It's absolutely insane to me how high poly the Link model in Twilight Princess looks, despite it only consisting of just about 4K tris - it's crazy how much life textures can bring to relatively small models
that's exactly what happened to the model of mario in supersmash bros melee, he is very basic in term of tris (just 4k) but it it one of the more realistic models just for that photrealistic textures
and the fact the game looked decent even before the Wii U remaster,,,

I'd love to see link's model in breath of the wild with all the different clothes. I wonder which has the most tris, I'd think the armor perhaps since it looks to have more detail, but ya never know
As far as I can think that Ancient gear has the most detail
The way his model works is that he has a base model that looks like a buzz cut and the rest is the no clothes model. The hair is a different model, likely to not interfere with the hats, and clothes are completely separate. I believe the model shown in this video is the model used in the memory cutscenes.

14XenonGaming14 in 3D modeling, there really isn’t such thing as higher polygons. Everything is triangles. A quad is just 2 triangles. An any other n-gon is just an arrangement of triangles.

I like how the version of Young Link that has *less* polygons looks much better because it actually portrays his appearance like in his artwork.
Ocarina of Time Young Link tried his best to match his artwork at the time but his model lacks his shoulder belt, has wide clothes, poofy hair, lack of sideburns and hair color being almost orange.
Meanwhile, Majora's Mask Young Link looks just like his *actual* artwork of the game. He has his belt over his shoulder, his clothes are less wide, his tunic collar has been reworked, and his hair looks more on par to his concept art, being less poofy, more evenly split and having a lighter shade of yellow/orange.
True fact: the extra tris in skyward sword link are actually all in his lips

Unshaded BOTW Link looks spooky. But they really nailed his expressions, he feels less like an angry man made for killing ganon, and more like a human that actually feels.

To be fair, with the game's camera angle the hair is what you'll be seeing the vast majority of the time.
I’m actually surprised you didn’t bring more attention to the dual requirements of the GameCube vs Wii, and the Wii-U vs Switch when it came to TP and BOTW. One of the things that makes both those games legendary is how far they were able to push the previous gen consoles to such extremes.
Bruh the skyloft music threw me all the way back to when I was younger man. Good times. I love skywards sword it’s one of the only Zelda games where it feels like Zelda and link have an actual relationship. And groose is always a good time on screen

The best models I have ever seen with Link is Twilight Princess, same with The Wind Waker, but still Twilight Princess is probably the most beautiful Link model made.

Edit: okay so this comment is going bananas: TPHD and WWHD have the same models. I and probably AStart+ (sorry if he didn’t) forgot about Triforce Heroes. Hyrule Warriors is not a mainline game, but eh, it’s one of the most well-known ones on RUclips because it’s the easiest to rig for SFMs

TP HD and WW HD are the same models. HW link is quite unique tbh mostly because of his scarf.
He also didn't show Deku Link, Goron Link, Wolf Link, etc. I'd like to see those even if they aren't normal hylian Link and might not fit into the video.
Your attitude towards the skyward sword model kinda threw my for a loop ngl. I myself have not played skyward sword, so i cant speak for the artstyle in full, but the second the model jumped on my screen i was full with dopamine in the frantic thought of "THAT! _THAT IS THE STYLE I WANT!"_
definitely more vibrant and cartoony is what i go for but the aesthetic of simple shading on a very well made model is _exactly_ what i strive for.
I agree with you. That style really fits the zelda series. Twilight Princess looks amazing, but it's just not... As Zelda. Practically all the other models have a more cartoony look or at least cell shading. It's just the style implemented in the games I feel.

I think you forget that most of the Link models from SS, TP, BOTW and a few other games have the tongue, teeth and inside of the mouth behind the mouth on the outside, they add in armature to move the lips and jaw, etc

Oh, but if you think about it, Hyrule warriors is technically Canon, but Nintendo just won't say it. (Watch the game theory episode about it)

botw link is a bit hard on poly count I think.... This is his basic champions tunic/hylian trousers look. But with all the clothing choices and differences (mostly hair) there are, I think multiple poly counts for multiple tunics.

I know, the twilight princess art style is just kinda ugly now-a-days, it didn't age well. Realistic art tends to look worse with time. When it comes to video games at least.

I think the word you’re looking for is sideburns
Nah they’re bangs. They attach above his ears, they aren’t growing out of the side of his face
The most acccurate term would be sidelocks, since they aren't facial hair like sideburns but rather grow from the head just in front of the ears. Bangs grow from the head above the forehead and usually only go down to the eyebrows. Orthodox Jews wear sidelocks called Payot.

What I noticed in OoT3D (and probably the N64 OoT) is that the edge of Adult Link's bangs covers his earrings. The only way I can see them is to make Adult Link move close to the camera and make him face sideways.

yes, they are all different torso, feet, etc models that the game swaps, pretty much. This guy looked at Link's hero outfit alone, so it doesn't show how much detail something like the fire armor would have

Those extra tris are likely to make sure Link looks correctly when doing any animation.
I'm a bit shocked you never seemed to have thought of it.
Textures were also messed up on the tunics for Ocarina of Time. Also, he doesnt seem to understand that "a simple 2D texture" with alpha is much more performance heavy than a couple verts.
Also the skyward sword link model has much rounder and smoother shapes ccompared to TP's link model, despite it having less details. The more rounder and smoother the shapes are to make the models, the more polygons it will take. I'm surprised the creator of this video/series hasn't notice this as yet.
Spirit Tracks Link is my fave Link model, followed closely by Skyward Sword's Link.
He just looks, small and... cute, even in low poly form. He's also so damn expresive, just like WW...

i think the only reason why it wasn't covered was because Hyrule Warriors is a spin-off game and he wanted to focus on the main series zelda games

For the Majora's Mask model those bangs you mentioned are actually his side burns. You can see in some of the official artwork for the game that they gave him much longer hair than he had in OoT. Probably to tell the players that he has aged slightly.
