4. and encamping against him, they destroyed the produce of the land until they reached Gaza, and left no food in Israel, nor sheep, nor oxen, nor asses.
5. Because they went up with their flocks and tents; they came in multitude like locusts; both they and their camels were innumerable; and they entered the earth to destroy it.
6. Thus Israel was greatly weakened because of the Midianites; then the children of Israel cried out to the Lord.
7. And it came to pass, as they cried unto the Lord on account of the Midianites,
8. The LORD sent a prophet unto them, and said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel: I brought you up out of Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage;
9. I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and I drove them out from before you, and I gave you their land.
10. Also I said unto you, I am the Lord your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But don't listen to my voice.
11. Then the angel of the Lord came, and sat under the oak that was in Ophra, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, whose son Gideon was threshing the wheat in the press to hide it from the Midianites.
12. Then the angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man.
13. Gideon answered him: Oh, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why has everything befallen us? and where are all his wonders, which our fathers told us, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt? Now, however, the Lord has forsaken us, and has delivered us into the hand of Midian.
14. The LORD turned to him, and said to him, Go in this thy strength, and deliver Israel out of the hand of Midian; am I not sending you?
15. Gideon replied unto him, Alas, my lord, with what shall I deliver Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I the smallest in my father's house.
16. The Lord hath made him: As I will be with thee, thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.
17. Gideon continued: If I have now found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is you who speak to me.
18. I beg you not to depart from here until I return bearing my gift and place it before you. He replied: I will wait until you return.
19. So Gideon went in, and prepared a young goat, and made unleavened cakes with an ephah of flour; he put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot and, bringing it under the oak, presented it to him.
20. But the angel of God said to him, Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and set them on this rock, and pour the broth over them. And he did so.
21. And the angel of the Lord stretched out the end of the staff that he had in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; then he fired up from the rock, and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the Lord disappeared from his sight.
22. When Gideon saw that he was the angel of the Lord, he said: Woe is me, Lord God! for I saw the angel of the Lord face to face.
23. But the Lord said unto him, Peace be with thee, fear not; you shall not die.
24. So Gideon built there an altar to the LORD, and called it Jehovah-salon; and even to this day the altar is in Ophra of the Abiezrites.
25. That same night the Lord said to Gideon, Take one of thy father's oxen, even the second seven-year-old ox, and break down the altar of Baal, which is thy father's, and cut down the asherah that is at the foot of it.
26. Build an altar to the Lord thy God on the top of this strong place, in due form; take the second ox, and offer him for a burnt offering, with the wood of the asherah which thou shalt cut
27. Then Gideon took ten men from among his servants, and did as the Lord had commanded him; but, fearing his father's house and the men of that city, he did not do it by day, but by night.
28. When the men of that city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, the ashera that had been at his foot cut down, and the second ox offered on the altar that was built.
29. So they said to one another, Who did this? And after investigating and inquiring, they said, Gideon the son of Joash did this.
30. Then the men of that city said to Joash, Take out thy son that he may die, for he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and cut down the asherah that was at his foot.
31. But Joash said to all that set themselves against him, Will ye contend for Baal? will you deliver him? Whoever contends for it, this morning will be slain; if he is god, of himself strife, for his altar has been broken down.
32. Wherefore they called Gidon Jerubbaal that day, saying, Baal contendeth against him, for he hath broken down his altar.
33. Then all the Midianites, the Amalekites, and the children of the east gathered together, and, passing over Jordan, camped in the valley of Jezreel.
34. But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon; and he blew the trumpet, the Abiezrites gathered after him.
35. And he sent messengers throughout all the tribe of Manasseh, which also gathered together after him; and he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, who went out to meet him.
36. Gideon said to God, If thou shalt deliver Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,
37. behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if the dew is only on the fleece, and the whole earth is dry, then I will know that thou shalt deliver Israel by my hand, as thou hast said.
38. And so it was; for, rising at dawn the next day, he pressed the fleece, and wrung out the dew from it, which filled a cup.
39. Gideon said more to God: Let not your anger be kindled against me if I speak only this once. Allow me just one more time to test the fleece; I pray thee that only the fleece may be dry, and that there may be dew in all the land.
40. And God did so that night; for only the fleece was dry, and there was dew on all the ground.
