The “*SA” “SA” and “PA” are the Indian names for the scale. It is exactly like Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do but they call it Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Da Ni Sa*. Sa stands for root and Pa stands for fifth. Sa with the white dot below it stands for root an octave lower. That is the tuning of the drone instrument they use which is also on the panel of this synth. To get the best resonance you need to tune the strings (or osc’s) perfectly to just intonation to get the best overtone singing.
thank you for explaining how to use the shruti box. I think you explained it a little more efficiently than I did. I just hope the user of this youtube video sees your comment, as that is exactly correct
is there any way I can show you how to use this shruti box so you can get a nice beautiful sound? I have had years of experience tuning old shruti boxes like these for my father since he was a trained south Indian classical singer. this shruti box's main objective is to be used as a tambura (a drone instrument) in order to provide the main key/pitch for the singer. the first note is pa, the 5th note of the scale (you may know it as So in the western scale. the second and third note is higher octave Sa, which will be the 8th note( It is the Do that is higher than So of the scale). At 3:05, the third note is supposed to be in the same octave as the second note. like I said, the second and third note is the exact same note in the exact same octave. Lastly, the 4th note is a lower octave Sa, which basically the Do lower than the So in the scale. The 4th/last note is the first note of the scale, which you correctly put around 3:00. Altogether, you have Pa-Sa-Sa-sa (or So-Do-Do-do in western). would you be able to do another video of this particular shruti box, only this time following the instructions that I gave? if so, can you try a Key like B or C as the Sa/Do and adjust the Pa/So accordingly. if you'd like to hear more from me about it, could you possibly share your fb name or email so I can give you more of an idea of what I am talking about? if you are confused, I can always use messenger or email to send you an audio recording of what it would sound like
These were available in the early and mid 90s. Here in the United States they were sold via Mid-east Manufacturing. Found an old photo of this model in their catalog. They sold for $360 per their 1997 price list. They also sold the Radel models too.
@@videocurcuits do you have any schematics or board images? I'm trying to understand one of the Radel ones, but the envelope/VCAs are potted up on a daughter board.
For the last two years, I have looked all over the world for that little box. I think you may have gotten the last one in existence. It is so freakin dope. I can't even handle how rad it is. Just amazing.
This is probably the third comment from me in a row in this section. But I wanted to make a correction looking back at your video. This Shruti box/tambura was actually not made by radel/raj musicals. AS CLEARLY LABELED ON THE INSTRUMENT ITSELF, it was made by SUR, which later became known as Raagini. This is one of Raagini's earliest invention using the synth sound before transitioning to what would actually sound like a natural tambura.
I'd offer you $350 for it, I'm located in the US and have an eBay & Reverb accounts with a ton of transactions on them. Can't find anything about this thing anywhere. Just figure its a strong enough offer that maybe you'd be more interested in something to replace it since it's such a dominant sound. Anyways, thanks for the inspiration!
@@indiaanalog5316 this is not the same exact instrument as seen in the video. what you had attached was something completely different from this. while they are both electronic tamburas, I was referring to what was actually seen on the video. please be a little more accurate with your search.
