Just watched this masterpiece again. Fell in love with Jean Arthur the first time I saw her years ago and now I'm older I can appreciate her and the other actors on a whole new set of levels. But I'm still in love with her. Which actress ever can cry so adorably and make us feel her pain so beautifully. This was George Stevens' final film of a three-picture deal with Columbia Pictures. The studio was just starting to become a great studio, mostly due to the work of Frank Capra. Studio chief Harry Cohn had just lost Capra to free agency and wanted desperately to find a new star director. Cohn was a notoriously ill-mannered boss who just happened to be a great producer. So, when he approached Stevens with a deal , Stevens agreed, except that Cohn had to agree not to visit the set at any time. Stevens delivered three classics to Cohn: "Penny Serenade," "The Talk of the Town and "The More the Merrier" before heading to the Army to shoot the war.

Jean Arthur was one of the best looking ladies in the Golden Era of Hollywood yet nobody puts her in the top 10 beautiful ladies. A natural beauty. Even in "Shane' she was beautiful in her 50's. Such a good actress. Low key but dynamic. I love these old B&W movies from the late '30's to the mid '50's.
OK, just watched it for the 30th time. It's like comfort food or a warm blanket. Safe, escape, brief respite....you know. Of course when it was made it seemed like the world was ending - things were such a mess in europe and asia. funny
This reminds me a lot of another film called "Walk, Don't Run", which had Cary Grant in the Charles Coburn role, Samantha Eggar in the Jean Arthur role and Jim Hutton in the Joel McCrea role. Very similar premise. Love both films.
We can never truly get the full flavor of this comedy as did those in the middle of the housing shortages and all the myriad wartime insanities which the film so expertly presents. It is still a funny, charming, sexy and delightful anyway.

Now that made my heart happy. ❤️❤️😊😊
Mine, too. 😊
Absolutely love this movie! I must watch this at least once a year ❤️
What a bonus! AVAIL to view on RUclips FREE! Luv this film.
I learned that many programs get a thumbs down by others who have their own channel, they want to move up and they try to put others down. Greed and jealousy I guess, hard to understand. But it explains why there's 53 thumbs down. This picture is a gem.
First time I have taken the time to see it. Thank you for sharing it with us all. Usually I watch Joel McCrea in Westerns, and didnt think I'd like the movie. But thoroughly enjoy the whole thing. 😀
A WONDERFUL MOVIE... and Jean Arthur 🥰😍😘
This is a wonderful movie! Thanks!!
Charles Coburn should have gotten a best supporting actor for his role in this movie!
He did, he won that exact Academy Award!
He DID JUST THAT!!!
OK, just watched it for the 30th time. It's like comfort food or a warm blanket. Safe, escape, brief respite....you know. Of course when it was made it seemed like the world was ending - things were such a mess in europe and asia. funny
Exactly CS, me too. Glad I’m not the only one. Thanks! I also found Louisa, that I watch often.
The tall FBI agent, Bruce Bennett, lived to be 100 years of age.
This reminds me a lot of another film called "Walk, Don't Run", which had Cary Grant in the Charles Coburn role, Samantha Eggar in the Jean Arthur role and Jim Hutton in the Joel McCrea role. Very similar premise. Love both films.
Is a version of this.
I saw this movie a few years ago. I really enjoyed it thanks for posting
I love this movie. This movie is 80 years old!
One of the best and I've watched this several times.I love this movie!
The schedule part was amazing. 😂
NO WONDER, this was an Academy Award winner!
GREAT MOVIE! 😀
Only nominated, not awarded.
I would rather sleep in a tent than to stay and follow that morning schedule ⛺😂. Great movie 👍👍
We can never truly get the full flavor of this comedy as did those in the middle of the housing shortages and all the myriad wartime insanities which the film so expertly presents. It is still a funny, charming, sexy and delightful anyway.
