Myyy goodness. It's difficult for me to make it through this video. My grandfather used to sing this from the pulpit and it was my FAVORITE to hear him lead. Grandmama was right on the second row, carrying that harmony for the whole church with my aunt at the piano singing and clapping along. All three have gone on to glory. But I can hear the church raising this up like we're all in Sunday morning devotion like they're all here!! My LAWD! This thing is taking me OUT!

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Today, I want to talk to you about axes and the verses in the Bible that mention them. Axes are a tool that has been used for centuries to chop wood, clear land, and build homes. But did you know that the Bible also talks about axes and their significance? In fact, the word "axe" appears more than 20 times in the Bible, and each time it has a powerful message for us. One of the most well-known verses about axes is found in Matthew 3:10, where John the Baptist says, "The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire." This verse speaks of the importance of producing good fruit in our lives. Just as a tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire, so too will we be judged if we do not produce good works in our lives. We must constantly examine ourselves and ensure that we are producing good fruit. Another verse that speaks of axes is found in Psalm 74:5-6, where the psalmist writes, "They broke down all the carved work of the sanctuary with hatchets and axes. They have set fire to your sanctuary; they have defiled the dwelling place of your name." This verse speaks of the destruction of the temple and the devastation that comes when we turn away from God. We must be careful not to defile the dwelling place of God's name and instead work to build up the kingdom of God. In Isaiah 10:15, we read, "Does the ax boast over the one who chops with it? Does the saw magnify itself over the one who wields it?" This verse reminds us that we should not boast in our own abilities or accomplishments, but instead give glory to God for everything we have. We must remember that it is only through God's strength and grace that we are able to accomplish anything. Finally, in Ecclesiastes 10:10, we read, "If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success." This verse speaks of the importance of being prepared and equipped for the work we are called to do. If we are not prepared, we will need more strength to accomplish our goals. But with skill and preparation, we will be successful in our endeavors. In conclusion, these verses about axes remind us of the importance of producing good fruit, not defiling the dwelling place of God's name, giving glory to God, and being prepared for the work we are called to do. I was told that my grandfather “Rev. Willie James “Battle Axe” Davis wrote that song when he was young. He sold it but never got the rights to the song. He didn’t know any better. He paid his way through college with the money. He joined the AME conference at 13 years old. He was a preaching phenomenon!
