Fun Fact: When Awdry wrote the books, he didn't want to write characters who were always kind and caring. He wanted them to be realistic, rude, and sometimes spiteful but also kind and caring.
Dr Destiny No,only Henry & Edward were taken out of the Steam Team, but yeah. The only reason they were taken out was because they wanted more females in the team.
21:48 Tophamm wasn’t the one who sent Oliver for scrap. Oliver was owned by a different railway company that wanted to scrap him, Douglas helped him escape TO Sir Tophamm Hatt’s railway. This is better explained in the Railway Series books (for those who don’t know, its the book series the show is based on).
That’s right, it is better explained in the Railway Series. Oliver and Toad, along with an autocoach named Isabel, run away from British Railways in hot pursuit of a better life on Sodor. Unfortunately, the diesels eventually catch them in the act and send them straight to the scrapyard, leading up to the plot of the episode.
The book that this episode was based on was written in the 1960's, which was when a lot of countries were scrapping their steam locomotive. That speck of realism really helps some of the episodes feel like they actually happened.
Fun Fact: In one railway series story, Gordon learns that he is one of only two survivors of his engine class in the world, with the other engine being Flying Scotsman.
TO BE FAIR, the fat controller did arrange for a visit from flying Scotsman so Gordon wouldn't feel depressed anymore. It really shows how considerate he is
That episode with Duke legit terrified me as a kid, i did not know he was eventually rescued so that's good to know. And oms i remember that Diesel graveyard thing it terrified me, but i also kind of loved it too because it was dark and spooky and now that i'm typing this i think this is where my love of horror began because it is pretty spooky.
What really appealed me to Thomas was the cinematography of this show. The use of a 35 mm camera with the old film reel gives a very different style as opposed to digital film (I could be wrong, so someone could correct me about that). But visually, the series had immense changes of styles, especially for the darker episodes. It gave such breadth and dimension into making these models very realistic and gritty, like a railway operation. And the darker episodes were convincingly eerie and I enjoyed it.
No you’re right, specifically the Clearwater Periscope film camera, with a lens pointing down to reach the sets at eye level. The playing with tone is definitely a trait of the director David Mitton
We’ll all miss the following stars who created, narrated, voiced, or acted in the Thomas And Friends show/movies who are sadly deceased: George Carlin, Micheal Angelis, Doug Lenox, Peter Fonda, Mr Perkins (aka Ben Forster), John Hurt, David Mitton, George Awdry, Russell Means, and the Rev. W Awdry him self.
WAIT A MINUET!!!!!!!!!! GEORGE CARLIN WAS ON THOMAS THE FREAKING TANK ENGINE!!!!! THIS GEORGE CARLIN- ruclips.net/video/tVlkxrNlp10/видео.html I mean out of all the people they could get to do narrations on Thomas. They go for the most profane comedian on planet Earth who often made Jokes about Suicide and swearing more than Eminem (The Rapper) on steroids....... It's almost the equivalent of Louie C.K (ruclips.net/video/XLGzFQg_1xc/видео.html) being on a childrens show like Arthur or having The Simpsons make a cameo appearance on Sesame Street (Which actually happened BTW- ruclips.net/video/OHPWQvLVzaA/видео.html) Huh....... You learn something new everyday.
Dylan Smith according the Carlin, the reason he wanted to narrate Thomas and friends his to show a different side of him. Sorta’ve a new thing to break the mold. Mainly just subvert how people normally see him.
This really did put a smile on my face. The Thomas series, or at least it's classic days, didn't back away from showing kids reality and used it to tell compelling stories. Think about it; most kids shows are full of fantasy elements and play it safe, focusing on telling morals and educating young children. Thomas is an exception. It's grounded in reality, but shows that it can be interesting in it's own right. The atmosphere is a major part of the fun and in a minor way teaches kids and adults what the world truly has to offer. Most stories don't tell morals or anything, but just focus on having a good story to tell. It's not afraid to get dark or try new things, especially with an interesting and large cast of characters. Everyone's a ''main character'' in the classic series and attention is spread evenly. Thomas himself is more-so a flawed but kind-hearted hero, being a more realistic one too. Nobody's flawless and Thomas is a prime example of it. There's even character arcs and multi-part episodes with stakes that are pretty high. It's just so beautiful and likely was Awdry's original intent with the series. Considering that Sodor is a safe heaven for engines where they don't have to worry about being scrapped on other railways (ones in OUR world mind you) pounds everything into reality. Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends is one of the most inspirational, unique and heartwarming shows out there and is one of my very first memories and childhood. Thank you for bringing the classic series back into the spotlight for a bit, and on it's 75th anniversary too.
