  • Hi Everyone!
    So in this video I talk about the common mistake that I see when people are studying. This has easily happened to me before and sometimes I don't even realize it until the test. Then I think I need to change my study habits and learn from my mistakes. Overall just try not to recite your text book and take some time trying to understand what you are learning about. It may seem like more time but in the long run I promise its not. It does take a little bit more brain power than just copying down a text books, but hey its studying your brain is necessary. I hope this video helps some of you guys out who are studying hours on in and not seeing the results that you think your work reflects. Good luck everyone :)
    Thanks so much for watching!!
    Gabby

    My problem is not that I don't understand the material but it's actually understanding what the question wants during the exam. I may know the ENTIRE material but when it comes to the question, I don't know what things am I supposed to write. Could you please make a video that could help me solve this problem?

      You know need to test yourself by answering the follow up questions given by the book. Or if it's a pdf or ppt, find some questions online.

      Shorouk A Subjects usually fall into one of two categories: theory-based or essay-based. Some subjects fall into both. The revision process is more-or-less the same for both categories, despite subtle differences. For instance, notes will be in the form of essay templates for essay-based subjects.
       Avoid too much note-taking. Detailed note-taking is highly inefficient. Write notes on only the key concepts/ideas. Towards the end of the program, you would want to reduce your notes to a minimum. This is because you’ll be taking a number of exams in one go, so referring to heaps of text is not efficient also a day before the exam do not do past papers review the ones you already did look at the question and write the methods without the answer Cheat sheets usually work best. They’ll contain the things you must remember for the exam. Only you will truly know, after months of revision and testing, what these things are! Memorise these cheat sheets a day before each exam.
       You will be tested on what you know and not how much you can read. Half of your time (or more) should be dedicated to answering revision questions/exam questions as opposed to reading a large textbook. Answering revision questions/exam questions are a true test of memory retention.
       The review phase is the most important part of your revision schedule. This is the only part where you can improve your grades. Always review your work and identify any weaknesses. Convert these weaknesses into strengths over time.
       As you approach the first exam, you should revise for each exam in turn. How you revise will depend on the final exam timetable and the nature of each exam. Dedicate more time to certain subjects.

    I'm having problems with distractions, sometimes we need to work with our computers or phones to do the assignment, and it takes me longer time because I go to Facebook or on other apps. Another thing I've been noticing is when I need to read long texts I get distracted easily as in I have ADHD or something, and at the end of the text I don't remember what I have just read, it happens a lot and I have lost my motivation.

      +Janne Mõttus if you think you might have ADD/ADHD then you should really get tested. I have ADD and since I was diagnosed it's been easier for me because of the medication. That's exactly my problem. I did that cramming without undersanding method and I failed dismally in my test 1&test2 like I got 40% in 3 outta the 6 college courses I'm doing, 2are on the 50's and one on the 80's. I'm just waiting for the final exam in 2weeks time and I'ma study smart & prove this SMART method works. Thanks, I'm your new subbie😁...by the way, do u hv any tips on how I can avoid procrastination? Im tired of last minute studying, more like cramming, pulling allnighters the night before the test.I literally wrote my tests wit a terrible headache 😥 and I don't want that kinda life

    I am very confused why college students ignore any advice you give them. I took Organic Chemistry in college and my son refuses to do all his hw problems or get a tutor (which is free at his college). He spends extra time on one class then doesn't spend enough time on his other classes, and gets an A+ then a D on the other class.

    I would actually recommend summarizing, not just re-writing!
    Go through the text, digest it, literally, and then write it down in brief self-explanatory points that you can actually relate to.
    Also do not create a study guide for all courses/subjects! Just the top hardest ones.
    I would also recommend doing that after you have already attended your class, read and pre-studied the chapter. It just makes one hell of a difference. Creating a study guide should be the final studying method.

    Agreed. I always use this form of analogy when explaining to my friends "how to study". This is especially true for humanities subjects like History. If you tried to understand how Hitler and Stalin thought, and why they made their choices, it'll make understanding the following events a lot easier.

  • @karolinecelis1372

    The correct and number one especially effective way of studying is testing yourself. Because if you utilize by asking and testing yourself during a lecture, which you must pay attention closely that person do not need to have to listen to lectures. However, I assume the lectures and notes to copy is important, so definitely pay attention, but you can test yourself at the same time and have questions for next class or after. In addition, reading the material or examining what's in front is useless, but important to reuse and kept safe, so it's best to use the material to examine and have paper to test yourself by asking questions and finding the answers. I didn't try this, but any occasion you do not try out or attempt because it will become a habit.

      +Sergent Downs You need to understand the concept (:

    • @meatnibbles5564
      @meatnibbles5564 8 лет назад

      +Sergent Downs Yes, when you do your homework, you have your lesson in front of you, whereas when you do a test, you don't. Perhaps before doing your homework, you should revise your lesson, learn it, and UNDERSTAND it well. Then, put your lesson away, keep only a loose sheet of paper on your desk and do your homework on that. This way you're recreating test conditions. Don't do your work from memory or even just copying your lesson, do it from knowledge.

