Great video. I was at Ramstein from 1986-1988. Your dorm looks pretty luxurious compared to ours, just as what I lived in would have seemed luxurious compared to previous generations. We had two men in a small room with a communal latrine down the hall. I don't remember any refrigerator in the dorm although there may have been one in the day room. It's been a while. Still, my situation was much better than the junior enlisted in the Army at that time and I appreciated it. That period was a cool one in my life and I look back on it with fondness. Thanks again for the video.
Boy, is that dorm different than mine in '68. I lived across from the library and service club, also the base theater back then. Every room was two to a room, and there was a communal shower on every floor. No kitchens, no private baths, but perfectly adequate. Hey, it was a BARRACKS, not a condo! To get private stuff, you could always rent an apartment in Landstuhl, which I did. Can't believe how things have changed.
I’m glad they’re taking care of airmen now. This is nothing like my Security Police dorm in 1986 😃. It was rough and I had two roommates. It was right across from the theater and had an armory in the bottom.
I grew up in Ramstein AFB, Germany since the 1980's and then lived in the Panhandle of West Florida since the 1990's where I graduated from Niceville High School ? Lived near Eglin AFB where my Dad was stationed in the air force.
My dad was station at Aviano AFB in Italy and when I went to high school there going to ramstein was by far the most fun of all of the trips. Seeing the BX really brings back memories!
Old fart here ----- spent 67-69 enlisted . Left spring 69 as an E-5. Traveled to 15 countries which left me dead broke & enjoying the time of my life. Wow hard to believe the changes.
wow, how things has changed, looks like the Hilton !!!! I was there "76-78", 3 to a room, no latrine (bathroon). just locker for your clothes, couple desk to write letters home, yes letters, no cell phones etc., dam do they have maids also? Lol happy for them, still miss the place !!!!
Air Force airmen still have it way better than the other branches, as they should due to the fact that the Air Force is the hardest to get into for enlisted as well as officer's candidates
I was stationed at Ramstein in 1976, they kicked us out of the barracks on Ramstein, and sent us all to Kapaun Air Station about 8 miles away, on some hill top, with nothing around... 2 man rooms, one large latrine on each of 3 floors. The only way to and from Ramstein was a Air Force shuttle bus, that usually ran 3-4 times a day.. ONLY... Kapaun AS, had a small cafeteria and thats it. Do they still have 'ration' coupons, for gasoline, cigarettes and alcohol ? Ramstein looks like Disneyland today.
Was stationed at Ramstein back from 1990-93. Very different now. Was close to the flight line. Would wake up to the f-16's taking off in the AM. Airmen was correct about no AC in the summer.......
I was at Ramstein from 78-to 80 in EMS, was MMS when I got there, that's when MMS (Munitions Maintenance) changed to EMS, (Equipment Maintenance). At first we were across from street from the NCO Club. We had to move all our shit to another barracks down the street across from the SP barracks. The post office was in between and the chow hall was right behind our new digs. Yah, the pain was we had to carry all our stereo gear from the fourth floor on one barracks to the other fourth floor. Three to a room with a gang shower and wall of shitters, maybe ten long. The place was a real stinker because the back the the toilets were shaped reverse of U.S. toilets and the water was in the front of the bowl instead of the back of the bowl so the shit stuck to the porcelain. What a smell. That beer shit smell is unforgettable. Had latrine duty just twice. Put my rain gear on and used the garden hose. But still good memories because we had fun. Still friends with some of the guys from that time. I have pictures. We had a fridge in every room. Usually for our bier and wine. LOL The hash was primo. AMMO🎱🎸🎶🔊 We Rocked Hard. We were moving bombs and missiles and other BOOM BOOMS. Just two article 15's, not bad for that tour of duty. You will have to ask the Security Police about our Bouncing rubber balls. Sure got the dogs attention.
Way different from my stay, 89-91. My dorm was out the back of Fred's and to the left and it was just remodeled right before I got there and still nothing close to yours. It was the Supply dorm.
Jim, I was there from 89-92 and I remember that supply dorm. Communal showers and large rooms. I was in the flight maintenance dorms. I was 512th FS. Worked on F-16s. I probably ran into you there at some point. I was across the street from Fred’s. We shared a bathroom between 2 rooms in our dorm.
WAYYY Better than in 1976. 2 man rooms. no sink, or mirror in the rooms, down the hall to the toilet and showers. At one point they moved us out to Kapaun Air Station, which was slightly worse. Kapaun is a hilltop with 20 barrack buildings and thats it.
DarkNinja x first piece of advice is don’t do security forces. It’s one of those jobs that won’t transfer to the civilian world whatsoever. The asvab is extremely easy just do some practice ones and study ur basic highschool math science and English.
Its true, if you want some action look into special mission aviation. SecFo has a high washout rate compared to other afscs. You'll do great on the asvab bud @@TheJayzzee
You say "like" all the time which is pretty distracting from an otherwise great video. It would be nice to see the areas that would be of interest to new personnel, for example, dining hall, finance office, personnel office, housing office, vehicle registration, all places I think would be high on the visit list for new folks.
Brittany Woodfin It isn't a rank requirement. If your accompanied or if your E5+ you will not be in a dormitory. If vacancy is a problem, the commander can authorize off base housing though.
A lot different than in 72 when the ASAFE HQ moved from Wiesbaden to Damage in. The dorm was a condemned building probably from around WW2. Some rooms had no walls, no draws, an iron bed, no closets, no ceiling fans, a common shower, sink area for everyone in the floor. Three story building. No common area. Everything painted dark green. Most depressing living quarters I ever saw. Eventually moved into another building that had same layout.
Watched a couple of your videos. Man what a difference between 1978 and 2019. Ramstein AFB was nothing but a Blue suit Army base, in a word it sucked. 4 to a room wall lockers and shared showers and crappers.

Yes it's certainly not bad over here. A new dorm has just been complete and I might be doing a walk around of it as well.
ricardo340 it still is right across from the movie theater right by the flight line. It’s single person rooms now I was stationed there from 02-05
I was next to you in 2103... Then... They moved us to the Northside
I was there 85-88. Man what a difference in the barracks and the BX.

LUCKY 472 Times have changed. If the Air Force wants the smart IT dudes, they'll have to accodate us or we leave haha 🤷🏼♂️

I must have passed you in the NCO Club 6-1978 to 6-1980

HAHA ya buddy I thought I was having a nightmare when I got there in 78. Spent 2 years wondering if I had somehow ended up in the Army.
Good to see American consumerism is doing strong overseas
Two questions bud. Why did they put you in a dorm before you got your house? Did you get a house off base or on?
I got married AFTER I got to Ramstein so that's why. They still probably shouldn't of but oh well. I was only in there for a few months.
Can you bring non-military/civilians on bases overseas? Just wondering cause if i get Ramstein i have a friend in germany i’d like to visit
Back in 1978 my girl friend from Kindsbach used to visit me in my barracks.
Do comm airmen usually have the newer and nicer dorms? I’m trying to get in for 3D0X2 now.
No it just happens to be this specific dorm is mostly for Airmen in Base Comm.

Do you have to purchase your own WiFi or is it provided? And if it is provided, is it any good?
You have to purchase it!
WIFI, cost me 50 bucks to make a phone call to the states in 79. Then I had to scream over the phone.
WTF!!! we were 3 to a room and gang latrines. But that was 79-82
