve made balls of mud.
I wonder if you could use fine metal cutting residue then when done mist it till it rusts?
Super nice work guys!!!!.....Un abrazo desde Colombia!!!
Top quality film making, editing, style, your choice to keep the sound natural with very little unnecessary noise, all to create a beautiful end product. I am a painter. I came to see the textures. Will be implementing many of your techniques into my work. Is that your mom in the other video? I'm guessing you got at least some of your excellence in everything you do from her. You should all be proud. You are artists and fine storytellers. Thank you so much for sharing. Your work is so appreciated. I hope you guys continue your work together. In my idealistic mind, I hope you all as a family figure out a way to stay on your land, creating beautiful works that you can sell and spend your lives happily together instead of working some horrible nine to five job. Best of luck to you all!
I love how the camera focuses on the hands, the hands always in motion, like a magician's.
Very like
Thank you for that beautiful video. Can't wait to have one done about earth floor...
does these crack over time? can you fire them in a kiln? try gold flakes or powder?
It merge with the others till it's gone
Thank you for the amazing videos! I love to learn and try that kind of things. Greetings from Estonia! Keep up the good work! 👏
Really amazing and beautiful work. My boys and I are trying to follow your method, with less stellar results so far, and we all were wondering kind of jar are you using. We haven't found one yet with just the right edge to the lip like yours seems to have.
“I think we..I think we’ll have something.” God damn right you do. This channel is an aphrodisiac of earth, hands, and cinematography.
Mind blown... I ♡ all your mastery, never stop. The production is first class. Thank you for sharing
This video is a cinematic masterpiece
You made those cubemap balls from every video game's debug mode.
I’m going to watch multiple times. Sure I’m gonna make a few of these cool things, but the music is hitting my head just right 🙂
Try using powdered graphite as a final coating. Dirty but shiny. Get it a stores that cut keys.
You're on to something!
do you let the cores dry for a longer period of time before applying new layers ? can it be done without clay powder ?
Los amo!
This is so beautiful. Making a dorodango is definitely on my bucket list now.
Usta görüntüler, yapılan işçilik, müzikler her şey sanat filmi gibi. Çok başarılı, tebrik ederim.
i am so impressed by the skill level both Film & Clay that i am almost scared it migth become so laborious you will get discourage and produce fewer content. Till that day comes know your work is thoroughly appreciated. And may that day be very very far into a futur none will see
yao man that's incredible.. keep up the art work..
I found your channel by random chance. Your cinematography is beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful, thanx for showing us other dorodango types 😁
Absolutely refreshing. I love you guys. Thank you so much for sharing what everyone should see. Your work is just beautiful. Filming and editing is great, too. I am now inspired to get on with my projects. Thank you. Thank you!
Thanks for the music credits at the end, but was the song that opened the video?
filmstro.com it's kind of like a poor man's composer app, so I can't really call it my own music or a name to it, definitely a gray Zone.
Wow. A beautiful handcraft, beautifully shot.
Do you fire them at any point in the process? Just wondering how they hold their shape and what happens if they fall 😁 Amazing video!!! Great production quality!! 👌
Awesome mate
absolutely amaaazzziiinngggg!!!
I love you!
Watching your videos made me realise I was doing was dorodango, like I’ve been doing it since I was 5 because I thought it fun, I never realised it was an actual art lol.
Dude!!! This is the best!! Finally there's a video detailing how to get these textures!! This is amazing work! Thank you!
Hoping for more such videos!
Saya suka dengan karya anda. Sangat mengesankan. Teruslah berkarya dengan apa yang anda bisa.
Saya adalah seorang mengkoleksi tanah, batu dan pasir dari berbagai daerah.
Video anda menginspirasi saya untuk terus berkarya
@8:40 it looks like a dino egg 🥚 (or maybe a Kidney Stone from an Elephant!) LoL. Cool work but they don't make very good cannon balls, not even for a potato gun.
Artistically they look amazing.
But how does the inside look :O cut one in half :O

My kid & I really want to start making these. What type of pigment do you use to color them?
And what type of "clay powder" was the white powder? Does it matter what type of clay?