Thank you so much for that wonderful comment, I couldn't have said it better myself! I still love Thomas exactly for that reason! They're all realistic and take their audience, whether they be kids or adults seriously. As a child I was amazed that the characters didn't talk down to me like other shows. My first Thomas VHS was "Races Rescues and Runaways" and the first episode I watched was "Toby and the Flood". At first I was scared about what would happened, but as I kept watching I began to realize that this was unlike anything I had seen in my life (I was 3 years old okay). I loved it so much that even to this day I like watching classic Thomas episodes. In fact, I'm going to show my baby niece some of the classic episodes to get her started.
I can easily clear up Oliver’s situation. Oliver wasn’t owned by The Fat Controller. He was owned by British rail, and he was in the main station yard just outside of Sodor. So he was owned by BR, not Sodor. the steam engines were being replaced by diesels when Oliver tried to escape to Sodor. Douglas went just outside of Sodor to deliver those goods, and he came across Oliver. The Fat Controller would have saved any engine if he could.
Thomas and Friends WAS MY CHILDHOOD. Growing up in the early 2000s, and having only seen a handful of classic Thomas episodes, I had no idea how dark, and fascinating this show was. Yes it was for kids, but the show was never afraid to dive into darker themes for the sake of a good, meaningful story. Thomas made my childhood, and it impacted my life in the best way. I'll always be a Thomas and Friends fan.
It was my #1 childhood! I love it still to this day. Along with the movie Thomas and the Magic Railroad which, I think, is a criminally underrated gem and classic. It's now on Blu-ray and the Director's Cut that every fan asked for finally came. It just had it's 20th Anniversary!
7:27 if you're a British railway history geek, this will be even more chilling as it's almost directly copied from the deadly Newtons Abbot crash of 1876 where real people actually died, dozens of them, and the only difference is that at Abbot the semaphore arm froze, not the points
Fun Fact: The Fat Controller *NEVER* scraps his Engines, in fact, the North Western Railway is a place for EVERY ENGINE TO FEEL SAFE FROM GETTING SCRAPPED, Oliver was rescued from THE MAINLAND RAILWAY, not from TFC. PS: It's funny how you say he's the grim reaper of the Railway but you show STEPNEY GETTING SAVED BY HIM. PS 2: Trevor isn't from TFC's railway, he's just a traction engine that has his own boss, not being TFC.
There's a fan theory I heard that's similar to that. It's that Sir Tompham Hat is planning to keep the steam engines working for a LONG time and eventually when they mean no use to him or just keep flat out disobeying him, he disposes of them! 😮☹️😭
Oliver is from the mainland. The "other railway" on the mainland couldn't afford to keep him running. The original author based escape off of mass dieselization in the 1960's when coal bunkers and water towers were replaced with diesel tanks that's why Oliver ran away to Sodor because Topham sees the engines as family and went through the trouble to help make the island a heritage site with his friends in the Sodor government.
1:29 this scene always freaked me out as a kid and I got to give props to the set designers. The eerie red lighting, the intense dark vignette, the fog and smoke, and the faceless train going on by without a word… definitely ingrained into my head!
@@cellychu9266 Because in season 6 the show experienced a severe downgrade in visual quality. All of the models had an ugly matte finish and the sets had extremely flat lighting that gave everything a really gross greyish-tint. Season 7 was a little better though IMO.
@@TheEldritchHyena That's because of the film, Britt Alcroft resigned from her own company because of how it basically failed. And I think she and David Mitton had a bit of a stormy relationship while the show was still in production in its prime.

