- Join me on "Voltes with Elias" this week as I explore the vibrant inner west Melbourne suburb of Footscray, with a special focus on it's rich Greek culture and diaspora!
In this video, we walk through Melbourne 's Footscray with Dean Kotsianis the co-founder of "Yitonia", a newly founded Greek community hub that embodies the spirit of connection and tradition. Discover what makes Yitonia a unique project for Melbourne's Greek community and beyond. We even check out some local Melbourne street art in Footscray!
Our journey doesn’t stop there! We also visit the home of Manoli where we see his love of Crete and his garden while treating us to a taste of his homemade Tsikoudia (τσικουδιά / ρακή), a traditional Greek spirit. This authentic experience offers a glimpse into the heart of Greek traditions, right here in Footscray.

Good video, 🙂
Footscray is in the western part of Melbourne as the western suburbs are considered to be the poorest suburbs. There was a Greek migration to Footscray in the 1960s, particularly to the suburb of Yarraville. Footscray is known for its multicultural communities, especially with the Vietnamese and Sudan people today. I attended Victoria University on Ballarat Road, commencing in 1986, and got to experience Footscray. Unfortunately, back then, Barkley Street was well known for its drugs and crime. Thanks for the upload.
Κρήτη λεβεντογέννα! Συγχαρητήρια Ηλία! Ωραία μαντινάδα!
Nothing brings together a couple of greek lads like a nice home brew drink! Hes got an awesome garden too!
Was great fun.
Melvourni! Can’t wait to come visit
You'll love it.
Mr Manolis - PHD in Creteology
Neighbouring Yarraville village is more Greek than Footscray.
Good to know. Will check it next time I'm in Melbourne