You were on my recommended page! Traffic incoming! You have also inspired me to do this... One more thing, could you make a DEATH STAR one with combined stamp and string technique??? :D
Detail information combined with high quality video, seriously great channel👍🏻. Lucky i'm not obsessed with subscriber number😁
we live in an old remodeled and added onto adobe house with rammed earth walls and retaining walls. Your videos are a true inspiration and thank you for making them. Not only are the materials beautiful but you have broaden my horizon and excited my imagination. Thank You!
This is completely beautiful and peaceful... I was thinking of offering this as a workshop in some communities in Mexico, I would like to know how much time it is recommended to let dry before start to polish the ball... Thank you for the forward 🙏✨️ thank you for the inspiration 🤎
i bet you could make all sorts of things with the string technique.
like cranes and peacocks, horses and wolves, dolphines and fish
maybe even writting or landscapes like stylized tree's and bushes or flowers
even dragons or cartoon characters
you could even stamp it before you took the string out for even more layers.
put a bell inside of a dorodango?
the string texture is what i imagine a single piece of dirt to look like under a microscope. very nice.
Awesome camera-work to whomever did that. (Not that these balls aren't awesome but I have no idea of clay-balls even tho they are beautiful and make me wanna play in the dirt as an adult again).
I often watch this video, I love it so much. Informative and relaxing. Super quality.
What music is the first track?
It doesn't say af the end. It's such calming music I'd like to add it to my play list.
Not impressed. I prefer to make my Dorodango balls natural; with the shine and textures attained from the soil they come from. That’s what makes them unique. ❤️
Love ur videos, but don't really understand the purpose for a lot of this video as it didn't really accomplish much other than provide a interesting visual context, as u really don't learn how to do anything.?? Just saying.
Hello team, we would like to share your content on our Facebook platform, we have 22 million user base. We could blgive our users the best of your content. We only need your approval to use your content and will surely give you proper credits. Thank you !!!
It would be cool to see someone make the planets in our solar system out of these things. Earth and Jupiter in particular would be neet.
The video production is stunning. Amazing job all the way around!
for me the question is not HOW but WHY?? WHY MAKE clay balls, textured or not
I love house planting. I have tons of bags of different soil and sand moss etc I also have bags or packages of clay for making anything art household replacement parts etc. and I can’t believe I already have different colours of mica all different colours and kinda mica flakes etc. I wonder what would be better. Mixing the plaint soil with sand then dry out some clay and get it to a powder form adding it to the soil and to use to shine it etc. or just go outside and dig up some dirt 🤷🏼♀️
Very very nice man!
I want to hear the guitar/acoustic and drums do some Gypsy Flamenco.
...and see the Art that inspires.
I'm waiting with most positive expectations.

My first experience with these was through buying/trading mineral spheres, people would use these dorodangos to scam people as they arent as valuable as the actual products. had no idea it was a whole thing people did outside of scamming.
WOW! Fantastic! Thank you for share this amazing craft :) Hugs from Uruguay
Beautiful content, thank you for sharing. Your channel brings me so much peace and joy
For the final colour of a dorodango ball, can almost any coloured powdery substance be used, or must it be powder clay or another specific form of powdered substance? Also when you start your core and mention the ratios of how many parts clay to sand to water, is there a specific measurement and are your measurements by weight or volume?
In the comments section of another video of yours a lady advised you to wear a mask to protect your lungs. I really hope you will take that advice.your works are fabulous
Outstanding
Just started working on my first dorodango today, I hope it will look at least a fracture of how great yours do!
im just now learning about these and i didnt know hand polishing was a method. it looks really cool.
I guess these Dorodango balls are great practice in general for any clay projects that you do. Skills carry over right?
best youtube channel!!!
What the hell did I just watch? I’m really confused but I’m still happy?
5 years later to say that the filmography of this video its 99% of the video.
Also, nice balls.
Why do the 360 shot make them look like they came straight out of blender😭
Incredible video
All I kept on thinking was "Michelle, ma belle..." 😂
Yess more nito!!
I love this. Is there a practical building application of these techniques or just art?
Beautiful
I don’t even know what a dorodango is but very cool video
what size sifter do you use to get the clay dust? can you use a flour sifter?
Thanks for sharing what you do.
I did this a couple of years ago with kids. I happen to use a picture of one of them as my instagram profile pic.