I remember having the tapes. Over here, the series was narrated by George Carlin and later Alec Baldwin. But I do remember nearly every episode on this list.
Ringo narrated them in the U.S. first. He played Mr. Conductor in Season 1 of Shining Time Station with George Carlin playing the role in Seasons 2 and 3
For those of you who think that Thomas is a show like Barney or Teletubbies that's only for little children and doesn't have any substance for older viewers, the episodes in this video should prove otherwise. A former description for the Nightmare Fuel page on TvTropes even described Thomas as "A series where perfectly sentient beings are cut up while still alive, abandoned for years in places where nobody else can find them while they helplessly rot away, other people's incompetence can get you killed and have you blamed for it, and even some of your coworkers are out to have you killed. This is a series for children." Also, as for "Break Van/Donald and Douglas" in the honorable mentions, the Spiteful Brake Van was in fact, trying to get Douglas sent away and scrapped by slowing down his trains to make him look bad. The reason being was that Donald had smuggled Douglas to Sodor to prevent him from being scrapped, and since Sir Topham Hatt was only expecting one engine at the time, he gave the twins a trial. Whichever twin was more useful would stay on Sodor, and the less useful twin would be sent away and scrapped. The Spiteful Brake Van nearly succeeded in his plan when Donald crashed into a signal box, but he ended up being crushed by the very engine he was trying to get sent away when he and the Troublesome Trucks slowed James' down.
Scaredy Engine: Am I a joke to you? Seriously, just because an episode is scary, doesn't make it halloween. I think Scaredy engine is the true first halloween themed episode.
I had that response to a few of the early episodes (Series 1-7); if we’re counting off of this list, Boulder sure but Toby and the Flood always affected me, not least because of how my utter terror of torrential floods has carried over to adulthood.
the one with the chains scared the shit out of me as a kid but i absolutely adored that episode. i watched it over and over till my mom turned it to a different one lmao
4:23 I like how you actively point out Thomas's duality here! Something the CGI series (and many parents) often forgot was just how much of a jerk Thomas actually was! No matter how far the series progressed, he never truly lost that side of himself!
That was the episode that got me cowering behind the sofa when I was a child. I can appreciate it more as an adult now. Saddens me to see that this show got dumbed down to generic toddler show rather than the well rounded kids show I knew as a child that didn't talk down to the kids or have learning segments that most likely insulted the toddlers intelligence. If you've seen James A Williams's video of him watching a series 8 DVD, you'll know what I mean.
Here's the thing: its never addressed if Smudger (the engine Duke said was turned into a generator) was dug out of the dirt and shrubs that built up over the years, or if he's still there to this day. Poor guy.
It was never stated by Duke in Granpuff that Smudger (or Stanley as the original story referred to the character in The Railway Series) that he even exists or not as its left intentionally ambiguous and up to your interpretation.
Fun fact about The Flying Kipper: The original story from The Railway Series plays the crash scene off in a light-hearted almost goofy manner, having the guard of the brakevan Henry crashed into complaining about Henry making spill his cocoa. When adapting it for TV, Britt Allcroft and David Mitton decided to remove the silliness of this scene entirely and played it completely straight, which I heavily respect.
I remember when they were talking about a WWII Thomas live action film a few years back and about making it dark, or appealing to adult fans and younger ones, they should use these as inspirations. I always thought the Ringo Starr and George Carlin era had some dark moments but I never noticed it be this dark. Because I only saw those two narrators.
I remember that. It was apparently cancelled, now the director of World War Z is directing a live action Thomas Movie. I do wish we had gotten some hints about the old plot.
I have memories of watching these episodes on VHS at 10:30 at night, alone at my grandmas house and it scared the crap out of me. but in all seriousness I have to appreciate the hard work that was put into those creepy landscapes. Dear Thomas you will always have a special place in my memories
I was always aware of how dark it was. I was constantly scared or had anxiety from watching the episodes. I have a story from a few years ago when I was 11. I watched the Halloween special the day before to get a feeling of nostalgia and pleasure. That night, I woke up with a bloody nose and I looked into my brothers pitch dark room and while I was waiting for my nose to heal, I remembered the Percy and the Haunted Mine episode and I immediately started getting chills. That brought in a summer of anxiety and fear of the unknown. I don’t know if my anxiety at the time was giving me slight schizophrenia or bad paranoia or what, but I’m better now and are still getting good nostalgic flashbacks whenever I think of the Britt Productions intro
