I remember watching this back when it came out and I've been dreaming about travelling to San Francisco since I was a kid ... This summer I got to finally do it and spend 5 weeks in San Francisco on a scholarship for my future career. Fair to say, everything I had on my "bucket list" I did, and cried like a new-born baby!
I was born in San Francisco and went to school there. Man this video brings back some memories. Bet I walked a lot of that video in my youth. Would love to go back and see how its changed. Been 40 years since I've seen it. Thanks for the memories.
You sir, nailed it. Well done. How often can one experience the life and beauty of the city without the distractions that humanity provides. Haven't been there since 16 October 1989.
@ Everyone involved in this project:
This is an amazing piece on an amazing city. You captured a side of San Francisco that most people who live all their lives there would never have known. Many thanks to all of you.
As a native San Franciscan, I feel an odd amount of joy watching this. I expected it to be eerie without people, but it's actually just as beautiful. Thank you for making/posting this.
this video made me cry. I love SF, and I cant explain why.
San Francisco is my fav holiday destination.....I've been 8 times and hope to have many more. thanks for posting.
I'm from Los Angeles and holy bejesus..this is beautiful. The everything about this video is beautiful. San Francisco, such an art sphere.
This Re-Affirmed my pride to live where I do. Great representation of San Francisco and an all around great production!
I am truly lucky to live in a city as amazing and beautiful as San Francisco. Awesome video. Thank you!
Spotted what looks like a moving vehicle at 0:25 but other that that. Flawless. Love it.
I spent August in SF - this video actually made me feel homesick! (I've featured it in the Community Blog on the Instructables website)
How did you make this? There is no way all these places had absolutely no people or movement for so long! There has got to be some sort of magic behind this...great work!
+Daniel Williams Combination of time-lapse and long exposure with neutral density filter. Easy technique, but you have to be creative to come up with something like this video.
Wow - very cool! Makes sense. Keep up the good work!
San Francisco is probably my favorite place. When I went there it was so relaxing being out by the bridge.
Finally!!! A video worth watching in the Travel & Events section!
I live in San Francisco and everything is really beautiful as in the people and the diversity. The only thing that drives me insane are the alarming amount of homeless people. Still, I recommend everyone to visit SF because you will have a great time.
Proud to be from the Bay! Kinda eerie to see a city that you have seen so many times this empty...
I love San Francisco. So many great memories!
That was a cool video. The city looks very peaceful without the transportation chaos. Beautiful city.
simply a beautiful piece of art
Get into the city early on the weekend on a bike. As this beautiful city slowly wakes from it's slumber, It can get pretty close to what you see here.
Both eerie and refreshing. Enjoy.
Beautiful video! You caught part of my house in your nob hill shot :) such a lovely perspective of the city I grew up in.
I live in san francisco and its odd with the sights i see on a daily basis empty. Good joba its amazing and has really made me think.
1:17 Car at the top of the hill on the left side of the street.
1:18 Cars reflecting off the building windows.
1:35 Cars on the far left.
2:10 Guy on the balcony
Amazing video none the less!
Qué bonita la ciudad de San Francisco: limpia, organizada, verde. Un lugar interesante para visitar, conocer y vivir
This is simply beautiful! Commendable effort!! Thanks a lot for sharing.
Theres a few, especially around coffeeshops, near the beachfront and downtown. but it is a far cry from what you usually see on the weekday.
Gorgeous and eerie ... can't wait for Seattle! A+
Such a beautiful city.
this is an awesome video of San Francisco. makes me want to go there for the weekend
Great timelapse. Excellent theme and very professional usage of excellent material. A few clunky edits and even less questionable timing, but hey, it's free and a great template for my own time-lapse projects.
Oh I wasn't assuming how it was done in this video. Just simply explaining that lights change based on timers as well as weight sensors. Thanks for the link.
hauntingly beautiful
As someone who lives in the Bay Area, this is awesome.
Without people, the city looks so calm, beautiful, and serene. Although it has a scary feeling too, of being alone in such a big place.
You guys should do a couple major cities. This is so cool!!
Love it and thanks for the explanation. ATT Park and the bridge - gorgeous.
Home :( I miss you my beautiful city, I never thought you can fall in love with a place until I lived there.
I SAW the cars on the Golden Gate Bridge at around 2:20. Through the fog. You can't erase that!
this video just made me realize how awful life would be without people... i need to learn to appreciate those around me... i love you all!!
I love the city! So proud to be from the bay! ❤
This is simply beautiful! Great job!
This was AMAZING! I LOVE SAN FRANCISCO!
Its very nice innovative video. A very important point to mention here is that the shadows on the bridges or the places you removed the people ar still and not moving.
this video is gorgeous, thank you for making it!
Wow, this is awesome. Your work is inspiring!
can't wait to go
seems like a lot of efforts were put into making this video! good job!
