Coconut! Seeing as you enjoyed the second song more, Anesthetize from the same live show in Tilburg would be a massive recommendation. I've only got a surface level knowledge of PT's catalog, but that song is one hell of an epic journey.
I think the main point with PT is melancholy and use of emotion. The songs are not really that technical (Wilson isn't a technical player) but they can be very complex and driven by atmosphere (e.g. Anesthetize).
@@nathanpickering6742 for sure. The rhythm section is a lot more technical though. Gavin Harrison is probably one of the best drummers on the planet lol
@@polarnightaudio oh yes I agree lol. I never get bored of hearing him play. Such tasteful playing and great control. He plays to perfection, even live.
Coconut If you want songs to get you into PT, check out “Futile” and the live version of “Arriving Somewhere But Not Here” As for classic prog check out: Return To Forever : Romantic Warrior Mahavishnu Orchestra : Birds of Fire King Crimson : Starless (live)
I love the recent video of Steve Wilson getting pissed off at his neighbors for doing landscaping at 6am, so he brings his rig outside and starts shredding through the fence.
Yo, I know you just started with these guys, but I'ma telling you, the song Arriving somewhere but not here" is truly a masterpiece (the album is also from 2005 so it might be a bit more friendly to you from a amore modern perspective.)
Okay so I'll first start off my comment by saying coconut. Second, just to touch on your closing comments, the beauty of bands like PT, Steven Wilson (solo), Dream Theater, Riverside and the other names you brought up, is that their catalog is so big and so versatile, that there's music in there for everyone to like if you find the right tracks. Here's my music suggestion. Schadenfreude from six side die. Very unknown and underrated song. I don't even know what genre it falls into. It has prog elements, but I wouldn't call it prog. And the band itself doesn't have any other song in that style. Most of there music is heavy but not much growling. Check it out!
I'm 35 and grew up listening to this. I bought In Absentia in 2002 right after it was released. If you like prog and don't appreciate the beauty of what Steven Wilson does, you don't know your prog :) My brother got to see Porcupine for the The Incident Tour but I only got to see Steven a couple of times in Toronto for his solo tours. When Oasis and Third Eye Blind were mentioned you could see the disappointment in your friends face hahahah
Coconut I’m huge opeth fan and I’ve actually never really checked out porcupine tree. Now hearing them for the first time I can really see how much they’ve influenced opeths sound. With that being said I’d love to see you guys react to some classic opeth, bleak might be good one to start with especially because Steven Wilson does some guest vocals on that track as well.
That's awesome you guys reacted to PT! I miss them being a band Fear Of A Blank Planet, Deadwing & The Incident are my favourite albums from these guys \m/
Yes "Coconut" is my favourite Proteinshake flavour too ;) Through the Ramblesandjokes we stick around Gang represent! Anyway, this is my Video appreciation Comment I made a sperate one for my Recommendation. I always love exchanging Music with people with similar Music taste. Metalbirb has introduced me to some awesome bands and it's only natural that we the Audience want to give back right?Metalbro is that figure for us the Audience to show Metalbirb stuff we want to show him and I'm so glad you reacted to PT, as I wanted to show Metalbirb some as well! So for that reason and for mentioning Riverside and other Bands I love as well: Love you Metalbro (no homo);) We would def have some good Prog conversations. Anyway PLEASE do more of those getting my Friend into xyz Videos. Those are very entertaining to watch because we have both perspectives of someone who points out what makes them "them" and why he appreciates them and t he perspective of someone who never heard of that band. With Most reactions you only get the later. Keep it up and hope Metalbabe is good and back soon on the channel, miss her burps ;) cheers
Laros82 Love you too bro! Haha appreciate the comment and kind words! MetalBirb and I show each other music like this all the time, this is basically just us doing what we always do but in front of a camera haha awesome to know it resonates with some others and we will definitely keep it up! Hope you had a great weekend! 🤘🏻
Coconut Milk is pretty gud 🤐 They're from Canada, the bring the changes and they have some epic solos, one of the best drummers (R.I.P. NP), so can't go wrong with Rush ;) Rush - Villa Strangiato or yyz (both instrumental) Prog recommendations hell yes I'm game. Depends if you are game for any form of Prog or you prefer the weird timesignature constant rythm changing Prog? Be wary, alot of 70's Prog is called prog because they blended alot of styled that was not done before like Genesis did that alot. I find that interesting and can appreciate it even if it's less special nowadays (don't know about Metalbirb?) ....Either way, influencal 70's Bands: as others mentioned King Crimson (I let others recomend I'm still exploring myself), Yes, Rush, Genesis, Camel, Vandergraf Generator... .. . For 80's Prog: Pain of Salvation, Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, Voivod.... 90's: Symhpony X, I left out Ayreon and Jethro Thull because I don't think Metalbirb would enjoy them... I might be wrong...