    This is amazing advice that will definitely work with my Anatomy, and Medical Terminology classes!!! My problem is that with Pharmacology I will review the information in the chapters (one in the Human Diseases text and one in the Pharmacology text) and on the quiz the questions are "what would you use to treat these symptoms..." A lot of the time it will involve more then one drug and it's KILLING ME!!! I'm trying to find a way to stuff all of that information in and keep it with the ability of being able to pick and choose information out of different topics. I may have messed up taking two "weeding out" courses at once.

    Hello Gabby, I watched some of your study tips videos when I started this semester and guess what? I got A- and C+. I know the C+ isn't that great *for me it's not:(. But you helped me a lot, like you gave me good tips even though I hear them all the time from teachers and family, but you put them in a way I thought i was better.
    When I studied, I did like you said, to understand and to try to put it in my own words which helped a lot, when I see a sentence that looked like what I wrote I jump in happiness and I know the correct answer.

    Hey Gabby great tips! How did you tackle lectures though? Do you just listen the first time at a lecture to understand what they were saying and then rewatch the lecture to write down and take down all the notes? Especially for medicine, almost every thing the lecturer says is important so its difficult to comprehend while at the same time take down all notes first time through

    omg i'm a senior in highschool and i'm taking chemistry my grades have been very bad, i've studied for hours and still failed tests. i think the right way to study is to study a little bit each day and only study for 30 minutes because when you study for longer than 30 minutes you overwhelm your brain.
    the way i now study is by rereading my notes, highlighting them and then using quizzlet to test myself.
    btw i love your hair and this video is very helpful.

    hi gabby! I'm in high school and I'm taking AP World History. I have my first unit test on 6 chapters soon and the teacher has taught anything, so I'm stuck with trying to learn from the book. History is literally WORD AFTER WORD AFTER WORD, and I just have absolutely no idea how to study. It's not like I can cram every bit of info in...any advice?

    • @NaNoos24
      @NaNoos24 9 лет назад

      +Claire H I hate that. In that case, you should take the time to write your own notes from the book and make note cards also. As you write you should be really paying attention and repeating what you write. When you do that you're analyzing all the information and processing it and summarize in a way that you understand better. Create you're own questions from you're notes to make the notecards. You retain the information better. Have a study group with someone and discuss the material, that can increase memory retention by A LOT. Once you feel confident, you could try teaching it to someone in a study group who doesn't understand the material well, that is the BEST way for memory retention. It sounds silly, but its true. There's scientific research about it. Good luck!

    Thank you for the video ! Hopefully it allows me to memorize by biology and economies essays better. Im having problems when im studying, its like after studying for 1hr, i get distracted easily (by my phone, urge to play games, procrastination etc.) any idea how to allow me to focus ? By the way, if my college gives us lectures notes, would you will recommend me to do study guides based off the lecture notes ? Ps for asking so many questions ! :)

    • @flayuhat
      @flayuhat 9 лет назад

      My personal tip is to take regular study breaks. You WILL get distracted and I think it's been proven somewhere that studying for long periods of time with no breaks will lead to less effective studying than if you take periodic breaks.
      It may take trial/error to figure out what the best studying intervals are for you, but I'd start out with 1 hour study/15 minute break/repeat, or 1 hour 15 min. study/30 minute break/repeat, etc. Tweak it to adjust to your schedule and personality. Do your schoolwork with a timer and once that timer hits an hour or so, finish up what you're doing and take a break. Of course, if you're on a roll, don't feel distracted, and are motivated to study longer, you don't *have* to take a break every hour; I mostly take breaks if I noticeably start to feel antsy.
      My favorite thing to do is to watch a single anime/TV show episode in-between study time, as these are often 25 or so minutes long. Good luck! Never study without taking at least a few breaks, as you will lose attention during studying and you will not be as productive as possible!

    memorizing everything is my life saver in physics because idk but no matter how much I tried I seem to never understand Chemistry and Physics... and I can´t help that... I have to do physics in my last 2 yars of school and I kinda have the feeling that this will ruin my whole graduation grades.... :(

      physics need not be a boring subject...

    Thank you for this video! I messed up my grades this semester. Sure I passed, but I didn't do well. I would take hours re-listening to all of the recorded lectures and write down every single word that the professor said, but I would still receive poor scores on my exams. I did not understand why I was doing so poorly, but then I realized maybe I was spending my time memorizing rather than truly understanding what's happening in the lecture. The night before the exam, I finally decided to open my textbook and realized that maybe if I had invested some time reading/skimming through the book, I would've had a clearer understanding with the content discussed in the lecture. I learned my lesson and will strive to do better in my next bio classes!

      I find that memorising for things like powerpoint presentation is BAD.
      I really suggest to memorise it in MAIN POINTS.
      Then while giving the presentation you can actually developed the presentation in your own words which will be better i guess ;)
