The title is a bit misleading. The cash value of 180,000 points is $1,800, so you really spent $2,100 on this flight. Perhaps that’s a great deal for business class, but for most people it probably makes more sense to book economy/economy plus and save points for future travel. In any event, great video!
no you spend $300 on this first class flight because $300 is what going to show up on your card and at the end of the month, you only have to pay $300 to clear this amount so yes, $10,000 flight worth $300 =)) The point you already have in your card, you just transfer them to Virgin atlantic and pay $300 with your credit card, not pay $2,100 lol~ The redemtion for this flight is $10,000/180,000 points = $0.05 per point.
Airplane food isn't actually bland. The human ability to taste is just reduced high up in the air. (don't ask me why) So if the meal preparing companies just use normal amounts of spices and salt the food very likely will taste bland. But you obviously can't add an enormous amount of salt as well (because of the physical side effects of too much salt). So it's actually quite difficult to create a well balanced airplane meal.
I just flew Virgin from LHR to JFK yesterday in Upper Class. We did the upgrade at the airport. But you can actually get better point redemtion if you booked directly on Virgin instead of Delta! But great video! We had the same plane seat layout with side ways monitors and window behind the seat. Hopefully we can try the new layout soon!
Yes thank you! Really liked the video and review but I wouldn’t call this a good deal at all. You can use Amex or chase transfer bonus to virgin and book with them instead of delta. Delta miles are called skypesos for a reason. They can be great for domestic redemptions but are mostly not competitive for international biz or first with a few exceptions based on routings
@@ShelbyChurch hi Shelby how are you doing and can I have lunch with your beautiful twin sister Monica church on Tuesday at bai tong in Issaquah highlands before I go to work at regal cinemas movie theater
Trips like these are why I'm so passionate about the credit card game, and that's mainly all I talk about on my channel. You hit the nail on the head by saying that the only way that you can profit from the credit card game (or travel for basically free) is by paying off your cards on time and in full every single month. If you use a credit card like a debit card, you can book trips like this yourself. Also, just to clarify, more accounts on your credit report is a positive for your credit score, as you mentioned (that applies to everyone). Lenders like to see you utilizing credit from multiple sources in a responsible way, so that's why you never want to close credit cards if they have a no-annual fee downgrade option (ESPECIALLY with your oldest credit cards). It can be a complex game, but it's also super profitable if you learn how to do it correctly, so I'm glad you touched on it here! Great video Shelby!
flying to europe in sep on points doing this exact thing. Already got two new credit cards to get points for our trip next summer for the olympics. wont have any issue on charging to get the spend because I am remodeling my house. Already bought my fridge on one of the cards and started buying tile etc for the other one. Have flown to europe and back many times all on points doing this same hack. 😊
This isn't really first class. Not sure if you chose that tittle to draw more viewers in but this is business class. And quite honestly, a very strange looking business class layout. Doesn't seem that comfy and not a lot of privacy. Business class is supposed to be like a small private pod for the passenger but this was very wide open.
I flew Virgin Atlantic at least 4x a month for 6 years so I knew it well. Very accurate review. The lounge is outstanding but the food and seats in upper class suck.
Interesting you use the terms first class and business class interchangeably. In my part of the world, business class is not the same as first class, is this an American thing?
When you started talking about the food it brought me back an old podcast episode from Radiolab where they talk about human experiences while being on an airplane. Like what happens to our bodies and how are sense change when we fly. One of things I remember is making food to eat while flying is tricky.
Virgin Atlantic is my favourite transatlantic airline. Their customer service is great, the staff super friendly, and prices are very reasonable ✈️ I normally pay around 300 - 400 in economy (not using points), which is still a great price. I don't really care about business class as I always fall asleep before we take off and wake up just before landing so I probably won't remember much from flying business anyway, lol
So if you get Cashback credit cards instead of points, maybe you get less, but you are actually spending like $1k+ Cashback potential on a first card flight. Points aren't "free", it's a credit card choice vs pure cashback
You spent 180k virgin points on a single flight? I'm not trying to be a downer but comon now. That is 3 delta one flights worth, 2 ana suites worth, ect
Hey Shelby, I love your videos (esp the vlog ones!!) and wanted to offer a constructive feedback (hope it comes across that way). While I definitely think the video topic is interesting (how you booked a first class flight to Europe for $300), I do think the video length seems a bit much. With social media nowadays, it seems like the "hack" could be explained in half the time or less. I know you like to add in b-roll and stuff and I want to support your channel but it feels a bit dreading to have to click on a 13 min video to find out a flight booking hack. Just a thought
I also plan to use my accumulated points, some also transferred from bank points, to fly from Taipei to San Francisco with EVA air next month. It'll cost me 150,000 points with my EVA air points in its first class. But you have to spend a lot of money to buy something you like with your credit card, it'll take a long while to achieve that many points, maybe years. What were those did you buy earlier? Especially those expensive items? And when you're done with this flight, you'll need to spend money on many items you like and accumulate those points for a long while again.
I took this flight from Seattle to London and really liked the arrivals lounge in London. You can take a shower and have some breakfast when you land. It’s a nice way to transition to the new time zone. And usually you can’t check into your hotel right away so the arrivals lounge is a great way to refresh after a long flight.
Regarding restaurants, pretty soon it will be robot chef and server so they are just always open, sanitary and inexpensive. Regarding flying, sure you can fiddle with credit card schemes and shuffle purchases for 6 months or simply realize that it's very insane to pay 4000$ for a chair you will only use twice. Sure if you just have plenty of money 4k is no big deal for a transatlantic but a normal ticket is like 500-1000$. What they could do is a staggered bunk style lay flat arrangement so you have pairs of two seats, one higher than the other so they lay flat over each other. You don't really need the mini apartment pod, just lay flat and privacy would be the main value and people aren't that wide. Especially the foot section can be very narrow. You could also remove the windows completely and have virtual windows on a display. That way you can look in all directions, even zoom onto the ground or space. The plane AI could alert you to any UFOs passing which would be a nice bonus. Airplane windows aren't that great on the best of days anyway.
Great video as always @shelbychurch but how did you pay only $300? I booked with Virgin LAX-LHR for NYE 2023 and they charged me $800+ plus 75,000 Virgin points for Upper Class each way.
Its 2 minutes late. Weird. Actually 3 minutes. Great video ! Im going to use that info. I Want to Go to Australia & Nz in about 6-12 months to check it out , scuba etc. Going Fc would be Very nice. Looks like it was a great flight! I'm flying Air NZ business class soon and they seem to have the same configuration for seating. It does look a lot less private, and even a little awkward.... I'm interested to see what it's like!
Flown them several times and they're quite comfy seats. If you want privacy, I recommend picking a seat by a bulkhead, because then you will have nobody either in-front or behind you. In the worst case, Air NZ service is nice and the crew are super friendly 😊
Have you ever edit someone else's footage? I've done both. I rather do someone else's because I'm less critical of my work. I think cutting a movie trailer is the funniest. If you haven't cut a trailer before, you try it sometime. It's fun, taking a 2 hour movie and telling the story in 2 minutes to convince the audience to watch that movie. I use to be a trailer editor. I was criticized on my style that a trailer can't be cut that way and now they're using my style. LOL!!
Shelby, a lot of people get credit cards and pay them off every month... And then something awful happens and they're happy that at least they have groceries and utilities and rent and gas for their cars and other needs paid. In my case, I had to quit two jobs for ethical reasons (was making what would have been up to $120,000 that year) and took a much lower paying job as a flight attendant. Now, I get free business class flights - $0 to Israel and $46 in taxes on the way home (so $46 total dollars spent on airfare - TOTAL)... But the bridge from quitting the jobs for ethical reasons (after tirelessly and very vocally advocating for change and reporting to different agencies and then finally just quitting with very strongly worded letters) was... my credit card. Unless something amazing and unexpected happens, I won't be able to pay off what I had to put on it in just a month. I just don't have that earning potential at this time. I feel like I heard all of these things my whole life about being a good person, but it might be that we do finish last. :(