As a proud SF Native, having been born and raised in this beautiful City by the Bay - I do think this is lovely, but the best thing about my Hometown is the PEOPLE, and yes, even the traffic, tourists, and transplants all lend some of their own beauty to make SF one of the greatest cities in the WORLD. GO NINERS & GIANTS!!
This is amazing art work! Beautiful!!!
The city I was born and raised in. I will always love SF. Now I live in San Jose, and despite what many people may think, it is an equally amazing city (almost). The fact that they were able to clear the streets of the 2nd most densly populated city in North America, is an engineering feat in and of itself. Bay Area = the best large metropolitan area in the world with no equal (unparalleled). Oakland believe it or not, is nearly a world class city in it's own right (despite the crime).
@14 secs, it shows Haight/Ashbury at the corner of the Drogstore Cafe.
They had great burgers.
At the right, the red car is parked in front of the building where I lived on the 3rd floor in later '67.
What a time I had living there in '68 & '68.
I live a different life now butt, there are some memories of that time which are "groovy".lol
ahhh David Adametz...he wasnt in the credits at the end so now I know. Keep doing these its great.
nice job! you sir have patience like a saint its almost like a zombie movie a what if every allready was gone.
San Francisco is the memories of my youth.
Lived by the Bay most of my life, still think its one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Beautiful.
i want to go to San Fran! I miss it so much.
Simply amazing.
WOW! Makes me a little home sick. A lot of good memory there.
I love that city.
This was most probably taken in the early hours of the morning. There are always people in SF - the only time you get an empty street is spring time at about 5 AM because it looks like this and street cleaning!
That was beautiful thanks for posting
It was an incredible city in the early 70's.
This is great. Very nicely done.
Not all lights are triggered weight sensors. Some are on timers. The timing is calculated based on the type of intersection and engineering investigations into number and type of cars passing through the intersection
SF..one of my favorite cities
Absolutely brilliant!
Notice how when the clouds move, there is no shade or shadow on the ground. It's a unique editing effect that allows for a still of a shot while the editor moves one distinct object (flags, traffic lights, clouds, etc). Vsauce covered this in one of their IMG videos, I think.
Gosh, I miss this place so badly. :)
So happy life is removed by CGI, to be honest it hurts watching! For that - I love it!
I love your work, thanks for making this :]
I love San Francisco!
We all have problems. Life is not easy for any of us. I have a life threatening illness, and I'm only 42. I'm seriously considering ending my career in the computer industry and going on disability. I can't handle the stress. You should consider yourself lucky to be going to college in the states. Work hard. Stay focused, and don't let your situation get you depressed. Stay positive and things will work out for you. Peace out.
These are awesome, I like the music choices you played with the time lapse...who are the musicians or the band?
I live in San Jose which is 40 min away from SF, and whenever we visit it, i always choose a passenger seat. Whoever been there knows what im talking about.:)
just wonderful ... brilliant
Beautiful!
0:25 Car on right side near top of hill
1:00 Car between office buildings on left side (zoomed in on bay bride)
1:02 Vehicle on bay bridge (left of TransAmerica building)
1:02 Boat in water near TransAmerica building
Why is it so hot? My favorite aspect of sf was the cool weather! Other then that cool Video. It's so weird not seeing people EVERYWHERE!
How did you manage to clear all the streets and tourist attractions in San Fran? That's crazy!
Hi everyone, San Francisco is my favourite city and my dream is to travel there one day. I hope it will come true. Be happy if you live there, because some people don't have a fortune to be there...
Amazing work!
Ahh i love my city. Go Giants!!
I love the city. Sometimes I take it for granted. How did get get rid of all the fog and people, though? But anyways, I love SF and the Bay is my home! Represent!
i love my city!!
favolosa città la più bella d'America
The weirdest part is the shot of the Bay Bridge at 0.56 That's just never empty, except during closures. I've seen the rest of The City look like this at times, just early in the morning instead of middle of the day. When you're an early jogger then seeing this is more normal. Looks gorgeous though. Crowds mess up the beauty of a lot of places.
Cool idea! Great execution!
This is a wonderful film. Is there a place I can but the music ? The piano Is beautiful.
Very cool, I would like to see one of Austin or Houston.
@elizabeth moore this is why its called "empty america" . Their showing what it would look if it was empty.
This is a great video! Especially the Seattle one, but how do you guys make these? I'm just wondering because they're highly populated cities and are one of the worst traffic cities. It's just weird to see them with no cars and people. Also, I know it's called Empty America and there aren't supposed to be anyone. I'm just curious.
1:50 scene from Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Awesome video. :)
very well executed.
1:00 - can see people on the other side of the river, are everywhere
Simply awesome. Thx!
God bless America
Amazing!
Now if you can also get rid of all the parked cars as well.