Fun Fact: The Flying Kipper Incident was caused by the frozen ballast that prevented the points from being switched not the points themselves because the signalman did indeed switch the points but the frozen ballast which is the gravel you put the railway tracks to provide stability for the railway tracks themselves prevented the frozen points from being changed which resulted in Henry crashing in the first place.
Quite an interesting video. It was cool seeing one of my favorite channels turn a spin on the subject of "dark" children's episodes, but actually acknowledging the risks that the show took and how it prevailed with that. Most videos about dark TTTE episodes are just clickbaity, bad messes. However, this made a good commentary and respected the source material, aside from the assumptions about The Fat Controller being an evil sociopath, but there's plenty of other comments about that. Great video, Strider, and thanks again for respecting this great show.
I always find Darkest Kid's shows so fascinating and slightly spooky. Especially the older ones from the 80s and 90s. Good to see another collaboration of PhantomStrider and BlameitonJorge. (Rip Michael Angelis)
This show: ruclips.net/video/jyCBrRuG_GQ/видео.html Was made in Norway in 1969, but was deemed unsuitable for children in the 90s because it was too scary and nonsensical. Apparently it wasn't meant to be so scary, but due to the mood, being black and white, and more, many find it creepy to this day..!
I find this show interesting now. It’s painted as a vary real place with flaws, and dark unfair issues the trains try to keep in the background of their world just as we do because we feel like there is nothing we can do about it. I also like that no character is the wise man you can always trust, just like real people. Sometimes they are the responsible adult you have hired and entrusted with your vary expensive trains, and then it varies from there. Like when they get butt hurt that their ghost story didn’t scare a train so they go out of their way to scare the crap out of him
I once tried to eat a Thomas toy when I was 3. Until I was 5 I was terrified of Thomas toys. I would cry whenever I saw one. Than one day I lost my fear and to this day I can name an embarrassing amount of Thomas trains. Also I like the episodes where Harold the Helicopter brings tea.
As a kid I remember that even though I loved Thomas as a kid with asperger syndrome, I was also terrified of the show, and it's little wonder why. One of the few instances of me as a dumb kid being scared of something that was actually justified and not embarrassing to think about as an adult.
@@lovelysartstudio8299 well Hellraiser kinda is like that with the BDSM theme but it's more horrifying and gory than something that turns one on, but yeah LMAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video, Strider. Thomas is one of my favorite franchises of all time. It is so great to see you make a video right now, especially during a time when the show has never been worse. There is literally flying cars in Thomas now... Yikes. Rest in peace, Michael Angelis. You will be missed.
Grandpuff is a lot more disturbing when you realize that Smudger was also probably buried alive by those landslides and is most likely still buried since he hasn't been seen in any other episode.
I would like to point out that Oliver was escaping from Britain’s purge of steam engines, as they were being scrapped in insane numbers when Diesel engines became a thing. It’s best explored more in-depth in The Railway Series. It’s still pretty dark that a children’s series was able to highlight the sad reality of British Rail’s (mis)treatment of steam power during the 50’s and ESPECIALLY during the 60’s. The author of the original series, the late Rev. W. Awdry, was a huge railway buff and enthusiast, which is why the series was well-grounded in reality early on.
To clear everyones minds off: -the island of sodor is the only safe haven for steam engines -the engines aren't slaves there working to 1 help the people of sodor and 2 be a really useful engine -sir topham hat is an authority figure not a evil villain -no one was hurt as the narrator usually says
“These engines are sometimes punished for their poor behavior by sir topham hat, the true villain” - shows three examples that had nothing to do with him, hell none of them were even punishments
yeah that’s why this video is so cringey to me, they get so many things so wrong just to be dramatic or something?? it honestly just completely misses what it was meant to be
@@BUnitMN-T yeah that’s why this video is so cringey to me, they get so many things so wrong just to be dramatic or something?? it honestly just completely misses what it was meant to be
LOL I had to watch one of those new episodes the other day with my baby sister and the entire time I was just sitting there wondering why the fuck they need a breakdown train when they can voluntarily derail themselves and are suddenly able to jump between tracks when half of the accidents in the previous 20 seasons or so prior could have been completely avoided by this weird jumping mechanism with no explanation.