It seems you always order chicken and are not satisfied. Do these upper class cabins offer beef, lamb, veal, pork, duck, fish, shellfish, or serious Italian such as lasagna or bolognese?
The virgin Upper Class on the A330 NEO is much nicer than this seat on the 787 and is similar to delta one on the a330 Neo and a little bit with the a350 but not as wide
(deep breath in) Virgin Atlantic dont have, or never had a First Class product. Upper Class is Business and not even a particularly great one. While the Upper Wing and Clubhouse are industry leaders, sadly all the touches of luxury dry up as soon as you actually get into the plane. There was a time UC was an innovative product but now (thanks to 10 years of Delta's cost cutting) it's fallen well behind competition. However, you would find a more friendly crew and ground staff!
Would you try another First Class flight to Europe again or would you take an Economy Class try out ?The Question is would you ? I love people they are honest. The Question why i´m asking is how big is your readiness something to do what you never to do before.
Getting a credit card with a massive signup bonus is a perk of having a good credit score. There's not much point in having an excellent credit score if you don't use it.

Having flown Virgin 1st Class out of LHR, I can say it was one of the best experiences flying of my life. It was amazing. The separate 1st class "terminal" was awesome. Amazing, actually. I am bummed that I missed the pool table and roof top part! Dang! Next time, I guess. :)

we booked 2 economy tickets through Virgin Atlantic when capital one was doing the 30% transfer bonus! 2 tickets for 85k points + $106 from sea to hnd (Japan), flying delta plane though since they are partners!

Another wonderful video Shelby!
How ‘bout a comparison video after 3 airlines??? 🤷🏼♂️ whatever, I’ll watch 🙄
Ps- do the podcast 🎉 Do it yourself. Like SOLO. Like a regular “collection of thoughts” what you learned, what you found… Your Journal. VENT. I’d listen 👍
& I’d rather have that than a guest show. Like your own weekly penguinz0 but your version/medium.
& OMG regular Lauren episodes HA!
I’d seriously rather just hear you talk (I know it’ll be worth my time lol).
I need girlfriend
Your wrong on every level you don’t understand finance
It's not first class; it's business. A bit of an influencer noob vid, TBH.
VA don’t have first class! They market their business class product (shown in this video) as ‘Upper Class’. It’s business class.
Wow, this is so relatable! (Not)
Talking about spoilt. Wow best $300 you spent I bet. Best food you have eaten in a long time. Now where's my chicken or fish option. My back's sore from sitting up the whole flight. Oh, economy is not fun. Back in the cattle section. 🦘🦘😭😭 Is there a spare seat in first class, Shelby? 🤣🤣 Hey, wake up you two. Let me out I need to go to the toilet.😭😭😭😭
we booked 2 economy tickets through Virgin Atlantic when capital one was doing the 30% transfer bonus! 2 tickets for 85k points + $106 from sea to hnd (Japan), flying delta plane though since they are partners!
