    Working on the same jukebox now. Your videos are really helping. Everything works on mine except the pick up arm, it is so gummed up so I'm anxious to get new grease ordered. I found some synthetic oil on ebay I'm going to try. i have about 1000 45's from when I DJ back in the 80's so it will be fun to listen to them all again.

    The caps on the tweeters act as a basic high pass filter to block the bass from hitting the tweeters so much.
    They seem to often dry out as they are usually electrolytics.
    Good find there.

    Your videos have been very helpful as I learn to repair this jukebox! Thanks for doing them. Is there a capkit for these and if yes where can I get one? I actually have a 488 but the amp looks the same. Thanks again.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  8 месяцев назад +1

      There's not a go to place that I'm aware of that has a ready made cap kit but there may be one somewhere. There's a company called Victory Glass that is the largest jukebox parts company, but the models from this era not many people make any parts or anything for. You could take the schematics of the amp, or open it up and write down the values of the caps and order them individually if you had to.

    great video! i have a rockola 477 with a similar amp and the "SPEAKER OVERLOAD" light is on and it makes a machine gun like sound when i turn it on. any idea what it could be? I replaced the original amp with a working one and it worked for 2 weeks and then the sound came back! I'm out of ideas. thanks

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  5 лет назад +3

      These old machines have capacitors in them and over time the capacitors wear out. So the capacitance of them changes, which means all the voltages are different than they're supposed to be, some are higher, some are lower. To fix it, you take the capacitors out one at a time and replace them with a brand new one. Yours probably had bad capacitors in the power supply that are sending too much voltage to the amp, and then the amp is getting damaged by the over voltage slowly, so after about two weeks it wore out whatever it had worn out on the first amplifier. If you go replace all the electrolytic capacitors it will probably fix it.

      We have a similar 477 with a similar kind of problem. Sometimes the machine starts so squeal VERY loudly like an air horn when turned on but it doesn't trip the speaker overload thingy. Sometimes it works fine but during a song the overload trips and it goes mute. Probably craps out the same way but the overload catches it and the squeal doesn't go to the speakers. Haven't had time to mess with it, but my guess would be a bad cap somewhere or the output transistors in the amp.

    I've gone through every comment and reply, but don't see where anyone has asked where you get your capacitors. I left a comment on one of you other videos about a Rockola 2 I'm picking up this weekend (thanks again for the reply!) and imagine I will have to replace them in the near future. Although, it was serviced within the last few years so they may have already been replaced. Anyway, where do you recommend purchasing the capacitors? Thanks!

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  3 года назад +2

      The way I usually do it is I make a list of the ones I need, then buy them from www.Newark.com . I'm usually going to buy 100 at a time though so I have extras long term for other stuff I work on, and that's the cheapest way.
      You can buy ready made kits from www.JukeBoxFridayNight.com , that's Bill Bicker's site he's the resident expert on rebuilding amplifiers for jukeboxes.

    • @JaredWilbanks
      @JaredWilbanks 3 года назад +1

      @@LyonsArcade Thank you! I had actually checked out Bill's site, but his cap kits only go up through model 435. Obviously this is all very new to me, so I haven't had a chance to research which parts crossover to different models; maybe one of those kits listed has caps that will work with the 490?
      I will check out newark. Thanks again for your help!

    • @JaredWilbanks
      @JaredWilbanks 3 года назад +1

      @@LyonsArcade Alright, so I went through my amp and wrote down every capacitor needed. Then I went down the capacitor rabbit hole and discovered there are general and audio grade ones. Obviously anything I read on the internet I take with a grain of salt, but what I believe I've found to be true (correct me if I'm wrong) is to use audio for anything the audio signal goes through and general for anything power related. So, for the amp I'm thinking:
      Pre-Amp - Audio caps
      Driver PC Board - Audio caps
      Power Supply - General caps
      Muting and Squelch - Audio??? Or is general OK since the purpose is to mute the sound after a selection is finished playing?
      Thanks!

    Hey there I have a similar unit. Had one burnt out channel and used to squeal time to time. Then the other channel went out. No blown fuses I'm assuming it's something in the amp itself? Any help would be very much appreciated. I'd bring it in but I live in Canada. Thanks.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 года назад +2

      If you open up that amp (just take it out of the box) inside it you will find two little boards that disconnect, one is for each channel, you probably had those preamps stop working, you may have a fuse or two bad INSIDE the amp. So to fix it you'd need to replace the electrolytic capacitors inside of it, if you have any blown fuses inside it's likely the transistors mounted to the big heat sink....

    And how dose the arm grab the record.
    Dose it have little nubs at both ends to grab the record and when it lays it on the turntable.
    The nubs relax until the record ends then the arm nubs grabs the record.
    Sends it back to the carousel?
    It's a deep dive I'm probably sure it's not going to happen on the video..
    But I'm so fascinated.
    I really like deep technical stuff.
    But this video otherwise.

    • @LyonsArcade

      On the next video we take the whole thing apart and show how it works, there's a little v shaped piston on one side and a v shaped armature on the other side, when it grabs it the piston moves in and pushes the record from one side into the groove on the other side of the arm. Very clever design!