Coconut! Hey, I'm 3 months late here but had to recommend Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree. Gavin's drumming in this song especially live is amazing and has some really great riffs and grooves. My favorite porcupine tree song for sure. Cheers!
Too me. Blackest eyes is almost a mood piece and the music matches the lyricism perfectly and for that it will be timeless. The calm riffs, the eeire sinister whispering of "your makeup runs" pre heavy riff you feel like the killer (as that's what the content is about) is cold and calculated and its only when those heavy riffs come in he shows some sense of urgency or anger. Everything else is... Unnervingly calm
matty carpenter I was lucky enough to have seen them live and can confirm they are phenomenal live. Had a good chuckle when they vacuumed the stage before they came on so Steven Wilson can perform barefoot. I actually had tickets to see Blackfield as well and then Steven’s father sadly passed and they cancelled the rest of the tour.
It's a dark gloomy album but it takes a while to fathom it. Once you do it's a fantastic listening experience. You need to do the live version of Anesthetize and see one of the best performances ever
Coconut You want Rush suggestions? You'll get Rush suggestions! 2112 - studio version Xanadu - live from Exit Stage Left (1981) Natural Science (studio) Working Man - Time Machine Tour live from Cleveland (2011) La Villa Strangiato - any version YYZ - live from Rio
Anesthetize, live at 013 Tilburg Other bands like this Haken IQ Devin Townsend Opeth ( look at the last few albums, the ones before contain a lot of growling) The Gathering Other genre but excellent: Nightwish Avantasia Ayreon Sabaton
Good stuff. Coconut. I guess the message of the last song is more about social & industrial alienation, escapism, information overload, mental health issues and how humans and society are trying to treat those symptoms with drugs and technology, porn etc.
Coconut. I tried to get into Porcupine Tree as an 8th grader and was definitely ready for them haha. This was awesome! The drum work was sooo tasty in the second track
Genesis Firth of fifth is the best old school prog or the masterpiece that is The lamb lies down on Broadway album. You owe it to yourself to hear this.
Coconut For influential classic prog I'd certainly recommend King Crimson (especially to dark, tecnical metal) But... they're blocking videos. Another highly influential band you didn't mention is Genesis (from early 70's) Try out the song Wather of the Skies for starters.
You need to get him to listen to fucking Anesthetize and Arriving Somewhere but not hear. If he wants the hard proggy shit that's the ones he really need to here, especially the live version
coconut!!!!.....plz for my request......react to atleast one song of tethra.......and also the last time when u posted a 28 min vbid it was me......im kinda happy that u noticed me!!!
You really gotta react to some Methwitch. I’d say these are my top 3, and I’d honestly say you should reacted to all three Bed Full of Snakes Brimstone Heart Teeth Like Nails They’re each off of the album Indewell
They were proggier before this album... more playful and experimental. This record became successfull especially because it was much straighter, poppier, with more rock structures. But I agree with most things. Back then I loved that song for whatever reason, but nowadays I can`t really stick to that band for too long because there's something missing. But anyway, this band is highly overrated, and so is the mastermind, Steve Wilson. His solo stuff was too much of showing off, to much musical masturbatory mayhem.
If u really wanna check out more from PT, I'd recommend "Anesthetize". It's a long song but has it all, all proggy elements that comes to your mind.
Live at Tilburg is epic
The live version from Tilburg.
Try Arriving Somewhere But Not Here by them

I agree! John Wesley's vocals make it a thousand times better.
I think the main point with PT is melancholy and use of emotion. The songs are not really that technical (Wilson isn't a technical player) but they can be very complex and driven by atmosphere (e.g. Anesthetize).
There are a some songs that are a bit technical but it's not overdone and it serves a purpose.
@@nathanpickering6742 for sure. The rhythm section is a lot more technical though. Gavin Harrison is probably one of the best drummers on the planet lol
