This is the reason i dumped all eight of my IKEA detolf units. I had upgraded the glass to thicker glass, and used to display 1/4 statues. The unit's never broke, but i knew i was taking a risk!
First collapse I’ve seen was someone’s glass shelf (not a detolf) on FB. I have a 4’ L garage shelf in my bedroom. Most of my statues aren’t that heavy except my Prime 1 Penguin 1/3 on mid shelf. I might get some of these 2-3 ft L garage shelves in your vid.
That is a collectors worst nightmare to see those shelves collapsing..
Why? Free weathering.
Let this be a lesson about hoarding and giving statues some space to be appreciated... Look at all those big pieces condensed in that small area
People buy way too much stuff and get overcrowded collection.

What do you consider "heavy" and "extremely heavy" just for reference to prevent this doesn't happen to my collection...

Looks like they didn't put the front supporting bars on for display aesthetics and it collapsed.
Oh Man, I thought it was some of your collection. Yeah, I have heard a few Detolf collapsing or exploding stories. Definitely, a collector's worst nightmare. Hopefully, he has some of it insured.

When it comes to metal units, they will say what the weight limits are, and the weight has to be spread out, not all in one place (as you mentioned in the video 5:40 ). Another precaution, do not left animals run loose around them 6:24 ;D
I mean its still metal. 100$ says with that step stool being there, I wonder if the owner was puttin somethin up and took one foot off the step stool and put some of their weight on the self rite where you see the bend. Just a hypothesis but why would that stool be there otherwise? These shelves can hold a lot like flankster said and his shelves are packed in some areas.
I would cry for like 3 months and then buy some more lol
My gawd! At-least when the Detolfs explode the statues are usually still in tact, though with shards of glass to carefully remove and hopefully not scratch paint.
Some claim Detolfs explode from overtightened screws on top or stacking too much weight on top (probably a combination of both). I'm curious if certain altitudes and air pressure also play a role.
I use the same garage shelves you have and they've all held up for years so far 🤞💪 I like the double wood idea, do you just use the leftover wood planks from the kits?

I try to avoid shelves completely. But if you have to go with wood shelves. Believe it or not they can handle a lot more wight than metal ones.