That is very true, but to be fair, a lot of content from the books was left out in the show adaptation. They mention "The Other Railway" a lot of the show, but unlike the books which I'm pretty sure mentions British Railways by name, the show NEVER mentions BR. So it wouldn't be too farfetched for someone who has never read the books to think Topham is a monster. @@mbcmechachu
I wouldn't be surprised, but to be fair a lot of people likely don't know the show is based on a book series. I can't really fault them on that.@@fanofeverything30465
To me personally, the creepiest episode of the entire series would have to be "Escape". When I first saw it as a kid, I didn't really think much of it, other than it was very unsettling. Upon viewing it now as an adult, it actually scares me now than it did when I was little. Looking back on it now, Douglas put his own life on the line (quite literally) in order to save Oliver and Toad from being turned into scrap. And also, they were stopped at a checkpoint and nearly caught by the security. They had to lie in order to get out of there. But luckily, they made it out of there and Sir Topham Hatt took Oliver and Toad in as one of his own engines. It's creepily similar to when people go into hiding during wartime and the people helping them risk their own lives. This episode perfectly mirrors it. And I didn't realize that the place where they were being held wasn't owned by Sir Topham Hatt, almost like a prison.
For escape look into the railway series books and you will find out that sir Topham hatt didn't put Oliver there in the first place he was trying to escape the scrapping of steam locomotives in the UK in the 1960s
@Jaz Zy I wouldn't take small props and things too literally I think they just used anything that looked "right for the time" to create the look they were going for
As a child I absolutely loved this series and didn’t realise how dark it was sometimes…now as an adult however I do occasionally question what exactly I was watching back then 😅😂
I've made a review about this top 10 list of yours, since that I myself am a Thomas fan myself, and that there are somethings I feel like semi-critiquing this video. The Intro into the list: I mostly agree with the intro before the list as it isn't wrong, though a few things are that the Railway Series (which will play a part in this review) is actually older than the Television Series, which is why recently it was celebrated for becoming 75 years old. and the Fat Controler doesn't always give out orders for them to be scrapped or such, he mainly wants to preserve the locomotives, which I might speak more about later in the review. No. 10: Edward actually just mentions the one engine that went to the smelters, looking for it's lost whistle (this will be played later). Duck was involved in the graveyard shift, the clip even mentions him (though Strider probably forgot to put him in the script). It wasn't just the chains that spooked Thomas, it was mainly an old whistle that was set off by his steam, it's even a used for a clip in this video. other than another nitpick (which I'll speak at the end of the review), the discussion of the choice is decent. No. 9: There isn't much wrong with this one, how Strider and Jorge both explain how Thomas himself is a "flawed character" was a decent touch, as he is one. No. 8: I was going to talk about this one, but after rewatching the spot, it's mostly fine, though in the original story the episode was based on, when Duke is in the shed, he thought "where is my grace?" referring to the duke of Sodor that his namesake is after, it's explained that the Duke DIED in the war (probably WW2) and the new Duke hadn't heard about him. that's at least a bit darker than the original episode, though then again, it sounds a bit shoehorned in. No. 7: ah yes, the Henry episode where he crashes. The Flying kipper actually has supplies FROM the docks, TO the Mainland. He was mostly shocked when he crashed into the break van, though it's hard to see in the clip when he crashes into it, he is wearing his shocked face mask. Although you say that he got modified, you still say he's his "old self", despite the fact, before his welsh coal, he felt miserable, might be a script error though. At least the message at the end of the spot was good. No. 6: "also presumably sentient train cars", they are in fact sentient, sure there are some that aren't, but those ones are in fact sentient. The reason why they are so harsh on the trucks in the series is that they can either be easily replaced or fixed and they mostly always show the carnage they are involved with. Narrow Guage trucks are probably not too heavy to pull back up from a swamp. Probably why they want to teach Duncan a lesson is because in the past he had been fairly troublesome himself, especially when he first came to the island. They slightly have a valid reason to be jerks to Duncan, as he had been a jerk to them. No. 5: They probably tell the spooky stories to keep children (and perhaps adults) entertained for the most part, least that's what I'd assume. "Sign of a DARK Mist", he actually says something along the lines of "Whenever a/that owl hoots, a mist rolls in". The Fogman's Coat wasn't even left on the track, it was on a branch, you even show a clip of that too. And also it was just probably left there anyway before Henry approached the line. The Trucks crashed through the gate on a second trip, as it's