Hi there Doc. The idea of doing a piece-by-piece serial for “rebuilding vs parting out” sounds like a plan. It’ll give others (myself included) an inkling about feasibility and practicality when taking on such a project. This might give us a dollars and cents figure if someone wants to take on a tasking like this. Not including our own personal time and labour and the availability of parts. This is my opinion only….see what others think. Thanks for the video…Mac

I voted yes yesterday but I'll vote yes again now.
I take on projects as a hobby, not as a business so, I have my own ways of deciding if something is a restoration candidate or better used as a parts donor but, it's always good to see the methods used by others. Sometimes the choice is fairly obvious but, other times it takes some close examination.

The biggest reason I wanted to know if you guys wanted to see a video on how we decide. is I think a lot of people don't understand that there's a lot more goes into deciding if something's worth fixing or not when you do it as a business. On the last video I had several peoples day that they rebuild kits for that 1030 I was only 15 hundred bucks.

      @@tractordoctortv I understand completely Doc.
Even though I take on my projects as restorations that I normally have no intention of selling, I also own a small business so I get the cost vs profit issue too. Even when I do decide to sell one of my restorations, I know that, chances are, I'll never get back what I have invested in it. For me, that's not really an issue. For you and Dave, it's the difference between making a living and filing for bankruptcy.
Using the 1030 as an example, I'm sure that if one of you planned to keep it for a personal collection, you would've gladly bought the rebuild kit. However, since it was destined for the lot, the extra $1500, along with labor and other costs involved didn't make sense. On the other hand, usable parts salvaged from it to get other machines running will eventually save enough money that it makes sense to put it in the parts lot.
I love and watch every video that both of you put out, keep up the great work!

I think a lot of people would be interested in the process of making the decision whether to rebuild or part out a tractor. You seem to get a lot of people who are in the "everything can be rebuilt" mindset, but obviously if the cost of parts, the base tractor and labor out weigh the potential value of the tractor that is the financial basis. Then you get into the rarity or the sentimental value of the tractor. I know you have your grandpa's old IH sitting, waiting for the time when you can rebuild it. The value of the tractor may not be as high as the cost, but you are saving a part of your families history, something there is no way of placing a dollar amount on.
