In H.G.Wells' novel there is very little description of the time machine itself other than it is an intricate mechanical device with levers and dials. The time machine in this film is an incredible piece of artistic work considering how little in the book the set designers had to start with.
Fun fact: The color of the time circuit board in Back to the Future was a slight homage to the alarm lights on top of the George Pal time machine. Yellow, Red, and Green.

Indeed, the BEST time travel movie of all time. It had warmth, charm, an excellent cast and storyline. Watch "The Time Machine: The Journey Back." It's the 1993 "sequel" with Rod Taylor, Alan Young and Whit Bissell reprising their original roles. Will bring tears to your eyes.

If I had been George and found out what I did in 1917, I would have gone back to 1915, reacquainted myself with Filby then tell him what I discovered and ask him if I could bring him forward in time to 1920 so he could resume his life with his family and perhaps live another thirty years or so.
It is such a pity that big chunks of this wonderful film have been cut out. It didn't show when George was asked where had it gone, to which he replied: "It's gone nowhere. It's still here, but in a different time."
“Oh. Please! It's not a time machine, if anything; it looks like something that Elton John would drive through the Everglades” -Penny from season 1, episode 14, TBBT.

Yes, I thought that part, where the mannequin has her clothes changed repeatedly, is one of the more humorous, but essentially, accurate details of the passing of time... Great film, also liked the speaking rings far in the future...

Why is this version jumping ahead to future scenes before the current one plays out? I have this classic movie on DVD, should've watched the dvd instead of dealing with the screen jumping.
And who paid the property taxes and utility bills all those 17 years haha? Or was all energy from firewood those days, well water and that which he paid per use only upon need, and no property taxes in those days?
Gas was used for lighting in homes and streetlights but people burned coal for heating. Electricity had just started to be introduced to London. The first electric streetlights had been introduced in 1879 so George here would've known about electricity as a public service for awhile, perhaps he helped install the lamps. The first single phase AC system was developed in 1891.
There were already quite a few cars in London in 1900. Mostly horse drawn vehicles still back then, but the occasional automobile and even the odd motorcycle should not have surprised him. As a scientist, he would have heard of the first experimental Zeppelin, set to take flight in the summer of 1900, so again, he shouldn’t be surprised to see them over London being used as weapons of war in 1917. BTW, at that stage of the war, most raids against London were being conducted by airplanes, at night. That would perhaps be more shocking to a time traveller from 1900.

The movie is missing critical parts. It has been ruined.
The dress shop window used to show the passage of time was a brilliant idea. :-)