apparently not mentioned in the spot. I explained the reason for the truck crash in No. 6, though you might be right about the crash possibly being expensive, in-universe that is. Have you even watched the episode, one of the trucks say that Henry is spooked and shit. No. 4: The trucks are probably just at the mine cause plot convenience and shit. other than that explanation, not much else for this spot. No. 3: Locomotives can be destroyed for sure, especially Toby as most of his body is wood. Legit there isn't much for me to say about this spot, the explanation is fairly spot-on. No. 2: I can agree with you about characters in the episode being "thick-headed" about bolder on that mountain, though at the beginning of the episode it looked like the bolder was doing fairly fine, though due to the mining it moved off its perch. The Indiana Jones theme with Bolder has been done a fair bit of times now, but I mostly expected it. The bolder was placed at the new site so that it wouldn't move again. there was one other BOTHERSOME nitpick I had with this spot, but I'm still gonna save it at the end. and the message at the end of this spot was pretty good too. Honorable Mentions: Good thing you didn't have The Sad Story of Henry at the end of the list, though honestly, it is disturbing. Henry "went into a TUNNEL". And STH isn't all that evil, refer to the into bit. Also kudos to saying he legit got out in the next episode (Although the time between episodes doesn't always mean it happened after the previous story). I honestly think that Stepney gets lost would have been nice to see on the list, though you did already feature that AND The Sad Story of Henry on a previous list. I mostly agree with the Breakvan mention, but 2 things get on my nerves with the spot; you used Carlin narration when the van was breaking, but then you use Ringo narration when STH said "I don't know, I really don't know", this list mainly uses UK narration. and A BREAKVAN ISN'T A LOCOMOTIVE, though that could have been another script error. and STH wasn't so chipper about a Locomotive that he decided to keep over the other one broke a Breakvan of his. No. 1: As I've said, STH mostly prefers not to scrap his engines because of preservation. "Apparently Edward met Trevor by saving him from being scrapped", apparently "Saved from Scrap" is a isn't an episode apparently. For goodness sake, in the original Railway Series story, Douglas was sent to THE MAINLAND and ended up meeting Oliver there, sure it wasn't explained well where the diesel yard was in the episode, but it sure wasn't even apart of his railway. Engines mostly prefer to work, if they don't wanna, they don't wanna, not that they just get scrapped then and there. STH is not a damn grim reaper, if he wanted to modernize, he would have scrapped all his steam engines and get diesels, but he doesn't. finally, we get to what I've been angry about, THE WHOLE RAILWAY ISN'T A STATION, NOR ARE SHEDS, A STATION IS LIKE KNAPFORD STATION, NOT TIDMOUTH S H E D S! but at least you say that the score was good. the show writers didn't write the part where Douglas saves Oliver from scrap. It's good that you paid homage to Micheal Angelis, though I myself am American and I didn't hear his narration when I was little, I watched the old UK episodes on youtube sometime in 2019, and it's also appreciated that you mention why the show has a large adult following, sure it can be said that the episodes were made with great care and great narration, but don't forget that the railway series was a bit more mature too. May Mr. Angelis rest easy.
STH never ever thinks of scrapping his Engines... It's against Sodor's policy of being a place where every Engine, Steamie or Diesel can feel safe about getting scrapped...
Duncan was spooked because he was being an Absolute jerk to Rusty And Oliver wasn't originally owned by Sir Toppam Hat. Who would never scrap one of his engines
Toby and the flood TERRIFIED me when I was younger. Toby's reaction is basically mine when I watched it. My mum had to explain Floods don't usually take place where I live so I'd stop panicking.
YES. YES. YES. YES. HE TALKS ABOUT IT YES. One of my fav RUclipsrs and biggest inspirations talking about one of my top 3 favorite shows 😌and it’s charmingly sometimes dark content and themes
What's worse about the engines being scrapped is that when an engine is no longer able to live it's living course it's body is recycled and reused. So basically it's when an engine dies. What's darker is that Thomas actually shows desires of wanting to be scrapped too. In Thomas and Friends: The Great Race, Thomas and Ashima sing a song called "You Can Only Be You". While Ashima tries to tell him that he is fine the way he is, at one point Thomas sings "Break me, shake me, Take me all apart, There has to be A better place to start". In Thomas and Friends: Journey Beyond Sodor, Thomas at one point says "No, Theo. I'm not being scrapped. But... (sigh) I probably should be." Poor Thomas.
Wumpus, actually, most of the stuff involving scrap isn’t true. Oliver was saved from the other railway, or British Railways in real life. Trevor was owned by a farmer, not TFCR.
I watched all of these as a kid, and had a fair few nightmares I tell you… but the Duncan/Henry ones both STILL create a bit of fear me and I’m a grown adult now🤣

