Cdr Clark (Pogo) was one of the coolest most respectful pilot I ever met in my 12 years of working with Tomcats. He treated everyone great.

    The best of the best
    Naval Aviators.
The dirty roll on takeoff is AWESOME!! I saw it done at an Airshow at NAS Miramar in 87'.
Never seen any Air Force demo pilot do the dirty roll on takeoff.

I was a bit disappointed because in other years they also did a high speed pass at 600-650 knots. The visible shock cones it made in the high humidity air was so impressive.
How I miss these shows. The last was in 1992. I still live nearby even today (my first airshow there was in 1967).

They still had the P&W TF30 engines at this point I believe. I personally find tomcat demos after 88-89, when they were refitted with the new General Electric engines to be a true representation of what the airframe could do.

And the supersonic pass they end their demo with is just awesome, so much so they should have really let the hornets go first. While the bug makes a little pop or mild bang "if they can at all" sometimes the bug drivers would have to make a few attempts always with a shallow dive to assist and a few mile run in. The Tomcat on the other hand would do his slow approach and I mean slooow sub 120kts. That wing was supposed to facilitate operating off Midway class carriers or the never built medium carriers, the wing plus the F401 engine not the horrible TF30's our squadron was saddled with. So Tomcat crawls past the bow puts it into zone 5 raises gear etc... turns away from the ship flies a fairly small over not getting to far from the ship he always remained in sight and easily seen unlike the hornets you'd lose sight of as they travel a few miles away. You see him zooming back towards you and you begin to notice the Cat is pushing the water underneath it down and around suddenly he's right up on you then gone and silence which is weird the first time you experience it since you're not used to a jet streaking by without a deafening roar. Then the hand of god comes down and smacks you in the chest rattles your balls and pushes you back a little as it simultaneously shakes the 89 THOUSAND and change ton carrier around sucking the air out and scattering papers around. After experiencing that for the first time the first hornet experience a few minutes later was sad and funny.
pop vs BOOM MOTHER FUCKER!! HEAR ME ROAR!!!

Awesome demo! I still have to rate the airpower demos I got to see when I was stationed on the USS Kittyhawk as the best I've ever seen and will ever see. Our Tomcat squadron VF-154 Blacknights was able to get a little crazier than what you get to see at an airshow. Then again being in the middle of the ocean with no one to complain about shattered windows..
One particular demo had them go as a 2 ship we didn't really know what was going on but would quickly learn. Crammed into vultures row we were about as high up as you could get. The announcer draws our attention to the show cat rabidly approaching us broadside. We all have every bit of our attention focused on him, including following him through his snap turn away from the ship.... before the world as we know it seemed to blur out with a thunderous roar only to be the wingman everyone forgot about zips over our heads seemingly to barley miss the mast and really blurring the lines between subsonic and supersonic.
The announcer then gets us ready to watch a real sidewinder launch. The wingman streaks by pumping out a bunch of flares and then makes sure his heat signature is not going to be anywhere nearby. Once lead has a tone we hear " Fox 2 Mike!" Transmitted over the 1MC. And I get to add yet another instance in my life where hollywood completely ruins the real thing. An actual sidewinder launch and impact with a flare isn't really a lot to be seen honestly no one would have known it happened had they not transmitted the brevity.

It's most likely a plane out of San Jose International Airport. Both airports are rather close. Due to the way the camera shot was taken, it appeared to be close to the F-14 but when in fact far about from one another.

I love the look of the Classic TF-30 Engine Nozzles, Nevermind the power they lacked.
But were the GE-F110’s Louder ?

Saw demo in 92-93 at Salena's city airport all I remember was the engines were super loud could hear car alarms honking and beeping sirens going for miles around the airport as they departed the area to come back around for 600 knot fly by where you could see the vapor over the wings it was so cool my ears were ringing. The airshow must have not been advertised much because hardly anyone there it was a Friday show the two F-14's were just brought in from carrier what the crew said I spoke to them for about 30 minutes. I asked if they were going up they said they were soon I asked can you go mach 1 they told me they couldn't but they could do pass just below that. My ears were ringing for an hour.

They were definitely louder , just a deeper roar I guess. They started refitting to the A/B around 87' . But still, the TF30 was a beast at low alt.

At 3:56, way more than 6.5g through the minimum radius turn. It is more like 8 - 8.5g peak through the MRT. NATOPs guidelines were max 6.5g, but the pilots exceeded it all the time.

    • @tomcatter2027
      @tomcatter2027 Год назад

The 6,5 g wasn't a limit, it was a restriction to give longer life to the airframes.

@2ZZGE100 some people just wana say what they think they know and disregard the remaining facts in front of them lol . I've heard Captain Dale"Snort" Snodgrass mention that when the engineers would come over his father's house he would pay close attention to what they would talk about with the F-14 and the one thing he clearly remembered was them saying that the F-14 was capable of13gs and lol that's why snort would bring back tomcats with panels and screws missing... WHAT A LEGEND! RIP "Snort" a true American Hero 🇺🇸

Yes that is correct. Tomcat had an extremely tight turning radius. The whole diameter of the 360 was around 1200 feet.
