  • A place shrouded in legends, a place of extraordinary natural beauty, a place that at different times and many centuries ago was a place of power and strength. All this is about the Cossack capital of Trakhtemiriv, which is spread out on a small peninsula whose shores are washed by the gray Dnieper, in the north of Cherkasy region near Kanev.
A Cossack residence, a decision-making center - this is how the French researcher Guillaume Levasseur de Beauplan saw Trakhtemiriv in the middle of the 17th century. In the "Description of Ukraine" he mentioned the Trakhtemyriv Monastery, which at that time already bore the name of Assumption:
"...below lies the Trakhtemirovsky monastery of Russian monks, it rises in the middle of a chasm, surrounded by inaccessible rocks. Here the Cossacks take all the most valuable things they have. There is also a river crossing."
A Cossack hospital was built here, near the monastery, where wounded and elderly Cossacks were treated.