The book that this episode was based on was written in the 1960's, which was when a lot of countries were scrapping their steam locomotive. That speck of realism really helps some of the episodes feel like they actually happened.

That boulder episode man... I could barely watch it as a kid it frightened me that much.

I tip my hat to you for making this comment

The same goes for Seasons 17-21 as they go through the same basic stuff as seasons 1-7 did, in my opinion.

Same with me
Thomas was one of the things that got me into both Lego and RUclips
I was a 2000s kid who enjoyed all the classic episodes! All the crash scenes and the scary parts
It was my #1 childhood! I love it still to this day. Along with the movie Thomas and the Magic Railroad which, I think, is a criminally underrated gem and classic. It's now on Blu-ray and the Director's Cut that every fan asked for finally came. It just had it's 20th Anniversary!

@@peedreedy2259 Then what about Glyn? And we don't know if it was STH, it could've been the previous controller.

Not just that but due to Dr beeching rapidly dieselising and at least in America people losing interest in railroads.

This is a series for children."
Also, as for "Break Van/Donald and Douglas" in the honorable mentions, the Spiteful Brake Van was in fact, trying to get Douglas sent away and scrapped by slowing down his trains to make him look bad.

To clear everyones minds off:
-the island of sodor is the only safe haven for steam engines
-the engines aren't slaves there working to 1 help the people of sodor and 2 be a really useful engine
-sir topham hat is an authority figure not a evil villain
-no one was hurt as the narrator usually says
“These engines are sometimes punished for their poor behavior by sir topham hat, the true villain”
- shows three examples that had nothing to do with him, hell none of them were even punishments
You said it. Even his "punishments" are just limited to hard work, no excuses.

@@Natendo_Switch I get the impression that this guy has never read the books too
I wouldn't be surprised, but to be fair a lot of people likely don't know the show is based on a book series. I can't really fault them on that.@@fanofeverything30465
@@Natendo_Switch No you can't (The 'you' in that sentence is a generic you not one specifically directed at you)
To me personally, the creepiest episode of the entire series would have to be "Escape".
Which makes the escape theme even more cool and heroic
For escape look into the railway series books and you will find out that sir Topham hatt didn't put Oliver there in the first place he was trying to escape the scrapping of steam locomotives in the UK in the 1960s
@Jaz Zy not if the episode is based on a book if its based on a book then it takes place in the same time frame

Duncan was spooked because he was being an Absolute jerk to Rusty
And Oliver wasn't originally owned by Sir Toppam Hat. Who would never scrap one of his engines

More of a rhetorical question guys 😅 but these are some great answers I wouldn’t of even though of. 🤷🏻♂️
But... (sigh) I probably should be."
Poor Thomas.

That is really dark that they would put that in a little children's show.
I guess the show runners just really like dark subjects in their show and also like having fun with the fog machine. Who can blame them?
Wumpus, actually, most of the stuff involving scrap isn’t true. Oliver was saved from the other railway, or British Railways in real life. Trevor was owned by a farmer, not TFCR.
@@the4tierbridge oh okay. But still, my point still stands. The original show runners must have really liked using the fog machine with the series.
Wumpus, they did. Like how they loved using it in TUGS, the sister show.
